Hazardous Duty (A Presidential Agent Novel Book 8), by W.E.B. Griffin, William E. Butterworth

The Presidential Agent adventures return in the most harrowing novel yet in the #1 New York Times–bestselling series.

Mexican drug cartels are shooting up the streets of Laredo and El Paso. Somali pirates are holding three U.S. tankers for ransom. The President is fed up and has what he thinks is a pretty bright idea—to get hold of Colonel Charley Castillo and his merry band and put them on the case. Unfortunately, that will be difficult. Everybody knows that the President hates Castillo’s guts, has just had him forcibly retired from the military, and now Castillo’s men are scattered far and wide, many of them in hiding. There are also whispers that the President himself is unstable—the word “nutcake” has been mentioned.

How will it all play out? No one knows for sure, but for Castillo and company, only one thing is definite: It will be hazardous duty.

From Booklist
In Griffin’s latest Presidential Agent novel, President Clendennen is having major problems fighting his much-ballyhooed wars on drugs and piracy. Casting about for a sure-fire way to score some big points in the press, Clendennen comes up with a plan that startles everyone around him. He wants to bring back agent Charley Castillo, long on the outs with the president, return him to active duty, and task him with bringing down the Mexican drug cartels and, at the same time, having a go at those pesky Somali pirates. So far it all sounds like pretty standard thriller fare, but throw this into the mix: there is a very real chance that President Clendennen is mentally unbalanced. This has been hinted at in previous novels in the series, but this time it’s a major plot thread. Has the president lost his mind? And, if so, how will his insanity affect the future of the country? The action is solid, and Charley is always an interesting guy to hang around with, but it’s that other story line, the one involving the president’s mental stability, that really captures our interest. --David Pitt

What Happened?
By W.E.B Fan
I have been a fan of all of W.E.B Griffins military and spy themed novels but this one falls well short of everything I have read before. Gone are the intrigue, mystery, and action of previous books, this book is confusing and pointless, nothing happens, nothing is resolved and the story lines just end with no real reason. In the end of the book Griffin puts an afterword that he was having a hard time writing this novel so he tried to make it funny like MASH, he failed in my eyes, this book was a waste of time and I wish I had not pre-ordered it.

My Last WEB Griffin Book
By Richard B
First let me say I have been a huge WEB Griffin fan for many years. I own virtually every series and every book! Sadly this will be the last one I every buy! Since he has taken on "Co-Writers" the quality has diminished greatly. This last book, Hazardous Duty, was the last straw for me. It was the poorest excuse for a book and were I WEB Griffin, I wouldn't want my name associated with it!

Can I Get a Refund?
By Paul Christian
I received the book on Kindle at midnight, finished it at about 4pm (with a couple of breaks in there for naps.) I love the author's books (and let me clarify here, I've read most of them, starting with Brotherhood of War in the late 80s,) but was extremely let down by this one. And yes, I read the 'afterward' and the author's explanation. I'm sorry, I just can't get behind the reasoning to turn out a shoddy book like this.

Sadly disappointed. I'll be extremely wary of the next book.
