The Best Mystery Shopper Yet!
By Chloegirl
I truly enjoyed the latest installment of Josie Marcus, mystery shopper. Josie & Ted are happily married & looking for a new home for their new family. While tearing down a rickety gazebo they unearth a dead body. While not much mystery shopping in this book, the relationship between Josie & her daughter, Amelia, is explored. I really liked how the author dealt with the serious issue of bullying that has become so common in our society. This was an excellent book, her best yet. I definitely recommend reading this book.

I do agree that while the murderer is revealed at the end, the actual details of the how are sketchy. However, I don't think that truly interferes with the enjoyment of the story, especially not the removal of a star in the rating.

Love Fixing
By Eecie
I absolutely loved this book. I just read a review that complained it didn't explain how. Perhaps her pages were stuck together? I had no problem understanding how, why or by whom the murder was committed and when it was revealed, the clues made perfect sense to me. Of course, I did NOT figure it out. I amused Viets by sending her my solutions, which were soooo completely wrong. I found the plot, the solutions and the subplots quite satisfying. We have accompanied Josie Marcus through other romances and it is nice to see her settling into her marriage to her hunky vet, Ted, as well as her relationship with her mother growing closer. I'm loving watching Amelia grow up, too. I love this series and Fixing to Die did not disappoint me at all. If you love this series, too, don't miss it. If you have never read Elaine Viets -- what are you waiting for???? Read ALL of them in this series, as well as Helen Hawthorne and her Dead End Jobs series. SIMPLY THE BEST!

With the help of her rescue cat, Eddie, librarian Minnie Hamilton is driving a bookmobile based in the resort town of Chilson, Michigan. But she’d better keep both hands on the wheel, because it’s going to be a bumpy ride…

Minnie and Eddie’s first day visiting readers around the county seems to pass without trouble—until Eddie darts outside at the last stop and leads her to the body of a local man who’s reached his final chapter.

Mobile Librarian Finds Murder
By Kindle Customer
This is a delightful new cozy series featuring Eddie, the tuxedo (black and white) cat. Minnie Anderson, a librarian is unveiling the bookmobile, which she championed, and drives throughout her county in Michigan bringing books to children and elderly who cannot make it to the library. The bookmobile is courtesy of a wealthy elderly man who gave a huge donation to make it possible and of whom Minnie is very fond. Unfortunately, he is murdered on a lonely farm and Minnie finds the body. Together with her new cat, Eddie and her best friend, Kristen, Minnie begins hunting for clues. Of course, her personal safety is threatened and Eddie calls out the cavalry. This is a fun book, light summer reading and I recommend it.

Great cozy!
By Yvonne Reviews
On her way home one day, Minnie Hamilton is followed by a stray cat. She tries to shoo him away, but he’s not having it. He has chosen Minnie as his new human. Minnie isn’t about to argue with a cat. She names him Eddie, but she doesn’t realize what an important role a cat can play in a person’s life.

As Assistant Director of the Chilson Library in Michigan, Minnie is determined to institute a new program. Despite the library’s financial difficulties, she fights to have a bookmobile. A wealthy benefactor is willing to fund it and Minnie’s boss gives in. She excitedly takes it on its first run. Eddie manages to sneak on board, too. He fast makes friends at each stop the bookmobile makes, but Minnie is determined to leave him home next time as she’s afraid her boss won’t like a cat in the new bookmobile.

On their first trip, Eddie races off to a barn and discovers a dead body. Minnie is horrified to learn he had been murdered, but even more so when she realizes she knows the victim – her benefactor. Several people close to Minnie become the prime suspect in the murder. She decides to help the police in their investigation, not that they ask for her help but their investigation is moving way too slowly for her liking. When her own life is in danger, she realizes she may have been better off staying at home.

What a fun mystery! It combines two of my favorite things – cats and books. Eddie doesn’t talk and he doesn’t have any kind of magical powers, but he’s very smart and helps Minnie sort out the murder in his own way. He’s featured throughout the book and was as much a main character as Minnie.

