Roberto Clemente got his three-thousandth hit in his last at-bat of the last regular-season game of 1972. On December 31, 1972, he was killed in a plane crash delivering aid to earthquake victims in Nicaragua. He was 38 He was enshrined in baseball’s Hall of Fame in 1973. Clemente was, as the scouts like to say, a “five-tool” player who could hit, throw, field, run, and hit with power. Though this tribute to him by his family touches on all the important baseball topics, its focus is on Clemente as a husband, father, teammate, and humanitarian. Roberto and his wife, Vera, met in Clementes native Puerto Rico in 1964. He was famous, and she was shy. It worked out well. He was a devoted family man, and, though he loved playing baseball, he felt his fame and fortune were wasted unless he used them in the service of the less fortunate. There are dozens of black-and-white photographs included here, many previously unseen, from the family’s private collection, and they evocatively illustrate the text. Enjoying It

I bought the Kindle version yesterday (9/24/13) and I'm about 3/4 through it. Tons of pictures. I've seen a lot of Clemente pictures but there still some here that I have never seen, (family pictures).
The book is different because you are hearing stories about Clemente from people that knew him. I've read a lot of books on Clemente and I have seen most of the documentaries on him, but there is still a lot of things in this book that I have not heard before.

You finally hear from Enrique (Ricky) the youngest son. I have not seen or heard from him before. He never attended tributes in Pittsburgh like his mom and brothers. It turns out that the reason is because he is afraid to fly; understandable.

There is one story that I have never heard in any book about Clemente. It is also not in this book. It was not in the Maraniss book either. In either 1970 or 1971 Clemente got a hit at home that made him pass Pie Traynor as the all time Pirate leader. I was at the game. Art McKennan announced it over the P.A. and everyone gave him a standing ovation. Clemente never acknowledged the fans. He kept his head down looking at the ground. After the game a reporter asked him why he did that? Was he mad at the fans for something? Here was his answer; "Pie Traynor was my friend. I take no pleasure in beating his record".

I passed that story on to Bud Selig a few years ago (in a letter) and he wrote back to me. He loved that story and wrote that he had also never heard it before. In future books I hope that they tell that story.

In the book you find out that Roberto Jr. has had to deal with his name. Everywhere he went all anyone wanted to do was talk about his father. He understood why and he was always polite and thankful to the person but it also made it hard for him to be his own person. Can you imagine going through life with that name? How could you possibly live up to it?

You do not have to be a Clemente fan to enjoy this book. It is easy to read and you will see a side of Clemente that most people have never known.

I do not want to use Roberto's name cavalierly. He was my whole childhood. I would go to Forbes Field with my binoculars and just stare at him the whole game while he was in right field. I've often wondered how I would react if I met one of his sons. It would be very emotional for me. I would tell them those stories. I wrote a book about my life and I talk about Roberto in my book and the impact he made on my life.

Superb in every way. A must for Clemente fans and baseball fans in general

One of the true thrills of my childhood was seeing, up close many great athletes. None left a higher impression, nor more of a legacy of decency as did Roberto Clemente. Few athletes have had the presence of Roberto Clemente. There have been even less that have had the impact he left. The great Roberto was a magnificent athlete, with a a baseball IQ in the stratosphere.His off field accomplishments ,perhaps, dwarf his particular brand of genius on the diamond.This book, beautifully presented, richly illustrated,with texts by various members of the Clemente family ,is as loving and moving a tribute as i have yet encountered .Many many photographs of the family and of him in various stages of his career, most of which I have never seen previously{Roberto is one of my heroes, and I have collected most everything written on him}The printing and binding are first rate.I was touched, deeply, by the words of Mrs Vera Clemente and her sons.A wonderful tribute from a wife and children to a man whose influence only seems greater as the years pass.Perhaps we will never see his like again. Then again, we never saw it before him, either. HUGELY RECOMMENDED!!!!!!!!!

