Fallen Land: A Novel, by Patrick Flanery

From the critically acclaimed author of Absolution, a literary page-turner set in the American heartland.

Poplar Farm has been in Louise’s family for generations, inherited by her sharecropping forbearer from a white landowner after a lynching. Now the farm has been carved up, the trees torn down—a mini-massacre replicating the history of many farms before it, and the destruction of lives and societies taking place all across America.

Architect of this destruction is Paul Krovik, a property developer soon driven insane by the failure of his ambition. Left behind is a half-finished “luxury suburb” of neo-Victorian homes on the outskirts of a sprawling midwestern city. To Paul it is a collapsed dream, but to Julia and Nathaniel, arriving from their small Boston apartment, it is a new start, promising a bucolic future. With their son, Copley, they buy Paul’s signature home in a foreclosure sale and move in to their brave new world. Yet violence lies just beneath the surface of this land, and simmers deep within Nathaniel. The remaining trees bear witness, Louise lives on in her beleaguered farmhouse, and as reality shifts, and the edges of what is right and wrong blur and then vanish, Copley becomes convinced that someone is living in the house with them.

*Starred Review* The land once belonged to Louise’s family, but she had to sell it in the wake of her husband’s death. Now she watches from the small plot that remains in her possession as Paul Krovik erects his new housing development, beginning with his own home. But Paul’s vision is ill-founded, and when he loses everything, he sinks into madness and goes into hiding in a bunker beneath his house. Chasing their own dreams, Julia and Nathaniel buy Paul’s foreclosed home and move to the small town with their son. Unaware of the man living below them, they cannot conceive of their danger. As they become increasingly mindful of an unexplainable presence in their home, Nathaniel’s reservations about the move grow to the point of insanity, leading them all toward the tragedy hinted at in the novel’s beginning. This psychological thriller doesn’t stop at suspenseful and chilling, though. Fallen Land deconstructs the American dream to expose its most damning flaws and unsound foundations. The novel is rich in imagery and metaphor, and its conclusions are deeply disturbing. Written with the same elegance and ease demonstrated in Absolution (2012), Flanery’s second novel will keep readers riveted from intriguing prelude to stunning finale. --Cortney Ophoff

Review
“Dazzling . . . thrilling . . . downright exhilarating"—Washington Post

"As in his sterling 2012 debut, Absolution, Flanery balances thriller-novel twists with smart and sincere sociological meditations."—Wall Street Journal

"Patrick Flanery has fashioned a crumbling 21st-century manor that can hold its own among those authors most sepulchral, allegorical inspirations. . . . We follow Fallen Land on tenterhooks from fearsome opening to shuddery climax, waiting to see what it will do."—Boston Globe

“Flanery has planted a modern-day bogeyman tale in this fertile ground of suspicion. . . . He has the skill and the vision to transform the darkness that has infected this country into something that walks the earth”—New York Daily News

“[Flanery is a] gifted storyteller . . . manages to both provoke and enthrall in this densely plotted page turner.”—BookPage

“[Flanery] confronts the traumas of American life with poignancy and the gravity they deserve, approaching them with the care required to help weather the storm.”—BookSlut

"This psychological thriller doesn’t stop at suspenseful and chilling, though. Fallen Land deconstructs the American dream to expose its most damning flaws and unsound foundations. The novel is rich in imagery and metaphor, and its conclusions are deeply disturbing. Written with the same elegance and ease demonstrated in Absolution, Flanery’s second novel will keep readers riveted from intriguing prelude to stunning finale."—Booklist (starred)

"Flanery’s engrossing new novel speaks to modern anxieties through themes of loss. . . . Flanery excels in depicting psychic anguish. Paul is both disturbing and fascinating, and Copley, helpless in the face of his father’s increasing harshness, is eminently sympathetic. The characters’ struggles culminate in a shocking and memorable denouement."—Publishers Weekly (starred)

