Right Plant, Right Place

Finally a book that's not professorial and gets to the point!
McClure not only compiles lists from several regional experts, she includes down-to-earth quotes from them that lends a lot of authenticity to their recommendations.
She's upfront about what grows well in our alkaline clay soil and what plants can honestly handle the extremes of heat, humidity, drought, rain, cold and wind charactistic of this area.
Another excellent reference for those of us in zones 5 & 6 is Ezra Haggard's Perennials for the Lower Midwest. It's more conversational than a list book, but the accessible text is packed with advice and never rambles. The format gives each plant a page of text with a full-color photo on the facing page.

Saves oodles of time for the gardener who knows "I know there's a plant that works there, but I can't remember its name." Great for taking to the plant store, and for designing the new (or refurbishing the existing) garden. And you know the plants will reliably grow in your zone, which is nice for the novice.

About the Author
Morgan Menzie is a student at Vanderbilt University. She served as general editor for Sisterhood, and Diary of an Anorexic Girl is her first full-length novel. She was valedictorian of her high school class and now she's majoring in English. She has written for The Tennessean, and was editor of yearbook and literary magazine in high school. Morgan lives in Nashville, Tennessee in a cool apartment with some college friends.

This is ridiculous really. I don’t know who I think is going read this, but I feel encouraged when an audience is listening.

Mom always says I have a flare for the dramatics. It’s usually derogatory, but in my infinite wisdom I have turned it in to a motto for life. You have to admit—if you were real you’d want me to talk to you directly. I would hate to exclude, so rather than risk hurting feelings real or imaginary, I will include you in my narrative. Mom also says I over-analyze things, but I don’t think so at all and since you are my imaginary audience I have decided that you absolutely agree with me.

My grandpa gave me this journal and told me to start it today. Why, I don’t know. Old people always have their reasons. He made the leather cover with my initials in the corner—in case you can’t see it for yourself. He’s from the country, or used to be before he moved to be closer to us, so homemade gifts are his specialty. I can’t tell you how many tables and chests and shelves with pegs to hang keys on we’ve collected over the years. I suppose being from the country or the city for that matter would give your life color—you know that thing they always use in literature classes to analyze novels. (It’s the point at which the author gets slammed. You raise your hand to say that you rather like the New England setting of The Cider House Rules only to be bull-dozed by the question of “Yes, but does it have color?” There’s no true answer to that question, which I rather like, but which those teachers stubbornly refuse to acknowledge.) All I know is, I would rather be any place in any one of those novels than here in mindless suburbia, growing up then growing old in obscurity.

Mom says I take life too seriously. She says I’m only twelve years old and that I shouldn’t worry about such matters. I say I’ve already had twelve years to warm up and I am ready to go. Pa always understood me. He didn’t tell me what to do or remind me of how young I am.

All he said was, “Blythe, I want you to have this to write your life down in.”

That’s it; that’s all he said before he began to whistle some old twangy hymn. For a man who could talk the bark off a tree, this was an abruptly short conversation, and perfectly suited for me.

So left with no guidance, here goes . . .

I enjoyed reading this novel. It is about an anorexic girl who lists her goals for herself. She goes away for the summer and things just get worse. She is a bright young women ruining her future. A good read for high school/middle school girls.

Talk About Real!!!

Morgan Menzie's book was the first diary of an eating disorder I read, and is the reason why I continue to read more ED books. She unlike many ED authors talked about things other that just her eating disorder, such as relationships with friends, family and boyfriends. It's not a book that's all about anorexia but does emphasize more so than other subjects in her diary.

In her book, I believe she cover about mmm... three or four years, I really can't remember. Anyway it's a long period of time. One thing that she does that annoys the heck out of me is that she'll skip a whole month of entries but I guess that's the author's way of cutting out insignificant things.

Basically a girl named Blythe, which I think maybe be her middle name, becomes anorexic in middle school because of a friend. On of her friends begins to loose weight and Blythe decides she wants to loose to. But it goes beyond loosing weight it becomes a desire for thinness, and a fear of food.

Another thing I love about this book is Morgan keeps it so real. She said one of the- the truest thing EVER published about our human ways. It's on page 49 and is the...um... 4th paragraph I believe since the book is copy written I don't want to post it without permission. But what she says in that paragraph is so overwhelmingly true that I had to put down the book and think about my life. Although what she says is completely irrelevant to her eating disorder I couldn't write this review without reference to that paragraph.

