Great Book!

The best thing about this book is that all the prayers are based on ancient prayers. Heaven and Earth is the most powerful tool we have, and the prayers in this book will help anyone to do so. Whether you spend time in personal devotions and prayer, work for a church, or just want to learn more about prayer, this book will help you. And you will be blessed by it.
If you have ever been faced with a situation, and did not know what to pray for, or even how to pray about it, this book is for you. I keep it next to my Bible. It is a powerful tool, and you won't regret having it. It will quickly become one of your most prizes possessions. This is the best gift you can give yourself, and your family.
It has strengthened my prayer life and relationship with God. God is awesome and has used Stephanie Dowick to minister in the area of our prayer lives. Teaching how to pray the word of God effectively. This book is the greatest. If you are ever at a loss for words and all you can say is, "Lord, help me!" this book will fill in the gaps and tell you exactly what to pray for any circumstance. You must quote God's word back to Him because His word will not return to Him void. If you can't find particular scriptures or text, this book takes care of it for you and you can find all the scriptures you need for your situation all in one place.

The Gift of Heaven on Earth

Incredibly beautiful prayers. The author's intimacy with the power of prayer is evident, and the amazing prayers she's gathered, written and adapted are like water to my thirsty soul. The book has been divided into chapters such as prayers for daily life, of gratitude, of healing, etc. When I read I'm absolutely taken with the different ways that talks with God, the Universe, Source or whatever you might call the ever-presence in our lives, can be so lovingly, openly and hopefully expressed. I highly recommend this spiritual work of art.

Prayers for Life

Many years ago I heard a talk by a priest who said that in his experience people were generally more comfortable speaking about their sexual experience than their experience of prayer. I suspect that is even more the case today.
“Heaven on Earth” is a both a collection of prayers and an encouragement and guide to personal prayer.
Stephanie Dowrick is an Australian writer who trained and worked as a psychotherapist and now focuses on spirituality and relationships. Her numerous previous books include “Intimacy and Solitude”, “Forgiveness and Other Acts of Love” and “Seeking the Sacred”. They could be seen to belong to the “self-help” category, but are far from superficial and deeply grouped in the author’s personal understanding and appreciation of spiritual traditions, especially those of the west.
Dowrick opens with her perspectives on the importance and benefits of prayer, such as:
“Giving ourselves the gift of reading or remembering a prayer, we are tuning our minds no less effectively than a string musician tunes her instrument before playing it. Whatever the prayer, whatever the words, praying is ultimately an act of hope. It is also an act of connection and of trust. In its quiet, exquisite way, prayer deepens our knowledge of who we are and what life is for.”
She also provides a series of wise and helpful suggestions for how to pray.
The core of the book is an rich anthology of prayers from throughout human history, across various cultures and traditions. The single source most often drawn on for the prayers are the Judaeo-Christian Scriptures. The universal desire and need for prayer is made clear. It also includes prayers by contemporary figures and from literature, as well as a number Dowrick’s own original prayers, such as this example:
“The language of God is silence.
Yet signs can also speak.
a smile here, a word there,
a plant that’s survived drought or frost
someone else’s needs to be answered or met.
The cat that doesn’t judge your pajamas or achievements.
The child who takes your hand.
The friend who’s safe enough to weep or laugh.
Your own willingness to die and rise again.”
The prayers are arranged in sections titled “Prayers in Daily Life”, “... Of Gratitude”, “... In Times of Need or Sorrow”, “... To Light the Way”, “... That Heal”, “... Of Celebration” and “... For Our World”.
Given the number of guides to and anthologies of prayer available already, many produced specifically from a Catholic perspective, why am I recommending “Heaven on Earth” here? As I noted above, prayer is a mysterious and even confronting thing for many people today, even for some church goers. The beauty of this book is that its inclusive perspective on prayer will be welcome and accessible to many readers who may not take up other books on prayer.
I expect to be regularly making use of this book myself, but it would also make for thoughtful gift for someone you would like to reap the benefits of prayer, even if they are not overly religious.
