What Makes a Hero?: The Surprising Science of Selflessness, by Elizabeth Svoboda

An entertaining investigation into the biology and psychology of why we sacrifice for other people

Researchers are now applying the lens of science to study heroism for the first time. How do biology, upbringing, and outside influences intersect to produce altruistic and heroic behavior? And how can we encourage this behavior in corporations, classrooms, and individuals?

Using dozens of fascinating real-life examples, Elizabeth Svoboda explains how our genes compel us to do good for others, how going through suffering is linked to altruism, and how acting heroic can greatly improve your mental health. She also reveals the concrete things we can do to encourage our most heroic selves to step forward.

It’s a common misconception that heroes are heroic just because they’re innately predisposed to be that way. Svoboda shows why it’s not simply a matter of biological hardwiring and how anyone can be a hero if they're committed to developing their heroic potential.

From Publishers Weekly
Can you—can any ordinary person—learn to build on your natural biological endowments to turn yourself into a model of selflessness and service to others? Svoboda's question is straightforward, but the path to an answer winds from evolutionary biology and neuroscience to educational philosophy and psychology via anecdote and personal reflection. But while the journo makes some interesting points, there is nothing particularly new here. She summarizes the basic evolutionary explanation for altruism and describes some of the classic relevant neuroscience work; her two main points are that a selfless attitude can be cultivated through practice, and that learning about evil and kindness can prepare people to act heroically when opportunities present themselves. However, Svoboda presents little hard data to support her position, relying instead on anecdotes, interpretations of past studies, and personal experiences, such as having an MRI scan, attending a Real Life Superheroes gathering in New York City, and handing out small care packages to homeless people in San Francisco. (Purple prose doesn't help, either: Offered a meager gift and a little kindness, people the world had written off as hopeless opened up the way parched blooms do after a few drops of rain.) Agent: Joe Veltre, Gersh Agency. (Aug. 29)

Enjoyable read on a compelling subject
By Kate Stowell
Elizabeth Svoboda's book takes an in depth look on the subjects of altruism and heroism. It explores topics such as why these traits developed at all, and most importantly how daily practice can prepare a person to cultivate a moral code of selflessness.

I especially enjoyed the science and stories behind the bystander effect and how most people need some level of training to learn how and when to intervene, even when it seems intuitive. I finished this book during the same week as the Washington Navy Yard killings and I couldn't help drawing connections to Elizabeth's findings. What made the news was the armed confrontation and show down that ended the killing, but what if someone had stepped up and acted decisively before the shooter came to work that day? Aaron Alexis was clearly troubled and mentally ill for years yet no one stepped up and intervened to prevent what ultimately became a tragic situation, even though there were plenty of opportunities to do so.

How to train ordinary people to make small but crucial interventions puts heroism in reach of all of us.

Interesting Twists in an Age of Terror
By Let's Compare Options Preptorial
First, I was astonished that, for such a new, young writer, the "Neuroscience" in this book is crisp, clear, EXTREMELY well researched, and devoid of the dross of "pop Neuroscience" you find everywhere today (MRI images, PET scans, etc.) which (frankly) often make for a BORING. talk down to us pop-sci read.

This is FAR from boring! Liz takes us on a deftly managed, detailed, page turning journey of point forward research on altruism. You might have noticed that a lot of the Darwinian "selfish gene" literature vs. intelligent design has now started to focus on this very topic: how recent research on altruism "counters" (sometimes with selective editing of the social animal/insect aspects) the selfish gene, dog eat dog emphasis of Dawkins' folk. This author doesn't get bogged down in that interesting quagmire, and simply starts with "let's agree we're social animals," thereby avoiding "pushing" one side or the other of that argument. Even so, both sides will get a LOT of insight and ammo in this gem of a volume.

On the contrarian side of heroism, I also read this with the point of view: "Can heroism and selflessness also motivate terrorists?" IOW, does altruism really presuppose any ethical axioms, or can the neurological and genetic bases of altruism extend to insane acts of terror like "sacrificing" yourself as a suicide bomber, for example, just as much as the old falling on the grenade for your buddies example? Ironies and paradoxes abound at deeper levels of this topic.

Highly recommended, and honestly, much better even as "self help" than most books I review in that category! Liz didn't intend this as a self help book, but I can be honest enough to say that there is a LOT in this book that makes one rethink ego and service to mankind. I won't hype "life changing" etc. but it really is much more in that vein, than some that do promote that and end up flat. If this is a first book by a new popular science writer, I can't wait to see the next! I'm not a fan type, but if someone this young writes this well, I can head for the next world knowing that the future of science writing is in good hands in this next generation.

A fun, easy read on a relatively unexplored topic
By Viet-tam Luu
Elizabeth Svoboda's _What Makes a Hero?_ is a pleasant, quick read on a matter that science has only recently begun to explore. She begins by discussing the evolutionary roots of altruism and heroism--the two concepts being points on a sliding scale of selfless behaviour. Although self-sacrifice would seem to be a trait that would be "selected out", genetically speaking, Svoboda makes the case for the development of social animals favouring what would otherwise be counter to "survival of the fittest".

The author goes on to relate many examples of selfless behaviour; the case studies make for touching and compelling stories even as they help us understand the psychological and sociological aspects of selflessness.

Finally, Svoboda concludes with some practical content on how we call can further cultivate selfless behaviour within ourselves--how to find the "hero" in each of us.