Would I recommend it? Heck yeah! To anyone, even if you're not anorexic or never have been, even if you think the disease is stupid, anyone should get this book. Recoverees, havebeens, thinking about its and neverwillbees, get the book. You'll understand what it's like to have the disease for this one girl and may have a whole new outlook on anorexia.

A great novel in need of a slightly better translator

As usual, I received this book through the kindness of some giveaway or other. In this case it appears to have been an actual GoodReads giveaway. That certainly doesn't happen much any more!

So to begin, I realize that this book is probably in a genre more generally considered appropriate to the female gender and because of that, as a dude I'm a bit of an interloper. Despite that slight misalignment, I found this book pretty delightful. It's complexity of character made me realize just how bad I am at keeping names straight. After 40 pages I came up short and found I had no clue who all these people were so I went back through those pages and made a nice tidy relationship diagram of who slept with whom and who was previously dating whom and which characters were, in fact, screwing like rabbits in the back storeroom. Of all these there are many examples.

On the positive side, after sorting out all the 'whos' in diagrammatic format, this story had quite a bit to say. The intrigues were entertaining as well as demonstrating a clear and refreshing evolution of character and story. I found myself very invested in the characters and fervently rooting for some justice at the end and for things to turn out just so. I took a couple days getting started but by half way I was staying up late and reading before work to get through it. It does get ahold of you.

On the neutral side, some of the subplots came across a bit weakly. I was tied up in most of them but others just left me rather quizzical. There are certainly high points and "meh" points. Also, in this translation some of the dialog just doesn't come across as very Parisian. At times the characters seem more Midwestern than European and one wonders how a passage from Little House on the Prairie leaked into the novel.

One final item of note is that this book is exceptionally graphic at times. It's not exactly pornographic but it certainly pulls no punches when it comes to who's doing what to whom. If you're easily offended by such things then don't bother. Personally I found such candid talk refreshing but then again, I am a guy and we do have a different view on such things most of the time.

In summary, a grand and enthralling book that could have used just a little better translation job. It's a quick and entertaining 430 pages.

When Life Hands You Lemons...

"The Yellow Eyes of Crocodiles" is a book about the choices people make when they suddenly find themselves in the midst of a life that is not what they expected. The thing I like best about this novel is the fact that the subplots are as strong as the main storyline. Josephine, the protagonist, is trying to keep her head above water after ejecting her adulterous husband. The plan Iris concocts to recapture a moment of fame in her youth changes both their lives. But it is not only Josephine and Iris who are making choices that will take their lives in unexpected directions. Iris's husband, Philippe, is questioning his own values and priorities after sacrificing his life to build a successful law practice. Josephine's husband, Antoine, goes in search of his fortune with the manicurist from down the street. Josephine and Iris were raised by a stepfather who hoped for so much more out of his marriage to their mother. He has accepted the bargain he made until it threatens his relationship with his mistress. Some of these characters find the strength and creativity to re-invent themselves and others sink under the weight of the challenge. The question of how to move on when life is not what you expect is familiar territory in fiction, but this author has taken an approach to the question that is uniquely her own. She allows her characters to make their own choices, good and bad, and the outcome is not always what the reader might expect.

"City on Fire: A Novel of Pomeii"- Book Review

Tracy Higley transported me back in time to the city of Pompeii, to a time that I did not know much about. There was enough description that helped me get a picture of what Pompeii was like before, during, and after it's end.

However, I did not fall in love with the story. I had a hard time getting into it, and there was quite a bit of immoral practices mentioned, or hinted at , that I did not care for. While I suppose that this stuff probably did happen, I wasn't expecting there to be as much as there was in the book before I started it. It lowered my fondness for the tale.

Other than that stuff, the story was somewhat interesting- gladiator fighting, some romance(there really wasn't an overload of romance in the whole story), and Higley even made the part of Ariella, a female, being a gladiator realistic.

I give "City on Fire: A Novel of Pompeii" by Tracy L. Higley a rating of three. I do not recommend this for young readers(eighteen and under) due to some of the immoral things mentioned in the story.

