Mary DeMuth is the author of several southern novels, including A Slow Burn, Life in Defiance, and the Christy award finalists, Watching the Tree Limbs and Daisy Chain.  She’s also written four parenting books and a memoir, Thin Places. She’s passionate about the written word, teaching, and mentoring writers. Mary lives in Texas with her husband, Patrick, and their three children.

Do you have a wall around your heart?

This is my first book review on Amazon and it is more of a testimony of why I purchased the book and why I am glad I did. I have not suffered the kind of crushing hurts that the author describes and I was not sure if I had a wall around my heart. I have several weird characteristics but I guess I thought they were part of my DNA makeup. These included getting my feelings hurt easily, avoiding conflict, not being able to express clearly what I am thinking, etc. I also knew and believed in inner healing and healing of memories but I never knew how to enter into that spiritual dimension. When I heard that Mary was writing about praying using concepts that Jesus taught [in the the Lord's Prayer], I decided I needed to read that book. I have read the book, I love it, I have discovered several specific areas that I need to focus on in my conversations with God and several of the bricks have been wiped out. Praise God.

One last thought: the fact that you are reading this review means that you are a book person and probably a life-long learner. If you, like me, have a stack of books that you have not read yet, then I recommend that you go ahead and buy this book even if you do not feel like you have a wall around your heart. When you get it, at least flip through the chapters before you put it on your to-read stack or shelf. God has a wonderful way of bringing a particular book to mind when something happens and we need Him to speak to us. Sometimes its the whole book and other times it just a particular chapter. I recently read a book that I bought in the mid-1970's. May the Lord bless you and your loved ones.

Life Changing

This book has been life changing for me. The way Mary uses the Lord's prayer as a road map for us to forgive others and ourselves allows for the walls around our hearts to literally fall. She is real and raw and the book leads you back to community. After reading it your intimacy with the Lord is increased. It can't get any better than that. You will never say the Lord's prayer the same again. I highly recommend this book.

Seeing Old Hurts in New Ways

I had the honor of serving on the launch team for this book and as a member I received an advanced copy of The Wall Around Your Heart. Already a big fan of Mary DeMuth's blog, I expected the book would be good, and it exceeded my expectations.

This roadmap for relational healing, based on The Lord's Prayer, helped me confront some old hurts.

What Mary DeMuth does that is different than a lot of Christian authors is that she points out the love that God has even for people who have hurt us. She notes, "we cannot love our enemies until we see the twin truths: God loves me. God loves them."

This approach helped me see my old hurts in new ways. It gave me more compassion and grace for those who have hurt me.

I strongly recommend The Wall Around Your Heart for anyone looking for God's hope and healing from relational pain. It is well-written, it deepens how we think of The Lord's Prayer, and it is full of grace.

What Haddon Robinson did for preachers, Ken Davis has done for professional speakers. Haddon Robinson wrote the definitive text on preaching--Biblical Preaching: The development and delivery of expository messages. Ken Davis has done the same for those who speak for a living in his book, Secrets of Dynamic Communication: Prepare with focus, deliver with clarity, speak with power.

Davis divides his book into three sections. Part one deals with preparation, part two with delivery, and part three with application.

At the heart of his approach is the belief that focus makes for a better presentation. To help accomplish that goal, Davis introduces an acronym, SCORRE, in part one to explain his approach. It stands for:
Subject--A speech should focus on a single subject that can be expressed in one or two words.
Central Theme--Narrow the content of the talk to a manageable amount of specific information.
Objective--The objective sentence explains the purpose and structure of your talk.
Rationale--The main points of the speech establishes a logical foundation upon which the credibility of the speech rests.
Resources--Illustrations, data, anecdotes, and humor bring the talk to life.
Evaluation--Assess the effectiveness of your presentation from preparation through delivery.

In part two, the author explains ways to keep the audience involved and engaged. He includes how to use gestures effectively, make eye contact, improve vocal quality, and use facial expressions to effectively communicate. He also includes a chapter on maximizing the environment where he discusses the importance of lighting, and how to use a microphone.

In part three, he includes a helpful chapter on where to find humor and how to use it effectively.