This is the first book in “A Bookmobile Cat Mystery” series and I’m so looking forward to the next one. The characters blended well and gave the reader a good feel for a small town. It’s fast-paced and the mystery kept me guessing until the end of the book.

Likable but Nothing Special
By Karen Kelco
I read a lot of cozy cat mysteries. I was drawn to this one since the bookmobile seemed like a clever way for our heroine to end up in various situations. This is not a series with a crime solving cat. Eddie is for the most part just a cat doing cute cat things. His person Minnie is yet another crime solving librarian but she really didn't have much of a personality. That's pretty much how I felt about the whole thing. It was ok. I also prefer authors not hit you over the head with clues. There was one part where something should have reminded the reader of something Minnie heard earlier, so the author has Minnie replay the scene in her head. I felt like saying, "Yes I got that" but really what is the point of remembering anything if the author will just repeat it for you? So it was readable and ok but there wasn't much to separate Minnie and Eddie from any other librarian and her cat.

Anything That Moves: Renegade Chefs, Fearless Eaters, and the Making of a New American Food Culture, by Dana Goodyear

The popular New Yorker writer combines the style of Mary Roach with the on-the-ground food savvy of Anthony Bourdain.

Dana Goodyear’s narrative debut is a highly entertaining, revelatory look into the raucous, strange, fascinatingly complex world of contemporary American food culture. At once an uproarious behind-the-scenes adventure and a serious attempt to understand the implications of an emergent new cuisine, it introduces a cast of compelling and unexpected characters—from Los Angeles Times critic Jonathan Gold, to a high-end Las Vegas purveyor of rare and exotic ingredients, to the traffickers and promoters of raw milk and other forbidden products, to the hottest chefs who rely on them—all of whom, along with today’s diners, are changing the face of American eating.

Ultimately, Goodyear looks at what we eat, and tells us who we are. As she places all of this within a vivid historical and cultural framework, she shows how these gathering culinary trends may eventually shape the way all Americans dine. What emerges is a picture of America at a moment of transition, designing the future as it reimagines the past.

Amazon.com Review
An Amazon Best Book of the Month, November 2013: In Anything That Moves, Dana Goodyear draws readers into the tentacled extremities of the new culinary vanguard. Bringing her omnivorosity to hundreds of tables, she infiltrates easily a dozen subcultures of the renegades who are procuring, cooking, and devouring their way to a new American cuisine, a “convergence of the disgusting and sublime.” The most inspired characters she introduces are chefs insatiably drawn to experiment with the new: ingredients, methods, and technologies that create never-before-tasted dishes. Goodyear writes with a precise poetry. Her accounts of 12-course (and occasionally 40-course) meals surprise, sometimes to the point of transcendence, occasionally nausea. She’s also unafraid to break her own spell and acknowledge the fog hovering over this hedonistic feast: anxiety over our industrial food chain’s sustainability when the population tops 9 billion, just as we wade into the age of Earth’s sixth major extinction. But even as Goodyear asserts that the bulk of our future protein will have to come from bugs (yes—from bugs), we see her own hunger most clearly when she experiences a meal that evokes vivid memories, “like feasting on my past”: her first hunt with her late father, who dipped a finger in the blood of her kill and marked her forehead. –Mari Malcolm

From Booklist
Without doubt, Americans have become more obsessed with their food than ever before. Thanks to a constant barrage of advertising, cable television networks, an ever-evolving food-distribution system, and a vast agriculture industry, today’s Americans have an immense range of choices for feeding themselves. Goodyear steers readers to the farthest boundaries of the food universe. Explorers and discoverers on prowl for new foods and taste sensations scavenge offal and insects, even eating live octopus to test their mettle. Others believe in the health benefits of raw, unprocessed foods, reveling in their nearness to nature and risking exposure to pathogens in defiance of government regulation. Creative, innovative chefs use new, state-of-the-art cooking technologies to prepare ingredients in untraditional combinations. The most cutting-edge chefs go so far as to risk prosecution by using marijuana in a host of dishes. Seriously devoted foodies will find themselves celebrated here. --Mark Knoblauch