Gripping historical fiction

At the base of Mount Vesuvius lies the coastal town of Pompeii, a city churning with political unrest and filled with a people who embrace all that Rome has to offer. Cato has recently moved to Pompeii after giving up on ever changing the corrupt political landscape of Rome. Along with his mother and sister, he has come to Pompeii for a fresh start, intent on embracing the life of a vineyard owner. He soon meets another newcomer to Pompeii, a young gladiator training to fight. However, the gladiator is guarding a deadly secret, that she's a runaway Jewish slave girl named Ariella. Despite his intentions, Cato soon finds himself fighting the political corruption in Pompeii, while Ariella finds herself fighting for a fame that she hopes will lead to her freedom. Both soon find themselves fighting for their lives and those whom they love.

"City On Fire" is a gripping read, bringing to life the historical city of Pompeii in such a vivid way that I felt like I was watching the scenes play across my mind. It was chilling to observe the Roman customs, of a people devoted to worshipping false gods while satisfying every sort of lust imaginable. The characters of Ariella and Cato are both utterly fascinating, Cato as he encounters corruption and Ariella as she struggles to survive in a harsh world. Their journey to discover the truth of Jesus is a beautiful one to observe, and I marvelled at Higley's ability to write a suspenseful novel that also provides a clear gospel message. The novel is well-written and moves along very well, with nary a dull moment to be found. The reader may have to suspend their belief somewhat at the idea of a young woman being able to truly disguise her gender among 100 male gladiators. But the story itself is simply absorbing, and the final chapters had me racing through the pages as the author brings to life the eruption of Vesuvius and the end of Pompeii.

I thoroughly enjoyed "City on Fire", and continue to consider Higley to be one of the best historical authors in the Christian marketplace. I award this book 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Great, Realistic Book

In City on Fire: A Novel of Pompeii by Tracy Higly, Ariella has been taken captive by the Romans after the fall of Jerusalem and made a slave. Her owner is terrible, so she makes a drastic decision to leave him and change places with a gladiator, disguising herself as a boy. After being unsuccessful in the ring, she is bought by another owner and her lot seems to improve. But her friendship with another slave Jeremiah makes her rethink her decision to turn her back on God. Is He really there? Does He really care? Who is this Messiah everyone is talking about? Then her past resurfaces and threatens to drown her. And of course, the climax of this book takes place during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius.

I really enjoyed this book about ancient Rome. The history it contains seems to be true, and in the afterword, Higly tells how she researched this book. The story is exciting and suspenseful, keeping one reading. And the characters are well-rounded and believable. It's a relatively small thing, but I appreciated that no matter how hard Ariella trains, she is unable to beat any other gladiator. I hate it when women are portrayed as just as strong as men because we're not. I'll be looking for more of Higly's books to read.

About the Author

Dr. Gio Valiante is one of the most prominent sport psychologists in the world. He has worked with many of the sport’s top players, including Matt Kuchar, Justin Rose, Camilo Villegas, Sean O’Hair, Davis Love III, and Alexis Thompson. His clients over the past decade have won dozens of championships, and he has become the winningest sport psychologist on the PGA Tour during that time.

Valiante was named one of the 40 most influential people in golf under age 40 by Golf magazine in 2011 and was dubbed Guru of the Year by the Golf Channel in 2010. His book Fearless Golf: Conquering the Mental Game (Doubleday/Golf Digest, 2005) is a standard in golf psychology. He is a professor at Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida, and serves as the mental game consultant for the Golf Channel, Golf Digest, and the University of Florida.

Valiante lives in Winter Park, Florida.

pleasantly surprised

I am a decent golfer, but I don't play tournaments and I'm not obsessed with my scores. I was hesitant when someone recommended this book, but I was pleasantly surprised. I really enjoy the game of golf and the PGA, and this book has insights into the game and the players that other books simply don't have. It's obvious that Mr. Valiante has spent time with PGA golfers and knows what he's talking about. One of my favorite aspects of the book is the research focusing on the mental game. It is extremely interesting to learn about this facet of the game that will make or break every PGA golfer. I was pleasantly surprised about the applicability of these theories and research to my own game. While I am not a pro, and not trying to be one, the practical assertions in this book are explained in a way that will help anyone who wants to improve their golf game.

Greatest book on golf ever written.

