About the Author

Katarina T. Borer, PhD, is a professor in the School of Kinesiology at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where she has spent over 35 years teaching and researching the hormonal control of metabolism, particularily in response to exercise. She has spent 40 years researching endocrine mechanisms operating in acceleration of growth by exercise and regulation of energy balance. Borer also developed and validated radioimmunoassay for hamster growth hormone and prolactin.

She is a member of the American College of Sports Medicine, Endocrine Society, American Diabetes Association, American Physiological Society, and Society for the Study of Ingestive Behavior. In 1991, Borer received a Fulbright scholarship to the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, where she studied the expression of IGF-I mRNA in exercising hamsters. She has been a visiting professor on the kinesiology faculty at the University of Zagreb in Croatia since 2002. Borer was also awarded the title of Meritorious Professor in 2010 from the University of Zagreb.

Borer and her husband, Paul Wenger, reside in Ann Arbor. Borer enjoys spending time with her grandchildren, painting, studying art, listening to opera and classical music, and devoting time to her environmental interests, especially the recycling of resources.

Meticulously detailed

Very good book. it goes into extreme detail; which for those that enjoy delving into the abstruse molecular intricacies behind every change within each individual cell, this is perfect. It also goes into non-hormonal signaling in exercise which is very insightful, and not often mentioned.. such as ROS, bone mechanical loading, calcium's role in signal transduction pathways, etc. It is indeed quite pedantic, but again, for those other endocrine aficionados, you will appreciate it. My only qualm is that there's not MORE material.

About the Author
Steve Bein teaches philosophy at the University of Dayton. When he's not writing or teaching, he's probably on the mat: he holds black belts in two American forms of combative martial arts and has trained in about two-dozen other martial arts over the past twenty-odd years. His short fiction has been published in Asimov's, Interzone, Writers of the Future, and has been anthologized for use in college courses alongside the works of such figures as Orson Scott Card, Larry Niven, Isaac Asimov, and H.G. Wells. His saga of the Fated Blades includes Daughter of the Sword, Year of the Demon, Disciple of the Wind, Only a Shadow, and Streaming Dawn.

A strong sophomore effort

ANALYSIS: After last year's fantastic debut Daughter Of The Sword, Steve Bein was very high in my lists for this year. I got a copy of Year Of The Demon early & was very intrigued to see how it would mark against its superb predecessor.

Like the previous title, the book's blurb doesn't reveal the entirety of the story. Similar to the last book, this book also has multiple POV characters and occurs in various time periods. The first one focuses on Mariko Oshiro and is set in the 22nd year of the Heisei era or 2010 C.E. Mariko has become somewhat famous due to the events of the last book wherein she lost a minor appendage and gained a major reputation as a badass cop. Her reputation comes with a hit on herself & the only way to avoid that is to help the same Yakuza retrieve his iron mask. In the second thread we are reintroduced to Okuma Daigoro in the 21st year of the Azuchi-Momoyama era or 1588 C.E. Daigoro is now the lord of the Okuma clan & commanders a viable area. He is soon to be wed however a dastardly turn of events finds him in opposition with Shichio, the advisor to general Toyotomi Hideyoshi.

Lastly the third and last thread is set in the 148th year of the Muromachi era or 1484 C.E. and the reader is introduced to Kaida. A one-armed child who is also an "ama" or pearl diver. Fate has been cruel to Kaida in the form of her stepsisters and an indifferent father. Things change when a shipwreck occurs near the coast of her village and brings in a group of individuals that might just be her salvation if they don't kill her first. These are the complicated threads that make up the second volume of the Fated Blades series. As with the last book, Mariko gets the lion's share of the sections, in this case five of them. Daigoro gets three and Kaida the last two. The plot once again twists and turns through out the entire book and making the reader wonder what is finally going to happen. With this book, the author brings another part of the fascinating period of Japanese history to the fore and also introduces an iron mask in to the fray.

With this book the primary focus across all the three time periods is the iron mask and it's affinity towards the Inazuma blades particularly Glorious Victory Unsought. This fatal attraction is what propels the story with Mariko and Daigoro as both of them have to fight people with the mask who have been under its influence. The author doesn't quite reveal the how and why about the mask but there are some crucial clues in Kaida's story that dwell upon the mask and the tribe that originates about it. The members of this tribe or the "Wind clan" leave their imprint in almost every time period and it will be up to the reasders to deduce what their agenda is. Another part of the story that was different from its predecessor was the struggles that each character faces. For Daigoro & Mariko, both face immense personal tribulations that would perhaps break many a person however how they strive to overcome these is what makes their threads such a rousing read.