Review
"Food editors need people like [Dana Goodyear]. Anyone who can write so wisely and entertainingly about eating rarities is a rarity herself."—Slate

"Dana Goodyear’s new book, about being a wallflower at the American food orgy, won me over on its second page."—The New York Times

"It is precisely because I am not a foodie that I found such immense pleasure in reading Dana Goodyear's Anything That Moves: Renegade Chefs, Fearless Eaters, and the Making of a New American Food Culture. It was like reading Bruce Chatwin on Patagonia or Ryszard Kapuscinski on Ethiopia, maybe even Norman Mailer on war. I don't want to be there, but I want to have already been there."—Newsweek

"Like any good exploration of an avant-garde subculture, Goodyear populates her stories with all sorts of fascinations. . . . What Anything That Moves does better than talk about weird food is profile the obsessives who eat it. They're an esoteric group whose influence is slowly seeping into the mainstream. You won't want to adjust your dietary habits, but in a lot of ways, it's already changing."—Grantland

"Anything That Moves is frenetic and fascinating and turns the stomach."—Bloomberg Businessweek

“Goodyear is an extraordinary adept reporter and observer. I can’t think of another writer who could have done justice to the material. . . . Highly enjoyable and memorable journey through the brave and strange new world of avant garde cuisine.”—Boston Globe

"I don't think I've ever used the word disgusting as a compliment, but here goes. Goodyear's riveting, hilarious, disturbing, and downright disgusting new book is the perfect antidote to a Martha Stewart Thanksgiving. This journalistic thriller, set among the culinary avant-garde, is all about dangerous eating. A rose-haired tarantula spider roll. Frog fallopian tubes. And the most extreme: an unhatched chick, eaten whole. But this story isn't meant to gross you out; it's a window onto a world of chefs, purveyors, farmers, scavengers, and gonzo foodies."—Dani Shapiro, More

"Addictive, educational, and gross."—Elle

“Goodyear is a witty writer with a sly humor that makes her a genial guide to such a strange and diverse counterculture.”—Los Angeles Times

"Venturing deep into the underground foodie culture, New Yorker contributor Goodyear plunges into the world of dedicated individuals who routinely skirt the boundaries imposed by common culinary practices and tastes. . . . Goodyear’s exploration of this engrossing and morally complex topic provides a solid footing for hearty conversations."—Kirkus (starred review)

"Poet and New Yorker staff writer Goodyear is an insightful, vivid, and smart commentator on food. Here she focuses on the reinvention of food in modern America, exploring the highs, lows, and surprises of cutting-edge foodie culture."—Library Journal

"Dana Goodyear may be our finest longform food journalist. The New Yorker staff writer . . . has written for that magazine on California’s unpasteurized milk movement and Los Angeles’s underground Wolvesmouth restaurant. She does not disappoint here, in an exploration (partly culled from her New Yorker pieces) of what she calls 'the outer bounds of food culture,' which includes everything from the Las Vegas food scene (a frightening notion) to head-to-tail butchering. Anyone who writes about eating 'stinkbugs' is worth reading."—Atlantic Wire

“In Anything That Moves, Dana Goodyear takes as her subject the outer edges and extremes of American food culture, and shows us, with grace, quiet humor, and poetic precision, how closely the weird mirrors the typical. Reporting on the margins of food culture, she reveals much about the broader comedy of manners and morals in American life.”—Adam Gopnik

“Dana Goodyear is one of the most complete and authoritative voices in food journalism today. Anything That Moves so accurately describes the remaking of our modern food culture in America that I swear I can taste it. Combining serious thought and intelligent perspective with writing that is entertaining and inspiring, this is an important book and a delightfully fun read. I loved it.”—Andrew Zimmern