The only drawback is that the book is relatively short (only 150 pages). As a result, the author only covers the basics of how to put together an effective talk. The book appears to serve as a teaser for the seminar the author teaches.

As a speech teacher at a high school, I am always looking for good resources to use to improve both my own presentation and that of my students. I enjoy Ken Davis as gifted speaker he is, and when I saw that he had a book on the subject of public speaking, I figured it was worth a look. I was impressed with what I got. In Secrets of Dynamic Communication, Ken Davis presents a method for public speaking from which both the amateur and the professional speaker can benefit. Even if the potential reader is not a fan of public speaking, if he or she would happen to know who Ken Davis is, this book is worth a read just for the latter point.
Ken’s book addresses some of the most critical aspects of public speaking: organization, body language, timing, and the use of humor to name a few. The method with which he discusses these topics includes illustrations, examples, and even opportunities to put into practice the very things about which he is writing. Many of these illustrations include Davis’s trademark wit and zingers; despite the fact that this is more or less an instructional book, his personality shines through and makes this an engaging read. The SCOPPE method alone is worth buying the book.
Secrets of Dynamic Communication is a book that I am going to hang on to as long as I am teaching. The material contained within is simple enough for high school students to understand, but detailed and expert enough that professional speakers and pastors would find useful pieces out of it as well. If public speaking is something that the reader does even on occasion, it should be a no-brainer decision to buy this book.

As I type this, I'm sitting inmy houseboat, looking out the window to a gray day on Lake Union in Seattle.The rain is falling in great sheets. It pounds on the roof, and the windsplatters it against the windows. These are my favorite days on the lake. I cansee ducks swim and boats motor by, as well as the occasional kayaker bravingthe rain. It's cozy, and I'm content.

When I set out to write this novel, I began with a setting,and nothing else: a houseboat on the banks of Lake Union. As a lifelongSeattle-area resident, I've always been fascinated by floating homes (and ofcourse, a little movie called Sleepless in Seattle onlyfurthered that fascination). Years ago, as a young journalist, I wrote anarticle about the houseboat lifestyle, and I'll never forget being invited totour a floating home for the first time. The woman who graciously welcomed meinto her home (through a door with an opening in the bottom for ducks) told meabout life on the lake--the way a houseboat sways gently in the wind, how thelake can rock you to sleep, and perhaps most memorable, for me, the way thehouseboat community is like a family, helping neighbors in need, keepingsecrets like only trusted friends do.

I suppose the very beginning of this novel started that day,when I stepped inside that little floating home. And as time went on, I longedto live in a houseboat of my own. But as our family grew, my husband and Idecided that raising three little boys on a tiny floating home may not be the best choice(imagine playing catch on a small dock). So we set that dream aside, at leastuntil September 2012.

My husband knew I'd begun plotting out an idea for a novelset on a houseboat, and while I'd hoped to find one to rent for a weekend forresearch purposes, he surprised me with a generous idea. Why not, he suggested,rent a houseboat for an extended period of time? I could use it as my office,and really get the feel for life on the lake.

My first instinct was to say no. At first blush, it seemedfrivolous, an unnecessary splurge. But then I began to think: How else would Ireally get to know the houseboat lifestyle, the history of the community, thelocal personalities and their secrets?

So we went to tour a houseboat for rent, and in the space of3.5 seconds, I fell head over heels. With a loft bedroom (complete with aworking porthole), a rooftop deck with a view of the Space Needle, and a quaintand fully stocked kitchen, this was the houseboat of my dreams. My husband andI quickly signed a lease to rent it for four months.

I could not have written this book without the time I'vehad on Lake Union. While it's true this is a work of fiction, the months I'vespent in the houseboat community have enriched and inspired my writing--from thepair of mallards nesting outside my back deck to the kindness of the neighborsall around me.

We have a few more weeks on our little floating home beforeour lease runs out. I really hate to go. I've laughed here. I've cried here.I've made new friends and bonded with old ones under this roof. I've felt agreat sense of peace here. And mostly, I have fallen in love with the houseboatcommunity.