A Sigificant Addition to Your Collection of Books on Roberto Clemente

This book has been written by the Clemente family and contains thoughts and opinions of family members and others who knew him very well. I believe the strength of the book lies in the numerous photographs, many of which are in color that I haven't seen in other places. None of the photos contain captions, but if you have followed baseball you will be able to recognize most of his teammates in the photos. If you have read David Maraniss's book on Clemente and other biographies you undoubtedly will come across stories found there as well. The book is a quick read with the reflections on Roberto's three sons, his wife Vera, and others who played a significant part in Clemente's life

While a member of the Brooklyn Dodgers' farm club in Montreal Roberto was dumfounded as to why he didn't play more. If he was having a bad game he got to play whereas if he was doing well he was pulled out of the game. He was about to return home to Puerto Rico when Pirates' scout Howie Haak explained for him to stick it out because the Pirates were going to claim him in the draft since the Dodgers were going to leave him unprotected. Haak made it clear that if Clemente quit he would remain the property of the Dodgers, but if he finished the season he would be drafted by the Pirates and would play every day. Pirates' general manager Branch Rickey was well aware of the Dodgers' attempt to "hide" Roberto knowing that scouts were in the stands observing possible players to draft that the Dodgers left unprotected.

I believe Clemente's most memorable quote is when he stated, "If you have a chance to accomplish something that will make things better for people coming behind you, and you don't do that, you are wasting your time of this Earth." I have several biographies of Roberto Clemente and I am happy to add this book to my collection. Thank you, Roberto. We will never forget "The Great One."

In my experience it's rare for someone to go into the level of details about their personal experiences that Yin Shi Zi does. He gives a very precise account of how energy meridians opened for him over a period of time. A lot of valuable lessons can be drawn from his experiences and from his instructions in the first part of the book. -- Qigong Healing The book itself is not a guide on how to do meditation but - as the title says - a detailed description of the experiences that Yin Shi Zi had through meditation. Not only is it a very interesting read but it is also a point of inspiration in many ways. About the Author
Yin Shi Zi was a Chinese Master who trained in classical Chinese medicine and was a professor of physiology at Kuan-Hua University in Shanghai. For much of his youth he suffered from ill health. He wrote Tranquil Sitting in 1954 at the age of 81. Shifu Hwang is a practicing Taoist of the Chuen Zen School. Master Hwang has devoted his adult life to promoting Taoism and balanced health care. In 1996, he established TaiChi People Herb Co. and more recently he established Immortal Cancer Care Foundation for alternative cancer care education in Bastrop, Texas, where he resides. Cheney Crow lived in England, Spain and France before completing a PhD in Applied Linguistics and teaching at the University of Texas at Austin for twenty years. She continues to serve on doctoral committees at the University of Texas while she pursues a third graduate degree.

Excellent book for meditators

This is an exceptionally practical book with clear and detailed instructions for meditation, including a great amount of detail on the bodily processes involved. While short, it's packed with detailed instructions and explanations that any practitioner can immediately implement.

One distinguishing point on the practices, experiences and explanations provided in this book - there is plenty of detail on what to do, why and how, along with what will happen, but there is nearly no mention of religious principles, doctrines or admonitions - despite the author's foundation in both Taoism and Tien Tai Buddhism. This for me makes the book all the more useful and accessible.

If one has any questions regarding the author's qualifications, the second section includes the author's own struggle with both illness and life's excesses, which drew him to the Taoist path. Also included are eight accounts of his own exceptional experiences meditating. This section is fascinating and presents an unusual level of insight into the physical experience associated with higher meditative states.

I've read and re-read this book and have found some of the basic instructions around adjusting the posture and breath very helpful. Part one of the book, which runs just 33 pages, includes the theory of Taoist meditation, its physiological features and specific steps for meditation, as well as techniques for overcoming common obstacles.
The techniques presented in latter part of part one have encouraged me to return to the basics of my own practice and the specific focus on breath also supports my own Tai Chi practice.