“Dana Goodyear takes us on a wild romp through the fringes of today’s extreme dining scene. The journey is exciting, eye-opening, a little scary at times, and always fascinating. I couldn’t put Anything that Moves down.”—Barry Estabrook, author of Tomatoland: How Modern Industrial Agriculture Destroyed our Most Alluring Fruit

“Finally the ‘foodie movement’ finds a voice I trust.  With a poet’s empathy and a reporter’s nose for story, Goodyear brings us the high-minded adventurers and flash hucksters who are setting the future course of American food.  This book has permanently changed my view of the plate, by revealing the politics, culture, sex, and crime that lie behind.”—Tom Mueller, New York Times-bestselling author of Extra Virginity: The Sublime and Scandalous World of Olive Oil

Thought I'd be disgusted, but ...
By Donna Di Giacomo
This book should come with a warning: If you cannot handle detailed descriptions of every last cell of animals and insects being used for human consumption, then it's best to pass this one up because Dana Goodyear spares no details of a trend that looks like it has the potential to go mainstream - and may be doing so already.

I read this book out of literal morbid curiosity. To my surprise, whereas I expected to be disgusted I came away with my curiosity piqued. As a result, I will not be rejecting any future reading on this subject.

Ms. Goodyear's overall narrative is clear, concise, and easy-to-follow. She also, refreshingly, didn't put on any airs for the duration of this work. She never once thumbed her nose at the readers who are not into "adventurous" eating or living on the edge of sanity (my sentiment, not hers). She just reports on what's happening, bringing you along with her as she gets into the thick of things - and up front with the people at the forefront of the trend of eating every part of an animal or eating animals who have long fallen out of favor as everyday food.

Along the way, she covers every aspect of this new (?) way of eating: She not only interviews restauranteurs, professional and amateur, as well as "fearless eaters," she interviewed ecologists, entomophagists, and restaurant critics (among many others) to cover her tracks and explore the subject from as many different angles as possible.

By the end of the book, it makes sense why she chose to look at the subject from so many angles. Everything just comes together.

I came away from this book with two thoughts:

1. This is the wave of the future. Whether eating chocolate covered grasshoppers and ant eggs will become as mainstream as eating caviar has become, Ms. Goodyear offers credible evidence that eating insects is actually more ecologically responsible, cutting down on our overall carbon footprint, than eating mainstream (acceptable) animals. Then again, I will leave it to trained scientists to support or dispute her on the finer points of that argument. But, in all, I have a deep feeling that this type of eating will become mainstream (and the more gross aspects of it will be labeled "elegant dining." I see it happening already).

2. It gave me another perspective on peoples' eating habits (and I'm not talking from an anthropological viewpoint where eating insects is part of a culture's identity). As I got into the book, I was automatically inclined to be disgusted with every description of an animal or insect being taken apart and used for whatever purpose. At first, I wrinkled my nose in disgust, sticking my tongue of my mouth in a (self) show of nausea, but Ms. Goodyear's quoting of various people made me rethink the fact that we've all been programmed to think a certain way about food (her description of how shrimp eat debris on the ocean floor was quite interesting - and eye opening).

Although I must admit I was almost turned off at the onset by her admission of a fond childhood memory: That of eating Milk Bones for dogs in the back of the family van. Then again, I thought, that as well as the array of animals her hunter father killed and the family ate were her qualifications and credentials for writing this book.

But it was ecologist Daniel Pauly who provided the quote that could easily sum up this book in a nutshell: "Why are we even contemplating eating insects? Because we are gradually running out of things to eat." - Donna Di Giacomo

Engrossing Grub
By Pugwash
Food is a topic that cuts across cultural, racial and ethnic lines so brazenly that the tradition of breaking bread has brought people of differing countries, religions and backgrounds together for millennia.

Meet almost anyone, and one subject sure to engage them is where or what they most like to eat.

