About the Author
Ralph Compton stood six foot eight without his boots. He worked as a musician, a radio announcer, a songwriter, and a newspaper columnist. His first novel, The Goodnight Trail, was a finalist for the Western Writers of America Medicine Pipe Bearer Award for Best Debut Novel. He was also the author of the Sundown Riders series and the Border Empire series. There are more than six million Ralph Compton books in print.

"Leisurely" Ride to Wichita

This is another poor excuse for a Western with Ralph Compton's name on the cover. I've read several of these books by Marcus Gallowway and this is the worst.
In the beginning I thought it was about Tom and Huck, but it was only Luke and Red.
Then it rambled on for most of the book about a couple of guys who had no skills to achieve their goal. But they kept riding, leisurely, toward Wichita!
When the Sharp's Rifle was clearly defined as being loaded with more than one bullet, I was annoyed that anyone writing a Western about that period could be so wrong. It was always a single-shot rifle; unlike the Spencer, Henry, or Winchester.
Luke's goal was finally achieved by the Quantrill "gang" without Luke firing a shot. Then the James brothers were introduced to look after Luke and Red.
Few of the books with Ralph Compton's name on the cover written by others ever approach Compton's standards. This will be the last by Galloway that I will buy or read.

A well written story

I like a book that takes you into the story. This book and many others of Ralph Compton are written like Louis L'Amour. I especially like the trail drive series. I actually feel I am there at might with a hot coffee and listening to all the night sounds.

Another Ralph Compton by another author (Marcus Galloway) who can't remember dates. In 1862, Colt didn't have a cartridge revolver. It wasn't until 1873. In fact, almost no makers had cartridge revolvers in 1862. What's with these authors?