With Kaida, the author explores a grim Cinderella-like storyline that showcases Kaida's fortitude and makes her the most endearing among all the POV characters. Surprisingly in this book, the focus is more on the mask and less on the blades & the blades perhaps will come to the fore in the third book. Wherein the hope is also that the POV characters that survive are sure to return. The author makes sure to keep all the sections intriguing and with the constant switches, keeps the tension spread evenly throughout the story. The sequel story is much darker and also has a graphic sequence present even though the author doesn't believe in torture. The sequence from a story perspective makes sense and doesn't seem gratuitous in the least. As with the last book, this book takes a very cautious approach to the magical front & again while we are shown a magic-lite storyline, it is still very addictive.

The only point that I thought which deducted a bit of awesome from this book is that this book suffers from the classical "middle book" syndrome (assuming that this might be a trilogy). There are quite a few threads that aren't sufficiently resolved and I believe are left for the third book. This caused me some consternation and might do the same for readers who expect a complete resolution to all the plot points.

CONCLUSION: Steve Bein gives out a strong sophomore effort that proves he's not a one-book wonder. Year of The Demon is a darker story that excoriates its characters much more than was thought possible. Year Of The Demon makes sure that readers invested in the Fated Blades series will find a new corner to be intrigued by & is a good follow-up to one of my favorite debuts of all time.

A tight police procedural with a little samurai culture thrown in

Set in modern day Tokyo, this police procedural featuring a female narc, is well written and is fast paced. Two artifacts from ancient Japan who are somehow connected inspire a fanatical cult to shake up the yakuza/law enforcement status quo. For anyone who is a fan of Grass as his pillow and the Nightingale Floor, this book may be of interest. The historical portion of the back story was the most interesting to me, while some of the characters in the present day fell flat. The cult figure was perhaps not developed enough, we'll see if future stories bring his motivations to light.

Love this series.

in this episode Mariko's character is challenged by evidence rules and the need to prevent a major terrorist threat.

As in all of the Fated Blades series, I highly recommend reading them in order. The history of a few surviving Samurai katana blades and their influences on the characters is the basis of these stories. The Japanese male dominated society challenges our heroine constantly. The setting flips between feudal Japan and present day Tokyo keeping you on your toes and how the history intertwines. A good read.

About the Author

Steve Mitchell, PhD, is a professor of physical education teacher education at Kent State University. He received his undergraduate and master's degrees from Loughborough University, England, where the tactical approach was developed. He earned a PhD in teaching and curriculum at Syracuse University. An avid soccer player and licensed coach, he has employed a tactical approach in teaching and coaching at the elementary, middle school, high school, and college levels since 1982.

Mitchell is a member of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD); the Ohio Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (OAHPERD); and the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE).

He resides in Kent, Ohio. In his free time he enjoys soccer, tennis, golf, swimming, kayaking, cycling, and skiing when his aching knees allow.

Judy Oslin, PhD, is professor emeritus at Kent State University. She received her undergraduate and master's degrees from Kent State and earned a PhD in sport pedagogy at Ohio State University. Oslin has more than 35 years of experience as a physical educator and teacher educator. She has used the tactical approach with elementary, middle school, high school, and university students.

Oslin has also presented numerous papers and workshops focusing on implementation of the tactical approach and the Game Performance Assessment Instrument at the international, national, regional, state, and local levels. She continues to work with teachers locally, nationally, and internationally to improve the quality of curriculum and assessment. Oslin is a member of numerous professional organizations, including AAHPERD, National Association for Physical Education in Higher Education (NAPEHE), the American Educational Research Association (AERA), and the National Association for Girls and Women in Sport (NAGWS).

Judy resides in Kent, Ohio, and enjoys traveling and participating in numerous outdoor activities.

Linda Griffin, PhD, is a professor and associate dean for academic affairs in the School of Education at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Black Hills State University, her master’s degree from Ithaca College, and her PhD from Ohio State University. She has more than 35 years of experience as a physical educator and teacher educator. Her research and scholarly interest for over 20 years have focused on the teaching and learning of sport-related games through a games-centered approach grounded in constructivist learning. Throughout the United States and abroad, Linda has presented numerous papers and workshops focused on the tactical approach.

Griffin served on the planning committee for the first Teaching Games for Understanding Conference in New Hampshire in 2001. She is a member of AAHPERD, NASPE, NAGWS, and AERA. Griffin has also served as chair for the Curriculum and Instruction Academy, president of the Research Consortium, and a reviewer for various professional journals, including Journal of Teaching in Physical Education and Research Quarterly.