This book presses forward with many questions about food. What is sustainable? What is edible? What is food? As the world population presses past seven billion souls, what will feed them. Surely the unholy triad of beef, chicken and pork cannot continue to feed the world. Vegetables and fruits can supplement appetites, but cannot sustain a population.

What can? Bugs, for one. Worms, locusts, creepy, crawly, crunchy vermin that can be prepared by master chefs. But what else? According to this book, almost anything. And as of now, there are cutting edge chefs, food wholesalers, and regular people who will and are pushing the boundaries of edibility outward.

Given reality programming, and the propensity to shock and awe our fellow man, this is not surprising. Given the number of television shows on cooking, eating, engorging, and grossing out each other, nothing in this book should really surprise.

But Ms Goodyear does a credible job in explaining food movements, motivations for expanding our food horizons, and the scary downside of this movement. I found my mind wandering from time to time, and feel this was due to some less than stellar editing. This could have been engrossing ( no pun intended) from cover to cover.

Anything That Moves
By M. Reynard
I used to think I was an adventurous eater. Even a foodie. That is, until reading this book. After reading it, I think I'd prefer not to associate myself with the foodies. Goodyear takes a whole world of underground, raw, illegal, and just downright strange eating and brings it to light.

There are several sections in this book about different forms of food. Some focus on the people that get these hard to eat goods, like ant eggs. Others focus on using illegal product, like cannabis in their cooking. Still others focus on meats from endangered animals whose sale is illegal in the United States. And then there are a few sections on underground restaurants and the raw milk movement.

Goodyear hangs out with a lot of unscrupulous characters. Or at least she did when she wrote this book. People who think nothing of eating whale or procuring quite a lot of pot to make a themed meal. I actually don't care about the second, it's the first that gets me. If something is endangered leave it alone, it can become food when the population has been restored. There are a couple of unique characters though who get their reputation by serving dazzling food and never in the same way twice. Like the chef who runs an underground restaurant out of his apartment. Him, I found quite interesting. Everybody tended to be a bit snobby about their food choices though, and have a strict definition of what a foodie can be. Live and let eat I say (except in the case of endangered animals or unnecessary cruelty).

I felt like this book was comprised of many smaller articles. It just didn't flow naturally like a general book would. There were several interesting topics though, the biggest one for me being the subject of raw milk. It's one of the things I think should be legal everywhere with it being up to the person to determine if they want to take the risk (we can purchase soy sauce and drink it in mass quantities if we choose but it's illegal to purchase raw milk in most states and drink it. I know, crazy comparison, but think about it. It's true.). On the other side of the spectrum I was disgusted with the thought of eating endangered animals and the sheer volume that gets consumed just in CA. But all of it was descriptively written and I can appreciate that even if I didn't care for some of the topics.

I can't say I'll be in a rush to try the majority of things that were mentioned in this book. But it was an interesting look into American food culture and I learned a lot. I even learned some things I probably didn't want to know. This is definitely a book for anyone interested in food to read.

Tracing Your Irish Family History on the Internet: A Guide for Family Historians, by Chris Paton

Ireland has probably experienced more tragedy when it comes to the preservation of resources for family historians than any other region of the British Isles. Many of the nation’s primary records were lost during the civil war in 1922 and through other equally tragic means. But in this new book Chris Paton, the Northern-Irish-born author of the best-selling Tracing Your Family History on the Internet, shows that not only has a great deal of information survived, it is also increasingly being made available online.

Thanks to the pioneering efforts of the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland, the National Archives of Ireland, organizations such as FindmyPast Ireland, Ancestry.co.uk and RootsIreland, and the massive volunteer genealogical community, more and more of Ireland’s historical resources are accessible from afar.

As well as exploring the various categories of records that the family historian can turn to, Chris Paton illustrates their use with fascinating case studies. He fully explores the online records available from both the north and the south from the earliest times to the present day. Many overseas collections are also included, and he looks at social networking in an Irish context where many exciting projects are currently underway.