"Flanery explores family and social mores, cataloging emotional damage tumbling from generation to generation, all woven into a metaphorical tale about the human cost of bubble economics, the undermining of personal freedoms in the name of homeland security and the ugly consequences of the privatization of public service. . . . Flanery’s dark view of human ambition, weakness and complacency is both thoughtful and terrifying. A haunting, layered allegory."—Kirkus (starred)

“Flanery gives every character a nuanced inner voice, allowing the reader to empathize with, if not fully understand, the actions of each. This is a tense, gut-wrenching take on the American dream gone horribly awry.”—Library Journal, (starred)

"Like Flanery’s debut, Absolution, Fallen Land is thematically ambitious—the financial crisis and the legacy of slavery are among its concerns—but also thrillingly tense and atmospheric. The author tugs at the edges of his narrative until it assumes exaggerated, Gothic shapes. Comparisons to Nathaniel Hawthorne, to whom there are allusions throughout, would not be extravagant."—Financial Times

“Now, on the back of his highly regarded South Africa–set debut, Absolution, Patrick Flanery takes up the challenge of what DeLillo calls 'the American mystery' in a new novel that also explores the dark shadows cast by history and old lies. . . . In Fallen Land, Flanery has given us a gripping thriller, and a superb portrayal of how ordinary men can veer into madness, but its real power lies in its recognition of the tragic failure of an American dream that should have tried, at least, to live up to Francis Bellamy's principle of 'liberty and justice for all.' ”—The Guardian

“Patrick Flanery’s second novel . . . combines old-style suspense with a chilling picture of modern America. . . . Fallen Land is an ambitious thriller vehicle for a dissection of America. . . Fallen Land impressively examines how thoroughly the American dream has turned into the American nightmare.”—Sunday Times

Well-written tale of people desperately striving to feel at home in the world
By Kcorn
It was impossible for me to read Fallen Land without seeing obvious parallels to the recent housing crisis, with events in the novel, surreal as they often were, reflecting the feelings of so many who have lost their homes. The alienation and loss of identity of people who've lost their refuges in the world - or are unsettled in their new surroundings - is almost palpable.

At the heart of Fallen Land is Paul Krovik, a property developer who wanted to be a builder ever since he was a young child playing with blocks. To fulfill his dreams, he eventually purchases Poplar Farm. The land has been in Louise Washington's family for generations. Although Louise was pressured to sell the land, she was ultimately unwilling to leave her beloved house. She feels added resentment because she is forced to watch the trees and wildlife on Poplar Farm being destroyed for an inept, senseless plan. She'd been led to believe they would be spared.

This is is a haunting and very poignant work, one which is also at times suspenseful and violent. The actions of most of the main individuals are so extreme that I found it best to view the story as a symbol for current events and passions in today's world - rather than a depiction of believable events (similar to the way a good fantasy may highlight reality in sharper detail).

As time goes on, Paul grows increasingly unhinged and out of touch with reality. Not only are his luxury homes half-finished but his wife and young sons have also left him. Even so, he clings to the home he no longer owns, living in secret within it (how he accomplishes this is too complicated to explain here).

This is the same home which a young couple, Julia and Nathaniel Noailles, have purchased, having left Boston with their son Copley - to start a new life. But Nathaniel has misgivings from the start. He can't seem to find an identity, a sense of self, in his life. Neither can young Copley.

As events play out over time, life becomes much darker for each person. Copley goes to a school with rules reminiscent of Animal Farm, with arbitrary judgments handed out by unyielding and harsh teachers. Paul tries desperately to find a solution to his failed dreams. Louise continues her fight to remain in her home.

While I was entranced by most of this book, my interest waned in the last few chapters. This is where events seemed rushed and made the novel somewhat weaker for me. I had to struggle to find the integrity and structure of the the earlier part of the book. Even so, this is a powerful work and I was stunned by the finely crafted writing. I look forward to Mr. Flanery's next novel.