I'd recommend for novice, experienced and even expert meditators.

A curious but interesting addition is the author's more recent experience (at the age of 74) with Tibetan Mahamudra practice, including, again, fascinating detail, but also serious cautions regarding implementing the practices outlines without sufficient expert guidance. Those familiar with the Tibetan Book of the Dead will likely enjoy this brief addition.

It's a good presentation of the kinds of experiences you can have ...

Much of the book is a fairly detailed account of the author's meditative experiences, but presented in a laundry-list kind of way: On such an such a day I felt this sensation here, then I felt this other sensation there, etc. It's a good presentation of the kinds of experiences you can have with intensive meditation, but there is little material tying it all together or giving meaningful interpretation of the experiences.

About the Author
RAY RUSSELL was born in 1924 in Chicago, Illinois, and served in the United States Air Force during World War II in the South Pacific. After the war, he attended the Chicago Conservatory of Music and eventually joined the editorial staff at Playboy, helping turn the magazine into a showcase for imaginative fiction. At Playboy, Russell published such writers as Ray Bradbury, Kurt Vonnegut, Richard Matheson, Jack Finney, Robert Bloch, and Charles Beaumont, while also editing many of the bestselling Playboy anthologies, including The Playboy Book of Science Fiction and Fantasy and the Playboy Book of Horror and the Supernatural. His first novel, The Case Against Satan, will appear in Penguin Classics in 2014, and his best known work, "Sardonicus," was called by Stephen King "perhaps the finest example of the modern Gothic ever written. His work also included publications in The Paris Review and several screenplays, including Mr. Sardonicus, The Horror of it All, and X: The Man with the X-Ray Eyes. Russell received the World Fantasy Award for Lifetime Achievement in 1991. He passed away in Los Angeles in 1999.

GUILLERMO DEL TORO is a Mexican director, producer, screenwriter, novelist, and designer. Modern master of the Gothic Horror Story at his best.

No one in the latter half of this century has mastered the Gothic Horror form better than Ray Russell. This collection of his best is headed by his masterpiece novella "Sardonicus" which no less a writer than Stephen King calls the greatest modern gothic horror story ever written. Step back a century or more (or into the future!) and enjoy the modern master of this form at his best.

Haunted, Indeed

I was disappointed to learn that the recent series of Penguin Horror hardcovers all had the exact same introduction by Guillermo del Toro, which not only seems like a bit of a cheat but also seems like a poor idea in encouraging people to buy the whole set. Luckily, the only one I didn't already have in some form or another was this Ray Russell volume, which I picked up, and which I loved.

I was already familiar with Russell as a screenwriter--and even think I had read one or two of these stories before, though I had never put the two together--but this book was right up my alley. If you know Russell's filmography, it's not very surprising what kinds of stories are here. Great Gothic stories that would have been right at home getting filmed by Roger Corman or William Castle (in fact, one of them was) in brilliant Technicolor (that it wasn't), complete with the sorts of lurid but off-camera sexiness that you can expect from those sorts of flicks.

Predictably, this was right up my alley. The meat of this collection are the three novellas or novelettes in Russell's "S trilogy": "Sardonicus," "Sagittarius," and "Sanguinarius." Of the three, "Sardonicus" is the most famous, having been filmed by William Castle (with a screenplay by Russell) as Mr. Sardonicus, but, like del Toro, my favorite of the trio was "Sagittarius," which begins as a club story and features the Grand Guignol in a major role, so you know I'm right there.

My favorite tale in the whole book, though, was the first of the shorter pieces, "Comet Wine," which had a great title (and a connection to "Sardonicus") and which felt very much like the kinds of stories I am always trying to tell in my own work.

The Penguin edition is a nice hardcover, and while I'm not the biggest fan of the cover choice, I do love the coloring. I've said before that more horror stuff needs to be bright pink, and it works beautifully here. Plus, if you hold the book up to the bottom part of your face, it makes a mask, so that's something.