Chris Paton has provided an excellent guide and resource for conducting Irish research online. This is much more than a superficial list of obvious websites. The author goes into great detail about the various resources available in both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

Don't expect a quick survey of what's available. This work is filled with a plethora of Irish websites and history, all described with clarity and purpose. This book is for the researcher who want to leverage the tools of online research.

I recommend this title if you are willing to do some serious Irish research on your ancestors.

The book arrived in good condition. It was not as helpful as I had hoped but I am farther along in my genealogical research than a beginner. It is an excellent book for beginners. Irish family history is confusing and throws many stonewalls and bricks in the way to finding one's roots. This book does help you through some of the maze.

The Truly Needy And Other Stories (Pitt Drue Heinz Lit Prize), by Lucy Honig

These nine stories are teeming with people on the margins, where destitute New Yorkers and determined immigrants are as much at the mercy of social services, media attention, opportunistic politicians, and "quality-of-life" campaigns as they are prey to grinding poverty, dangerous streets, and their own haunting memories. Delving into Lucy Honig's fiction, one is willingly drawn into an intimacy with these resilient, but flawed characters—among them, a woman who cleans a beauty salon, a high school kid who’s lost a parent, a runaway Cambodian bride, an actress, and a homeless woman. Crossing paths, these difficult characters often misunderstand and sometimes demean each other, yet they also redeem and rescue one other in odd and unexpected ways. In The Truly Needy, Lucy Honig has created a heartbreaking, imaginative world that is the American urban landscape.

From Publishers Weekly
Nine stories, set mostly in New York City, make up Honig's second collection, brimming with complex, vividly drawn characters teetering precariously between alienation and empathy, displacement and communion, despair and perseverance. One heartbreaking tale features Maria, a Guatemalan immigrant whose diligence in English-language class doesn't clarify the bizarre values of the American culture now familiar to her children. Honig keenly captures the protagonist's confusion at being made a public spectacle on a televised political schmooze fest with the mayor. Characters confront identity crises in contrasting social milieus, as in "No Friends, All Strangers," in which a cagey assistant in a small hair salon endures the wearying chitchat of wealthy clients, or "Sights of Cork," where a despairing Irishman on the brink of suicide befriends a traveling American college girl and accompanies her on a tour of his native turf, including the spot where an accident changed his life. World-weary New York office workers counsel a young Cambodian virgin before her arranged marriage in the title story, and, in the most startling contrast of all, a movie star, her director and crew shoot a commercial for a perfume called (as is the story) "Dispossessed" on the streets, using homeless people as extras. Convincing detail and candid, insightful narrative draw the reader deep into the lives of these ordinary people and their sometimes extraordinary revelations. Honig (Picking Up) permeates the collection with a quirky hopefulness in the resilience of these memorable characters and their unexpected moments of human connectionAeven as they struggle, with quiet heroism, to make their place in a modern world they can neither control nor explain. (Oct.) FYI: The Truly Needy won the 1999 Drue Heinz Literature Prize.