Fantastic beginning, weird middle, flat ending
By D. Sorel
Whenever I hear that there is a novel about a plot of land that has been handed down from generation to generation, I can't get my hands on it fast enough. "Fallen Land" sounded perfect in that it was about a plot of land that had inadvertently been given to a sharecropping family after the Civil War. But what happens when that family's legacy can't keep the land? What happens when the land is corrupted by greed and crippled dreams? And when another family enters into the mix in hopes of starting anew...will they be able to overcome the cursed land?

While there's a flashback to how the property came into its current hands, the majority of the novel focuses on the land as it is today. Based down from generation to generation in a time when African American families were not considered landowners, the plot had huge significance to the African American family that lived on it. But when the patriarch died, there was no one to keep up the house and farm. So the last woman in the legacy, sold off pieces to a developer who promised to bring prosperity to the land and rejuvenate it. Instead, he divided up the land, cut down the trees, and built shabby houses. All the while, the last woman in the family watched as her property was thrown to the wolves and she was on the brink of getting evicted. When the developer went bankrupt, he had to leave the land...but what if he had no where to go? What if the land had such a hold on him that he was incapable of leaving? Another family moves into the developer's old house to start anew in this little Midwest town. The family is far from perfect and the land seems to further irritate their already tenuous relationship. It's obvious from the get-go that this is a prescription for disaster!

Are you sucked in yet? Well, I was! From the very beginning, I was captured by the characters and their stories. I could barely pull myself away. As I got to the middle of the book, things slagged a bit and I lost some interest as the characters became overly repetitive and stereotypes of other characters trapped in a house/land that was eating them alive (The Shining, Treasure of Sierra Madre, Gone With the Wind, etc). What began as fleshed our dynamic characters, became cardboard cutouts. Still, I plugged through the end as I was hoping for a conclusion that was just as explosive as the beginning. No dice. Whatever intrigue there was in the middle, merely fizzled and died a slow death. You could see the end coming and while certain authors can pull it off, this novel ended up falling flat.

Overall, I would say a 5 star beginning, three star middle, and one star ending...averaging out to three stars...

5 star entertainment with disagreeable assumptions
By Digital Rights
When Julia and Nathaniel relocate from Boston to an unnamed mid western city with their 7 year old son Copley for better jobs, better pay and escape their own haunting pasts their lives collide with a builder that's lost everything, a company that gets an A+ in evil and town that's become socially dysfunctional as it's finances have collapsed.

"Fallen Land" is a taut psychological thriller. It's a winner but one that owes kudos to everything from Dennis Lahane to "Cape Fear" to Jon Cassar. Dystopia sells and Patrick Flanery is selling it at a bulk rate where Nate, Juile and Copley have moved into a failed society of evil corporations managing lives, alienating suburbs, racism masked as immigration, drug pushing psychiatrists, narcissistic parents to consumed to understand their child, cynical "education" that teaches nothing but obedience bullying and tasers and really bad weather. In the end no one can ever rise above it and instead defer to their worst instincts. Some are victims. Others get just what they deserve.

As entertainment it works. We love this stuff. "24", Kennedy conspiracies, "Homeland" "Revolution" or anything on the SciFi channel. In all cases we're not in control, cannot make a bit of difference and it all ends badly.

And there is good horror too. We read/watch with half closed eyes as our lead characters all inevitably dissolve. We want to look away but you can't. I know I couldn't. I LIKED IT! Just like a good Parker novel or Charles Bronson flick. The only thing missing from was our stalker Paul Krovik "calling from inside the house".

My point here is that as entertainment it's great. He builds tension and some of his characters, particularly the son Copley and his father Nate are intricate, complex and thoroughly interesting full people. But I believe Flanery is attempting a greater message of an America collapsing into a state of fear and willing to sell it's freedoms to have it. As the very short term pendulum swings there is some truth to that but on any longer reckoning it's not. Wilson took away far more freedoms during WWI. Justice Taney's court was far worse than any outrage that may upset us about today's Supreme Court, crime rates have been on the decline for 2000 years and the mid west is NOT a giant right wing nation of stultifying conformity. Want to voice your opinion? Join the 2,000,000 bloggers on Tumblr. Don't like the education your kids are getting? Choose any of thousands of options. In Flanery's world we are all heading towards less choice and less participation in our democracy.