Pretty bold title, but true, in my opinion. I was lucky to start young, have a little talent and have Sam Snead for a swing model (TV and newsreels). I got to be scratch (or better) with never taking a lesson. Well of course, the logical thing to do was to try to get even better by reading about the golf swing from Hogan, Snead, Boros, Nicklaus and whatever I could find. I mean, these guys were really good and I was just a club champ. A big fish in a very small pond. It didn't take long before I was over 80 a third of the time and golf was miserable. In fact, I never recovered my form. This book told me exactly why. When one reads about technique or even listens to the spoken word of an instructor, it is processed in a part of the brain that doesn't deal with motor skills (cortex). I plan to burn my instruction books, never watch a YouTube video with the sound on and if someone draws lines on videos, I am going to turn it off. I vow to never watch a swing analysis on TV, read anymore instruction ever. I plan on doing the things that enabled me to play some decent golf. For example throw balls under/sidearm and swing in my grandaughters swing set.

A good gift for the golfer who has a large stack of unread golf books!

This book could easily have been called "In Defense of Sports Psychology in Golf". The first 150 pages of the 220 in the book all have the definite feel of a validation for the author's current place in sports. If you make it past the glamorization of the author's part in the success of the golfers, there is some reasonable, if not obvious, advice on keeping your head from getting in the way of your golf swing.

The author emphasizes "mastery golf" which really is taking an intrinsic approach to improvement. In much simpler, and plain terms, it is about making your golf game about achieving success by your own internal measures, and not scores or what others might think about you as a golfer. Make it a challenge to learn to putt and build the self confidence to "quiet" the mind and simply execute once you get on the course. This could be applied to driving, iron play, pitching, chipping, or any other category of golf swing. Simply, always work for improvement, and because golf is a game of "infinite challenge" (my term, not the author's), as a learning golfer, there is always something to improve.

So, how does one do that? How does one keep their head out of the game at the most important time, namely during the execution of the shot? The answer is quite simple, and safely buried in narrative from the author, positive belief in the execution of your own golf capability as it pertains to any given shot. You're never going to think positively about making a 20 foot putt, until of course you've done it enough times to convince yourself that you can do it. Keeping in your head that you cannot, is self doubt and one of the key negative thoughts that the author would like you to eliminate from your head.

The book has countless stories on helping high profile golfers, and of course, because every golfer has an inflated opinion of the golf game (when off the course), all these tips and pieces of advice should apply to any old reader that happens to play golf. This is where I strongly disagree. First, the author ONLY talks of his success stories in psychologically counselling golfers. He goes to the trouble of preaching to learn from your mistakes, but in fact, he never illustrates any professional mistakes he might have made of course thinking that these would be of no teaching value. The average reader does not have 1/10th of the skill of a professional golfer and has orders of magnitude more justification in having self doubt when faced with a shot from a fairway bunker into a green 150 years away. The book doesn't even have a single example of how successful these techniques are for amateur golfers, no less a success rate for amateurs. So, who is the book really targeted at? In many ways, I believe the author does exactly what he counsels the reader NOT to do, for reasons of ego. It's hard to believe that professional golfers need a 220 page brochure for his professional services. At the same time, the idea could be to appeal to the guy who thinks he is just about there as a scratch golfer, but this is all based on shooting in the 80s just once.

So, if you're considering this book, think about a couple of things. How good is your technical execution of your shots. If you have doubts, spend your money on golf lessons at a local golf course or perhaps one of the better books on golf instruction. But in either case, the "die might be cast" and you're really just better off relaxing and having fun on the golf course by not worrying about the outcome of your shots. But if you see that chipping the ball is a systemic problem, pick up a book, golf video, or anything that might teach you something and go out and practice good technique. One of the worst problems in golf is that bad habits are ingrained much more deeply than the good ones (in amateur golf).

No real secrets are shared - but okay if you just want to feel good...

I purchased this book yesterday for my kindle. Prior to purchasing it I read numerous pages in the preview so I had a good inkling of the content.

I gave this book a 3-star rating because it has almost no source material. Essentially the writer has chosen to gather and retell the new age mythos. He augments this mythos with storytelling about his own concepts of his life/afterlife - again without providing any real source material. Example: his story of Brian should be physically researchable but there is no real evidence that this took place and all of the afterlife experiences are essentially fictional stories.

This is a feel-good-about-dying book. But, the information it offers as factual is very weak on support. I was hoping it would offer something more than the same information generally shared on any new-age site.