This is one of those books I had to take a deep breath and brace myself for before reading. Andrea Cremer blew me away with her debut novel, Nightshade when I first started blogging. I raved about this book, but I became increasingly frustrated with the characters and at the end of that series, I was heartbroken. Destroyed. In the worst way possible.

And then I heard a little rumor about this book that gave me this flutter of hope. And since it happens in the beginning of the book, I don’t see it as spoilery:

Ren is ALIVE.

Sort of. We’ll get to that. But Ren plays a huge part in Snakeroot and I’m sure the rest of the series. For you Ren fans, that may be reason enough to pull you back into this incredible world that Cremer has created. But there’s more.

This obviously takes place after the events of the original Nightshade trilogy. And while we were stuck in Calla’s head for that series, Cremer pulls back and we get a glimpse of the bigger picture and see what’s happening in this world now that things have fallen apart. Adne is a huge part of the reason Ren is back, and I feel like this will be Adne’s story—Adne is Ren’s half-sister, for those who may have forgotten.

My heart is still fragile after the way it was crushed my last time around with Cremer. But I’m willing to give this a go because I adore the way Andrea Cremer writes a story and creates a world. It’s magic and beautiful and so vivid. Everyone needs to go read this. Read and adore Cremer’s books, and know that the Ren fans now have hope.

Fantastic new addition to the Nightshade universe!

Oh. My. Goodness.
Just when I thought the Nightshade series couldn't possibly get any better, Andrea Cremer came out with two fabulous new additions that completely blew me away. In November 2013, I had the pleasure of reading her adult paranormal romance set in the Nightshade universe, Captive, and guys, it was absolutely amazing! And just recently, I was lucky enough to get invited to take part in the blog tour for Snakeroot (published in December 2013). Needless to say, I didn't think twice. I consider myself a huge fan of Cremer's addictive writing style and brilliant imagination, and so I knew I just had to be part of this.

Snakeroot did not disappoint. To be perfectly honest, I think I enjoyed it even more than I did the original Nightshade Trilogy, perhaps because it wasn't weighed down by Calla's convoluted love triangle. This book was just as exciting, captivating and packed with action, tension and mystery as all the previous Nightshade books, but it was also better plotted and more unpredictable than the other novels. With each chapter, comes a mind-blowing surprise or unexpected reveal. With each page turned, you find yourself drawn deeper and deeper into the story. And, most importantly, you're back in the oh-so-very-familiar world of Guardians, Keepers and Searchers, re-visiting places you know and love, even meeting characters you thought you'd never meet again! What a fabulous reading experience that was! For someone already familiar with the Nightshade world and all the characters, it's a real treat! I can honestly say that there wasn't a single thing about Snakeroot that I didn't love.

The story takes place few weeks after the events of the Nightshade Trilogy, not long after Shay closed the Rift that separated the human world from the Nether realm. Adne (Ren's sister) and Logan (Bosque Mar's son) are both haunted by visions and nightmares involving Bosque Mar, who - trapped in the Nether by Calla and other Guardians - tries desperately to find a way out. Logan, together with Audrey and Chase, are trying to open the passage to the Nether in order to gain their power back. Adne, haunted by Bosque Mar, is doing everything in her power to stop that from happening. Powerful forces are about to clash yet again. Will Adne be strong enough to resist Bosque Mar's calls? Will Logan find a way to get his power back and become the new leader of the Keepers?

First of all, Snakeroot is extremely well written, but that shouldn't surprise anyone, given how wonderfully talented a writer Andrea Cremer is. Her stories are completely addictive, unputdownable, gripping and emotionally affecting. They are also simply entertaining and extremely fun to read. She skilfully expands the Nightshade universe, adding new layers of depth, introducing us to new, exciting plot lines and characters, and utilizing the already fabulously fleshed out settings and ideas. It all works like magic. You almost feel like you're reuniting with good, old friends. Now, I don't know about you, but I love that about books that are part of a bigger series.