Here Flanery writes expressing Nathaniel's opinion and likely his own and I could not disagree more.

"Of course he wants Copley to have a childhood of trees and lawns before the possibility of houses and yards like the one they have bought disappears into a future of hot and unpredictable chaos, of high-density living as the only possible way for the species to continue. The world Copley will inhabit as an adult is bound to be a far more difficult place than the one Nathaniel has inherited. If it has not already happened, humanity is about to enter a new era, when security will matter more than anything else: not just of person and property but also of food, water, health, medicine, the environment. Security will become the defining quality and concern of human existence on the planet and beyond; to guarantee the long-term security of the human species (if such a thing is desirable), we are going to have to leave the earth. Hawking has already said it, and others agree."

Flanery panders to our fears and he does it well. This is good fiction. It's just not good philosophy.

Separate Spheres: The Opposition to Women's Suffrage in Britain (Routledge Library Editions: Women's History), by Brian Harrison

The British feminist movement has often been studied, but so far nobody has written about its opponents. Dr Harrison argues that British feminism cannot be understood without appreciating the strength and even the contemporary plausibility of ‘the Antis’, as the opponents of women’s suffrage were called.

In a fully documented approach which combines political with social history, he unravels the complex politics, medical, diplomatic and social components of the anti-suffrage mind, and clarifies the Antis’ central commitment to the idea of separate but complementary spheres for the two sexes.

Dr Harrison then analyses the history of organised anti-suffragism between 1908 and 1918, and argues that anti-suffragism is important for shedding light on the Edwardian feminists. The Antis also introduce us to important Victorian and Edwardian attitudes which are often forgotten and which differ markedly from the attitudes to women which are now familiar; on the other hand, his concluding chapter – which surveys the period from 1918 to 1978 – claims that many of these attitudes, though less frequently voiced in public, still influence present-day conduct. His book, published originally in 1978, therefore makes an important contribution towards the history of the British women’s movement and towards understanding Britain in the nineteenth- and twentieth-centuries.

In My Shoes: A Memoir, by Tamara Mellon

When Tamara Mellon’s father lent her the seed money to start a high-end shoe company, he cautioned her: “Don’t let the accountants run your business.” Little did he know. Over the next fifteen years, the struggle between “financial” and “creative” would become one of the central themes as Mellon’s business savvy, creative eye, and flair for design built Jimmy Choo into a premier name in the competitive fashion industry.

Over time, Mellon grew Jimmy Choo into a billion dollar brand. She became the British prime minister’s trade envoy and was honored by the Queen with the Order of the British Empire—yet it’s her personal glamour that keeps her an object of global media fascination. Vogue photographed her wedding. Vanity Fair covered her divorce and the criminal trial that followed. Harper’s Bazaar toured her London town house and her New York mansion, right down to the closets. And the Wall Street Journal hinted at the real red meat: the three private equity deals, the relentless battle between “the suits” and “the creatives,” and Mellon’s triumph against a brutally hostile takeover attempt.

But despite her eventual fame and fortune, Mellon didn’t have an easy road to success. Her seemingly glamorous beginnings in the mansions of London and Beverly Hills were marked by a tumultuous and broken family life, battles with anxiety and depression, and a stint in rehab. Determined not to end up unemployed, penniless, and living in her parents’ basement under the control of her alcoholic mother, Mellon honed her natural business sense and invested in what she knew best—fashion.

In creating the shoes that became a fixture on Sex and the City and red carpets around the world, Mellon relied on her own impeccable sense of what the customer wanted—because she was that customer. What she didn’t know at the time was that success would come at a high price—after struggles with an obstinate business partner, a conniving first CEO, a turbulent marriage, and a mother who tried to steal her hard-earned wealth.