Linda stays active by biking, walking, kayaking, and practicing yoga. She enjoys the sound of the ocean and listening to books on long walks with her dogs, Finnigan and Devon. She lives in Holyoke, Massachusetts.

Block and Westlake together

Sin Hellcat was originally published in 1961 under the pseudonym Andrew Shaw. Unfortunately, the kindle version has the boring Open Road Media plain black cover rather than the racy softcore cover of the original dime store paperback which featured a nude redhead guzzling a bottle of champagne and included the tag line: "life was one lust-filled orgy for this Sin Hellcat." That's not really what the book's about but it's an eye catching title.

The basic story is that a guy (Harvey Christopher) is trapped in a boring marriage to frigid wife Helen and decides to look up his old college sweetheart (Jodi) who is now working as a prostitute and she gets him involved in international smuggling.

Harvey reminisces about college days with Jodi at the reservoir, in her dorm room, and wherever.

He also reminisces about how he landed his first job in advertising by meeting a guy in a bar and how he schemed and worked his way up.

His story of his frigid honeymoon is absolutely hilarious.

But now he's reconnected with Jodi:
Jodi's large soulful eyes were even deeper now and "her body had filled out very nicely." She has "honey-blonde hair" and is extremely distracting in a green sheath dress.

And Harvey can't get enough of her. Good thing too because he has agreed to travel with her to South America traveling as man and wife to smuggle a valuable item out of the country.

It's a fun story, well-told and worth reading. As Block brags in an afterword, it's impossible to tell who wrote which chapter, Block or Westlake.

They wrote by night

The most enjoyable part of this little book may be Mr. Block's afterword, explaining how it was written:
"I've no idea what our title may have been, but I'm sure it wasn't Sin Hellcat--not that there's anything wrong with it . .[uh-huh] . I blush to admit it, but I'm uncommonly proud of Sin Hellcat... What I like most about it is that it's no mean trick to tell which of us wrote a particular chapter. If I flip the book open and start reading, I can't necessarily tell myself. Somehow, without ever talking at all about the book during its writing, we matched our styles to a remarkable degree. Oh, I could tell you now who wrote which chapters. But then I'd have to kill you."

This is disingenuous. There is some cross-imitation of one young writer's style with the other's, but even in 1963, Westlake wrote like Westlake (the odd-numbered chapters), and Block wrote like Block (the even). And allthough they were trying to put in as much sex as possible (Nightstand books were intended for the night stand), they had to be extremely careful how they described "it."

"I grabbed my Saundra's little breasts--as hard as young rocks, but much more delicious--and led her by them to the bedroom. By the time we passed the threshold, she was giggling and her little tail was wagging just fine. Bohemian ranter or Doughboy doughgirl, both of those were finally incidental. Saundra was, elementally, a sex machine. She had two buttons in front, and both were marked ON."- which is about as hot as it gets in 1963.

Silly name for a fun read

OK, so the title stinks. That was a publisher come on title - you know the type - but this revived volume by two mystery grandmasters is just one terrific hoot! Let yourself go, and just enjoy it!

About the Author

Jacalyn Lea Lund, PhD, is a professor and chair in the department of kinesiology and health at Georgia State University in Atlanta. She taught for 16 years in public schools before entering the doctoral program at Ohio State University to prepare for a second career in teacher education. She received her PhD in 1990. Dr. Lund has presented on assessment at numerous workshops and has taught numerous classes on assessment in physical education.

Dr. Lund has been a member of the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) for more than 40 years. She was on the committee that developed the 1995 NASPE content standards for physical education and has served as NASPE president. In 2009 she received a Service Award from the National Association of Kinesiology and Physical Education in Higher Education and was inducted into the NASPE Hall of Fame in 2013. She loves spending time with her family, dancing, reading, and, as she puts it, “having her dogs take her for a walk.”

Mary Lou Veal, EdD, began her teaching career as an elementary physical education teacher in Dallas, Texas. She taught physical education for 16 years in elementary, middle, and senior high schools and along the way she coached volleyball and track in addition to serving as a curriculum coordinator in Denton, Texas. Since receiving her EdD, she has taught in physical education teacher education programs at the University of Houston, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and at Middle Tennessee State University. 

Dr. Veal’s research has focused primarily on teachers’ assessment perceptions and practices. She is the coauthor of three books and numerous articles and book chapters. Dr. Veal served as president of the North Carolina Alliance for Coaching, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance and was a member of the 1995 NASPE Task Force to develop Teacher Education Standards. In her free time, Dr. Veal enjoys reading historical fiction, gardening, and genealogy. She serves as regent of the Captain William Lytle Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