As far as characters are concerned, Snakeroot has some great surprises up its sleeve. Readers will be delighted to find out that some of our favorite characters make their appearance in this book. And not only Adne, Sabine, Connor, or the bad guys we so love to hate, Bosque Mar and Logan. However, as much as I would love to rave about who and in what circumstances appears in the book, I can't. It would be too much of a spoiler! But trust me when I say, you won't be disappointed!!!

All in all, Snakeroot is a fabulous new addition to the Nightshade universe. Cremer nailed it yet again. You'll devour this book within one afternoon and will surely be left craving more. To me, Snakeroot was even better - more satisfying and breathtaking - than Bloodrose. Fans of Nightshade series will LOVE this one!

This book is either going to be a hit or miss for fans. If you were ticked off with Bloodrose, you may not want to continue on. For Ren fans … I'm sorry, but I'm not saying anything, and if you read No. 3.5, I'm still not saying anything. OK, so Snakeroot takes place after the Nightshade trilogy. I definitely don't recommend starting this book without having read the Nightshade books. Adne (Ren's sister) is the heroine, and we have Logan as the main hero. Their dreams are being haunted by Bosque Mar, who is trying to escape from the Nether where the Guardians trapped him. This installment is more fast-paced, and it was interesting to read about the NS world from a non-wolf perspective.

An Excellent Primer

By now the number of volumes written on the Civil Rights Movement could fill whole libraries. Yet fifteen years later, this book still stands as one of the best introduction to the early years of the movement. Books such as Taylor Branch's Pillar of Fire and Parting the Waters may cover the same era of 1954 to 1965; this book is a good introduction for those who may be intimidated by Branch's comprehensive volumes. Rather than trying to cover everything, the book takes its cues from the documentary series and examines a select set of pivotal moments of the movement: school desegregation, the Montgomery bus boycott, the march on Washington, the Selma to Montgomery march and others. Each chapter delves into the story of the events, but also fleshes out the areas between these momentous events, both telling the background and hearing the experiences of those there, in their own words. The book is readable, not the dry tone that many associate with history books. But most of all it gives the reader the chance to delve into an important part of American history in the second half of the 20th century. This is an excellent book that should be picked up by anyone wanting to get a sense of where America was moving in these pivotal eleven years.

Excellent Book on the Civil Rights Journey

If I taught 20th century history I would include " Eyes On the Prize" as a key part of my course. High schools, colleges and Church groups should also use this book to guide any discussions on racism and the hisotry of the civil rights era. An excellent chronology with the necessary detail that lays out the start of the Civil rights journey through 1968. Well written, easily understood and based on facts this book identifies the long difficult fight for equality. The underlying truth that makes this book so good is that those who marched, conducted sit-ins and died used the US Constitution as the basis to right the wrongs of inequlaity and racism.

On the cusp of Iran’s entry into modernity, the rules and tenets that had traditionally defined the Iranian home began to vanish and the influx of new household goods gradually led to the substantial physical expansion of the domestic milieu. Subsequently, architects, designers, and commercial advertisers shifted their attention from commercial and public architecture to the new home and its contents. Domesticity and consumer culture also became topics of interest among politicians, Shiite religious scholars, and the Left, who communicated their respective views via the popular media and numerous other means. In the interim, ordinary Iranian families, who were capable of selectively appropriating aspects of their immediate surroundings, demonstrated their resistance toward the officially sanctioned transformations. Through analyzing a series of case studies that elucidate such phenomena and appraising a wide range of objects and archival documents—from furnishings, appliances, architectural blueprints, and maps to photographs, films, TV series, novels, artworks, scrapbooks, work-logs, personal letters and reports—this book highlights the significance of private life in social, economic, and political contexts of modern Iran.

About the Author

Pamela Karimi is Assistant Professor of Art History at the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth. She received her PhD in history and theory of art and architecture from MIT in 2009. Her primary field of research is art, architecture, and visual culture of the modern Middle East.