Now Mellon shares the whole larger-than-life story, with shocking details that have never been presented before. From her troubled childhood to her time as a young editor at Vogue to her partnership with cobbler Jimmy Choo to her very public relationships, Mellon offers an honest and gripping account of the episodes that have made her who she is today.

As Mellon readies herself for her next entrepreneurial venture, In My Shoes is a definitive book for fashion aficionados, aspiring entrepreneurs, and anyone who loves a juicy true story about sex, drugs, money, power, high heels, and overcoming adversity.

Time for flats!
By Anne Phillips
Tamara was between companies in 2012 and "the idea of writing a memoir had been growing on" her. So, with the help of a professional writer and prodded by an anxious publisher, off she went exploring, exposing, exulting, exhibiting and being so connected. Throughout the book runs a theme and the reverberations of self-help groups, psychiatrists, addiction treatment, cocaine - "mountains of it" - alcohol, AA in all its manifestations, lawyers and scoundrels. Yes, there is the very, very manipulative and alcoholic mother. She NEVER liked Tamara and tried to screw her over in a long legal battle. The father on the other hand is tall, Irish, handsome and very helpful - he is dead by that time. We hear all about Tamara's childhood. Growing up in America as child of the Vidal Sassoon man and an alcoholic mother, then Britain, and Switzerland. What joy and adventures and we hear all about her friends in high places - well, that is one of the reasons we bought this book, isn't it? Tamara struggles at Vogue, then discovers Jimmy Choo, the shoemaker and - with a cash infusion by her father and his managerial know-how - starts the famous shoe company. Only, of course, things do not go swimmingly - Tamara is ALWAYS misunderstood, ALWAYS taken advantage of, ALWAYS the pushover. It is getting tedious to hear her muttering to herself and promising to do better and then - NOTHING. Now why did she have misgivings and still sign and then expect changes?! Really, Tamara! Oh, there is a short-lived marriage to Matthew Mellon whom Tamara met at an AA meeting. Their daughter Minty is now the center of her life - or so Tamara says.

Jimmy choo fan must read; inspirational no :(
By Michelle
Enjoyed book but author a little whinny. Rich girl complains about all that went wrong with life. Wanted more inspirational book. Seems much of her early success can be attributed to luck and family wealth. Clearly smart girl but little to be learned from book for entrepreneur. As a jimmy choo fan found story interesting. Would recommend for shoe fanatic not as inspirational read

A Mixed Bag of Lenormand Lessons
    By schmedrake
I took this book on vacation with me and read most of it through. I'm not a Lenormand expert, but I've picked up a lot of knowledge about it over the past couple of years. There were a few exercises/techniques in this book that I found very helpful and enlightening. But when it came to the keywords, they were just totally off in some places. So when it comes to rating this book, I'm torn. I'd hate to have a beginner read this book and use it as their North Star for Lenormand. It's just way too far off where it comes to those keywords. And the writers placed way too much emphasis in the book on what Lenormand is and is not in relation to tarot, in my opinion. On the other hand, I did find a few of the exercises helpful in deepening my learning. Personally, I get more value out of my own self learning, cobbled together from blogs and videos and posts that I find for free online. I take the process of reviewing very seriously and want to be fair. If you expect this to be your Lenormand bible, then you'll be mocked by other readers when you use the hinky keywords and meanings provided in this book. But if you're planning using this book as one of many resources that inform your Lenormand practice, then take what you need and leave the rest to books coming out in the fall from Rana George and Caitlin Mathews, two highly qualified Lenormand experts. It's certainly not the worst book out there and, unfortunately, may, for the time being be the best of the widely available and affordable books out there at the time of this review. But when the books by Mathews and George come out, this will likely become middle of the pack. I think this book deserves two and a half stars. It's a mixed bag. But since I have to choose either two stars or three, I'm giving it three stars, because writing books in this genre is neither easy nor profitable, so I err on the side of the authors.

