About the Author
Caryl Rivers is a professor of journalism at the College of Communication at Boston University. A nationally known author and journalist, she received the Helen Thomas Award for Lifetime Achievement from the Society of Professional Journalists.
Rosalind C. Barnett is a senior scientist at the Women’s Studies Research Center at Brandeis University. Her pioneering research on workplace issues and family life in America has been sponsored by federal grants, and she is often invited to lecture at major venues in the United States and abroad. Dr. Barnett has a private clinical psychology practice and is the author of scholarly and popular books and articles.

Good evidence of problems in the business world.

The authors of this book have assembled a great deal of evidence to back their claim that even though women are being hired into more high level jobs than in years past they are being held to a higher standard. They also are commonly placed in corporate jobs that they have little chance to succeed. Further, they lack the mentor system that many men enjoy on the way up the corporate ladder. These are some of the problems in the book that women face. I think the authors do expose some valid problems but they offer little with regard to possible solutions to what is going on. Also, this book is highly weighted toward women who are far up the corporate ladder as opposed to lower and mid level female workers. The book is more a warning for women of pitfalls to lookout for in their careers.

A thought-provoking look at workplace biases - and why we need remedy their detrimental effects.

This book lays the groundwork for employers and employees to take a clear-headed look at the biases that are clouding our judgment about women, the workplace, salary and advancement. The statistics are helpful; instead of scare-mongering, the authors challenge us to re-examine the social fabric of the office while assessing the cost of not addressing these biases - for our families, our community and the economy. Very thought-provoking indeed!

Interesting Read

I thought it was a good read. It confirmed many things that happen to me. I feel the war all of the time between men and women in my work place. I just wish we knew how to resolve some of the ego issues that men have and how to break through the glass ceiling.