But it's almost time to say good-bye. For when I turn inthe final draft of this novel in the days ahead, I will also be turning in mykey and saying good-bye to my beloved Boat Street, as I've affectionatelycalled it in real life and in the novel. Even so, the dock, and the story Icreated here, will forever remain in my heart. Houseboat No. 7. Henrietta andHaines. Little Jimmy. Penny and Collin. Alex and Ada. I feel as if they're allwaving good-bye as I make my way up the dock. Years will pass, but I'll alwaysknow where to find them.

Same old story over again

I've read all of Sarah Jio's books. I love her first 3 but this one sort of disappointed. They are all pretty much the same. She's beginning to remind me of Nicholas Sparks in that all her novels are basically the same book with different characters in different cities. I was so excited to find her novels in the beginning, but unfortunately I'm moving on...

Intruiging Past/Present Storyline with an Interesting Houseboat Setting

I do love past-present storylines, and Sarah Jio is a master at weaving two eras together with lots of clever coincidences that link them. Although it does seem to be a bit formulaic, I enjoy the twists that are thrown into the mix. The houseboat setting for this one was totally kickin', by the way. I've been interested in houseboats since I knew MacGyver had one, all those years ago. ;) Really enjoyed this read and couldn't put it down. Cozy, mysterious, and romantic.

Not what I expected

I bought this book solely based on Sarah's previous book, which I loved, and the brief blurb provided by Amazon. I wanted to read about travel, fitting into a new environment with foreign customs, new horizons etc etc, but I got a huge amount of unwanted detail about fertility treatment and babies instead, which I really didn't want to read about .
Sorry, I'm really happy for Sarah and Frederic, but this was not the book I thought I was buying.

This was nowhere near as interesting as her first book. The editing was poor and I found her writing clunky in places. Her thoughts about Tahiti were at times interesting and the descriptions of some of the other atolls she visited were evocative. This is a pleasant enough holiday read but lacked the substance of the earlier book.

More about fertility treatments and a baby than Tahiti and the South Pacific

This is hardly a travel memoir, but more of an exploration into the life of a woman who undergoes fertility treatments, has a baby, and oohs and aahs at her creation. I bought this book to get insight into life in the South Pacific, not the merits of a vaginal birth vs. a C section, and could care less what type of expensive stroller she buys.

While the book starts off with vivid descriptions of Tahiti, it quickly loses it's appeal as the author admits to wanting children. I could hardly get through the end, perhaps because I couldn't relate to the author whatsoever.

Women Living Well is a well deserved treat!

The book opens up with Courtney's visit to the Rachel Ray show where her interview is sliced apart to edit out the faith aspect and I have to say it seemed like Rachel Ray was degrading Courtney on her choice to be a homemaker as a profession. But as a stay at home mom I feel like that sometimes. I feel like society does not value the women who stay at home and our work is our family. Courtney addresses all of that. She strengthens the desire to stay at home and raise my children to love God and to believe in Jesus.

And oh the section on marriage hit home big time. Because I get so irritated at my husband and I am guilty of derogatory comments to and about him. And I admit that I am wrong in that. There is a 10 day marriage challenge in this section that is worth the price of the book for it alone.

Courtney speaks in a way that will encourage you while showing you through scripture what the role of a biblical wife and mother should be. This book will inspire you to keep going through the days where you question why.

Good guideline

I'm in transition from a working mom to a stay at home mom so this was a great book for me! I can see where it would be challenging for a working mom to apply the suggestions in this book because of the commitment and time a job requires. As I transition to being at home for my family I was having a hard time picking and choosing what to do each day instead of working (there was so much!). This book was a good resource to help me prioritize what was most important and helped me focus in on what my family needed from me. It also helped me understand that serving my family can be fulfilling and serving is an honor not a chore which is something I struggled with previously. Although I don't intend to apply everything in this book exactly as it is laid out it has been a good guideline to organize my life. Biggest take away I had was how important family meals are and rearranging our lives around being together (without electronic distraction) this has been a positive game-changer in our family dynamic. I would recommend this book to stay at home moms and working moms although working moms will have to take it with a grain of salt and pick and choose what to take from the book.

When I began reading this book I had trouble staying focused; not my season to read it I guess. Because it touched on husbands, kids & our home, I would have loved reading this during my younger years; so many things I would have tried changing... My desire is to be like Jesus & that is my daily goal. This is a very good book & recommended to all women no matter their age. Thank you Courtney!