NOVICE NEED NOT APPLY... A deviation to a very simple system that will leave the novice confused. ADVANCED STUDENTS MAY BENEFIT
    By Penny
I'm a fan of Marcus Katz and Tali Goodwin, however as an experienced LeNormand reader I felt the book was lacking in some very fundamental ways. My opinion is that they strayed a little off the traditional path in favor of presenting this as they would in their Tarosophy based structured courses. I'm all for finding the meaning that an individual might discover on their own. I think that is one of the gifts they bestow on their students and the methods in which to discover them is a powerful resource for all lifelong students of cartomancy in any form and system. All keywords and written concepts are really only guidelines used as a jumping off point for the reader to dive into his/her own intuition. But I think it is imperative to truly learn the fundamentals before pursuing a system outside its original tradition. And I can't ignore the fact that they do provide some traditional meanings when they deviate. That being said, I have no doubt that a novice could learn to read well under their instruction, but they would not be utilizing the traditional methodology and therein lies the crime in their creation of this book.

The other thing that greatly disappointed me is their lack of addressing the playing card insets. If they really wanted to be ground breaking in their treatment of this beautiful topic they would have laid the ground work where everyone else has failed to do so by discussing the insets, their meanings and how they can be utilized to add depth and layers of meaning to the reading. I'm not usually one for conspiracy theories, however I'm beginning to wonder if there's a weird unspoken pact to only divulge a certain amount of information while seriously omitting vital information to ultimately provide a incomplete picture of the system. You know that old mystery school mentality. That's a shame, and I'm sad if that is truly the case. But the alternative is that their topic was poorly researched - and I'm having difficulty reconciling that with what I think I know of Marcus Katz who is an exemplary academic.

Here's the dilemma - one could certainly learn a system of divination using the method presented here because Katz and Goodwin are two highly skillful instructors who do an exquisite job in general where tarot is concerned. Unfortunately anything else a newbie might pursue would be a bit confusing because it would not coincide with what Goodwin and Katz are promoting in this book and I think the person might regret this in the long run. However, learning to read and doing readings are a highly subjective pursuit that boils down to intention and agreement with your Spirit guides and Source. Some of their perspectives are enlightening and do add value to the experienced reader who can discern what is proper and in accordance with tradition and what is a completely different take on the matter. I always tell my students to accept what resonates with them personally and discard the rest. My suggestion would be to find alternative resources and when you have successfully mastered the system in a traditional manner, go back and take a second look at Katz' book on the subject. Because there will be things in there that could shed light on some images you may struggle with, and ultimately enhance your end result.

As much as I don't want to do this, and it truly saddens me to do so, because I adore this fabulous duo, I would definitely steer the novice in the direction of Rana George's new book "The Essential Lenormand". For more on that topic you may want to check out my review for her book on Amazon.

I rated this a 3 because I feel that some of their insights and learning exercises can be very useful to all levels of learning. But I just can't get over the clear deviation from the traditional system and the impact it may have in confusing innocent onlookers. Whatever your decision, at least I feel I have delivered an honest and balanced view of what you will be getting. Good luck and happy divining!

    Not their best
    By *~Stella~*
This is the first of the long-anticipated new crop of english language Lenormand books to show up, the others being Andy Boroveshengra's, Caitlin Matthews' and Rana George's upcoming works.

From my interactions online, I've seen plenty of extreme reactions to this book and its authors, ranging from virtual worship to a kind of seething resentment verging on pure (and undeserved) black hate. I'd like to remind everyone of how quick Marcus was to replace their miscut and/or lost-in-the-mail greenies when the Original Lenormand was first published and there were all those problems with Gamecrafter. He and Tali also have some very solid writings on Tarot. So I'm going to look at this book on its own merits or lack thereof and I'd like to remind people that Marcus and Tali are neither Hitler, the 1%, nor your corporate overlords.