From Kirkus Reviews
A debut collection of nine stories by novelist Honig (Picking Up, 1986), who was awarded the 1999 Drue Heinz Literature Prize for her efforts. Honig is not exactly a new writer, but her stories have that sketchy feel common to neophytes: a rough, Im-not-really-sure- if-this-is-done-or-not tone that predominates in writing programs and is usually outgrown a few years after first publication. Many of the works here are quite literally sketchesportraits, that is, in which nothing much happens, rather than narratives of activity. No Friends, All Strangers, for example, portrays the life of a young woman working in a beauty parlor: she talks to her boss, rides the subway, wonders about the other passengers and their livesand does little of interest overall. English as a Second Language offers a more conscious attempt to construct a narrative by showing the efforts of a young immigrant to collect the folk tales and personal histories of her classmates, but it neglects to give much insight into the womans own experiences. Hilda is a more standard coming-of-age story. Here, a young woman reconstructs the life of the elderly spinster aunt who became her close friend during childhood and now represents for her the passage of time and maturity. Sights of Cork differs markedly in style and tone from the other stories: it describes a trip to a little town in Ireland, taken together by a young American tourist who visits it for the first time and a mysterious stranger who has apparently spent some time fleeing from it. Understated and eerie, its the best here, far superior to the title story, which is part of a quartet portraying the home lives of several women who work together in a social services agency in New York. As in many first collections, the phrases are sharp, the sentences firm, the paragraphs tautbut they dont add up to much in the way of stories. -- Copyright ©1999, Kirkus Associates, LP. Review
"I am enormously impressed by Lucy Honig's collection of short stories, The Truly Needy. Whether she is portraying the moving, American triumphs of a Guatemalan mother, a Cambodian secretary's flight from an arranged marriage to selfhood, or the tender relationship between a high school teacher and his troubled star pupil, Honig's stories brim over with memorable characters, enough rich details for modern life to fill a novel, and a heart big enough to embrace the world in all its complexity and ambiguity. The Truly Needy is, in a word, one of the most satisfying literary works of the '90s, one loaded with gifts readers will remember for a long, long time."-Charles Johnson

"Lucy Honig's work possesses a startling, unnerving moral energy; it is work that tells us a good deal about who we are-work that addresses darker moments, and yet, does so without moralistic bombast-rather, with a talented writer's illuminating , disarming irony."-Robert Coles

"Lucy Honig discovers the real America through her masterly storytelling. This is a magnificent book."-Demetria Martnez -- (Demetria Martnez)

Lucy Honig draws the characters in her first collection of short stories with deft, sympathetic strokes. -- The New York Times Book Review, Gardner McFall

Whether depicting a troubled teenager with a crush on her high school English teacher, an immigrant from Guatemala who cleans rooms at the Plaza Hotel or a lonely beauty salon employee who human ties consist principally of those she imagines with fellow subway riders, Lucy Honig draws the characters in her first collection with deft, sympathetic strokes. Most of the books nine stories are set in or near Manhattan. In a series of interlocking stories entitled, The Truly Needy Quartet, Honig brings a group of unrelated peoplea social service organization director with a midlife crisis, her secretary, a Cambodian refugee who is haunted by her past, a homeless couple and actors filing a scene about life on the streetinto uncanny relationships with one another. Along the way, she illustrates how the social boundaries that separate us are so often dependent on chance. Honigs characters never degenerate into types or sink into self-pity, but soldier on, displaying courage in untenable situations and compassion where we might least expect to find it. -- New York Times Book Review, February 6, 2000

Stories about the heart of the world

Honig's characters reflect realism and the spectrum of personalities that comprise the human community. Truly deserving of a literary prize.

Takes you places you've never been -- a fine collection
By suzyf921
A lovely and troubling collection of stories. Kirkus seems bothered by the fact that in many of the stories, there is no tidy resolution -- but isn't that a lot more like real life? (Kirkus probably reads too many books...) In this collection you can really get to know some of the people who you might recognize on the street, or who you already know in passing -- and thus for anyone who is a genuine student of human nature and the human condition, this is a deeply satisfying collection. I had the pleasure of reading Honig's novel Picking Up so was pleased to see that she had published another book and won another prize -- Picking Up, also a prizewinner, is worthy of much wider dissemination and maybe now it will get a second chance.

Provocative stories by a serious, gifted writer
By A Customer
What a pleasure it is to read the stories that make up Lucy Honig's superb collection. The Truly Needy is the work of a serious, gifted writer who pulls no punches as she takes us into the lives of difficult people driven to define themselves in the American urban landscape. The prose is luminous, the structure tight, and the characters compelling. Check out this book for a provocative and satisfying read.

Right Plant, Right Place
By A Customer
Finally a book that's not professorial and gets to the point!
McClure not only compiles lists from several regional experts, she includes down-to-earth quotes from them that lends a lot of authenticity to their recommendations.
She's upfront about what grows well in our alkaline clay soil and what plants can honestly handle the extremes of heat, humidity, drought, rain, cold and wind charactistic of this area.
Another excellent reference for those of us in zones 5 & 6 is Ezra Haggard's Perennials for the Lower Midwest. It's more conversational than a list book, but the accessible text is packed with advice and never rambles. The format gives each plant a page of text with a full-color photo on the facing page.