I suspect they rushed this book too much. There's a 10,000 hour rule, or a 5-7 year rule - whichever - for becoming fluent with Lenormand. You're essentially learning a language. And there's been occasional talk of "is Lenormand here to stay?" etc. They probably gave themselves a time limit for this book, wanting to get it out before the bubble burst lest everything default to the prior situation where a half dozen of us were hanging out at a forum talking Lenormand, the way it was a couple of years ago. Just speculating, but it looks like they were under the gun to produce something (while they were also busy with who-knows-what else) within a year or whatever, and they just didn't have time to really absorb it.

So be advised that this is about the BOOK, not my assessment of the authors on a personal level. It's neither a personal bashfest nor a rave-up, and may well end up cheesing off and/or alienating everyone on both sides. Oh, well.

The first part is a historical overview, and though I'm a little surprised there was no mention of emblem books, it's solid. I've seen a good deal of the historical research before via Helen Riding, however. Of course Marcus and Tali did a lot of research as well, and could have uncovered much of the same info independently, but it was Helen who wrote the Wikipedia entry on Hechtel last year, found his portrait, etc. And there's a short list of websites at the end with some VERY glaring omissions, like AndyBC's course and blog, and Chanah's blog. I think the best in the field are at least as worthy of acknowledgement as that lady who created a stick people deck.

The instructional part of the book has a lot of issues. The copy I have was gifted to me by a friend. From the beginning, there are key bits marked in highlighter pen. The last highlighted bit is on page 34, where the word "teamwork" is given for Mice and she apparently threw her hands in the air. Since then, I have had several other people offer to mail me THEIR copies. To be fair, one had several extras, but the others had a single copy that they purchased, and then decided that they just didn't want it around anymore.

For me, it all starts to run off the rails sideways at the point where the historic stuff ends and the "how to read" stuff begins. They very clearly created their own reading method based on the Lenormand deck. I know how hard it is to write on Lenormand, since people have been after me to write a book for some time now, but I can't think of a good way to do it without appearing to plagiarize my mentors. How many ways are there to say "The Rider brings news", after all? All of us traditional readers read very similarly. And it's possible that all the time and money they put into research came up drier than they had hoped, since Lenormand is essentially a folk tradition.

Of course they are free to create their own meanings and method, and people are free to follow it. I just wish this had been made more clear IN THE BOOK, since I now anticipate many years of explaining very simple, basic, vital things like the Clover being "fast luck" or "small luck" in traditional Lenormand, (like finding five dollars on the sidewalk or a decent parking spot) not any "deeper meaning" like "identity" the way this book says it is. I anticipate years of online headaches trying to clear things like this up.

There's some jargon that's peculiar to THIS book, that will probably end up in common usage a la Steinbach's term "charged" cards for cards that signify a person or sphere of life ANYWAY. "L-space" (a Lenormand mode of thinking as opposed to a Tarot mode), and being told to "say `vignette' not `layout', and `sibyl' not `reader'". (Actually, I prefer "fortune teller", "cartomante", or "reader". Please don't call me "sibyl", I'm old enough to remember that movie.)

Strangely, not long before reading this, I was reading a discussion on slang vs. jargon on an internet forum. A consensus was reached that slang is a kind of tribal marker, but jargon is a deliberate attempt to obfuscate. Jargon is words that don't actually convey information, but sound as if they do. "I have issues with that" for "I'm not listening anymore", for instance, or "I feel your pain" for "go spread your tale of woe elsewhere". I think (or at least I sincerely hope) that the made-up terms in this book may have been intended as tribal markers - like slang - and it should be very easy to pick out people using this method by their use of certain words. But it doesn't have that informal, slang-y feel, IT READS LIKE JARGON and so, for me, sets off the same mental alarm bells that get triggered when I'm reading a credit card agreement or stuck in a bus station hearing Bill O'Reilly rant on FOX.

Some may argue that the jargon is intended to trigger the "L-Space", but shouldn't that be done by the sight of the cards themselves? Simply practice with them and your mind will automatically react to them. There's a lot of unnecessary complication in this book. And mistakes as well, like the statement that Kipperkarten have astrological signs on them. They seem to be describing the Mystiches Kipper, a contemporary deck that deviates a great deal from the traditional images (and I'm not even sure there's astrological signs on THAT one), not the one that Frau Kipper is said to have designed, nor the traditional variations like the Salish and the Leidingkarten.