Excellent reference for the experienced gardener
By A Customer
Saves oodles of time for the gardener who knows "I know there's a plant that works there, but I can't remember its name." Great for taking to the plant store, and for designing the new (or refurbishing the existing) garden. And you know the plants will reliably grow in your zone, which is nice for the novice.

This is ridiculous really. I don’t know who I think is going read this, but I feel encouraged when an audience is listening.

Mom always says I have a flare for the dramatics. It’s usually derogatory, but in my infinite wisdom I have turned it in to a motto for life. You have to admit—if you were real you’d want me to talk to you directly. I would hate to exclude, so rather than risk hurting feelings real or imaginary, I will include you in my narrative. Mom also says I over-analyze things, but I don’t think so at all and since you are my imaginary audience I have decided that you absolutely agree with me.

My grandpa gave me this journal and told me to start it today. Why, I don’t know. Old people always have their reasons. He made the leather cover with my initials in the corner—in case you can’t see it for yourself. He’s from the country, or used to be before he moved to be closer to us, so homemade gifts are his specialty. I can’t tell you how many tables and chests and shelves with pegs to hang keys on we’ve collected over the years. I suppose being from the country or the city for that matter would give your life color—you know that thing they always use in literature classes to analyze novels. (It’s the point at which the author gets slammed. You raise your hand to say that you rather like the New England setting of The Cider House Rules only to be bull-dozed by the question of “Yes, but does it have color?” There’s no true answer to that question, which I rather like, but which those teachers stubbornly refuse to acknowledge.) All I know is, I would rather be any place in any one of those novels than here in mindless suburbia, growing up then growing old in obscurity.

Mom says I take life too seriously. She says I’m only twelve years old and that I shouldn’t worry about such matters. I say I’ve already had twelve years to warm up and I am ready to go. Pa always understood me. He didn’t tell me what to do or remind me of how young I am.

All he said was, “Blythe, I want you to have this to write your life down in.”

That’s it; that’s all he said before he began to whistle some old twangy hymn. For a man who could talk the bark off a tree, this was an abruptly short conversation, and perfectly suited for me.

So left with no guidance, here goes . . .

Talk About Real!!!
By S. Wright
Morgan Menzie's book was the first diary of an eating disorder I read, and is the reason why I continue to read more ED books. She unlike many ED authors talked about things other that just her eating disorder, such as relationships with friends, family and boyfriends. It's not a book that's all about anorexia but does emphasize more so than other subjects in her diary.

In her book, I believe she cover about mmm... three or four years, I really can't remember. Anyway it's a long period of time. One thing that she does that annoys the heck out of me is that she'll skip a whole month of entries but I guess that's the author's way of cutting out insignificant things.

Basically a girl named Blythe, which I think maybe be her middle name, becomes anorexic in middle school because of a friend. On of her friends begins to loose weight and Blythe decides she wants to loose to. But it goes beyond loosing weight it becomes a desire for thinness, and a fear of food.

Another thing I love about this book is Morgan keeps it so real. She said one of the- the truest thing EVER published about our human ways. It's on page 49 and is the...um... 4th paragraph I believe since the book is copy written I don't want to post it without permission. But what she says in that paragraph is so overwhelmingly true that I had to put down the book and think about my life. Although what she says is completely irrelevant to her eating disorder I couldn't write this review without reference to that paragraph.

Would I recommend it? Heck yeah! To anyone, even if you're not anorexic or never have been, even if you think the disease is stupid, anyone should get this book. Recoverees, havebeens, thinking about its and neverwillbees, get the book. You'll understand what it's like to have the disease for this one girl and may have a whole new outlook on anorexia.