There's a good amount of descriptive purple prose that reads almost like hypnotic induction, "...a ship sailing calm waters in a blissful winterless paradise", etc. It's all there but "deep cleansing breath...in...out..." The whole thing, for me, reads like someone trying to mess with my head.

There is a faction online who state that this book is what finally made Lenormand fall into place for them. But the usual response I've gotten from them when I question things in the book is shilling, to wit, "BUY THE BOOK! BUY THE COURSE!" rather than any clear explanation that shows they actually DID benefit from reading it. Again, I don't think of Marcus as Jim Jones or L. Ron Hubbard, but the behavior of a lot of the people who have latched on to this thing is disturbingly cult-like.

There's a smattering of solid Lennie information dispersed throughout the book, but the problem is that you have to be experienced to pick it out, and if you're experienced, you already HAVE a method. What they've done here is create their OWN method. I think that's an important distinction to make.

    How to......models
    By Caufrier Frederic
This small sized book (173 pages) covers a set of models that could fall under decision making tools (if you use a broad spectrum for that definition that is).

The models get placed under 4 basic questions:
    1) How to improve yourself
    2) How to understand yourself
    3) How to understand others better
    4) How to improve others

Some models are well known and broadly used, some are lesser known, some disappoint and some are nice surprises.

This book is a very fast read and really stripped down to the basics. The models are explained in single page format, followed up with an illustration. So as long as you don't expect detailed explanations on the models, you will love this one.

    Interesting!

    An unusual and helpful survey
    By W
Stumbled on this little book at the MIT Coop. I've been an analyst and strategic thinker for 25+ years, but have never seen a survey like this that covers so much territory so succinctly. It's a great overview to lots of the common conceptual frameworks used by decision analysts. It's not going to tell you enough to employ most of these techniques, but it does have enough info to point the user towards the right kind of tools for various kinds of problems. Just flipping through it as you contemplate a challenging problem should get neurons firing. My only criticism is that a lot of the examples are drawn from personal decisions, as opposed to corporate or pol-mil examples. Many of these models are applicable to those areas as well (or in fact were invented in those spheres).

    Little Book, Big Disappointment
    By Nick Nicholas, MSW
I was sorely disappointed with this small volume. The introduction announces that it will offer decisional tools to (a) improve oneself, (b) understand oneself, (c) understand others, and (d) influence others. These are all fine goals, and the authors do a fair job of introducing them. Therein lies the problem I have with this book. Each decisional model gets about a third of a page for a visualization of the model, and the authors devote no more than the remaining two-thirds of a page and the following page to introduce the model. That's it!

The Eisenhower Matrix, one of the first introduced in the book is a helpful model, as is a SWOT analysis. However, the constraints the authors imposed on themselves prevented even an elementary discussion about the use of SWOT tables. Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs model is presented, and certainly this deserves more than a page for an introduction! Many of the models were new to me, and more helpful explanations about the more complex ones are needed to make a book such as this one truly useful.

To be fair, the book did include a bibliography, but the books cited did not necessarily lead back to all of the models that had been discussed. Some more supplementary material could be gleaned from the Sources section in which the authors give credit for the illustrations used in the book. However, why is so much detective work necessary? In lieu of the abbreviated introductions, I think the authors should have provided more robust bibliographies or "further readings" section on each of the models. Or, better yet, maybe they could have abandoned the unnecessarily restrictive constraints they imposed on themselves and wrote better explanations for the models presented.

I purchased this book because I have impaired executive functioning, and difficulties in decision-making is one of the characteristics of this syndrome. I had hoped to find a bounty of models that would help structure my decision-making processes. Although the book did have a useful tidbit or two, it was largely a disappointment and did not come anywhere near to my hopes for the book. I would recommend this book only for those looking for a mechanism for finding useful models which, once named, can be studied further in other resources.
