Matt Keller is the Lead Pastor of Next Level Church (NextLevelChurch.com), the church he planted in 2002 in Fort Myers, Florida. He is also the author of the book The Up the Middle Church, a book designed for leaders and churches to do ministry more effectively one yard at a time.

A wrong definition of success

"Living up to your potential" is a prominent theme in current Christian writing and preaching, but can be a slippery slope. God of the Underdogs, by Matt Keller, is a new contribution to this genre, and its message is that all of your natural insecurities and lack of natural abilities will not keep God from using you to be a great success. The exception it take with this seemingly innocent line of thought is the definition of success.
The examples given are men of scripture who became kings, conquered armies, birthed nations and, of course, Esther, who saved her people as well. Keller casts Jesus, the Son of God, as an underdog Who succeeded anyway. It would seem Keller created a catchy paradigm and then bent accounts of scripture to make the point.
Why do I find fault with this so often welcome message? Because God equips His own to do His will, and the success or failure may not be seen for generations or be measurable in human terms. Inconvenient to the prosperity and success gospel are the Christians who were tortured, scourged, stoned, sawn asunder, and lived destitute and tormented. In God's measure, these were so successful that the Hebrew writer declares "the world was not worthy of them."
It is God's plan that His followers may give their testimony, only to be killed, and their bodies left lying in the streets (Revelation 11:7-8). Are you in - for whatever "success" God has for you? It's a small thing to ask by the One who suffered the cross.
I am not at all comfortable being characterized as an "underdog" Christian. I am better described as an armored up soldier (Ephesians 6), under the command and bidding of the Lord of Hosts. I have trusted Him with "my security," "my potential" and finally my provision because first and foremost I am mere clay that forms a house not made with hands in an eternal kingdom which cannot be shaken. Be careful what you read, lest this slope threatens to measure my Godliness with earthly shallowness.

High Octane Hope for Underdogs Everywhere!!!!

If you have ever felt unqualified, labeled by your past, unrecognized, under privileged, inadequate, insecure, under-appreciated and overwhelmed you MUST drink deep from this book, and from the God it unveils.
We all have labels and insecurities but there is a God who is not limited by them, and He desires to use us (Underdogs) to change the world! That is the hopeful message laced throughout this book.
It is a valuable read for anyone wrestling through these ideas (all of us) and also is a great text to pass along to a friend (again, who can't relate to this message?).
Matt Keller walks us through classic passages in the Bible that demonstrate God's ancient desire to use Underdogs to change the world with the following chapters:
Chapter 1: David - I'm Not Qualified Enough
Chapter 2: Paul - My Past is Too Bad
Chapter 3: Jacob - My Reputation is Too Scarred

Hope when you feel like the "little guy"

If you've ever felt overwhelmed, unnoticed, or under-qualified, this book is for you. Matt dives into story after story of people from the Bible who had the odds stacked against them, but prevailed in spite (maybe even because!) of their obstacles.
Through the lens of planting a church without a big team, budget, or plan, Matt shows us how each of these biblical stories tie into his own. But he also shows us how they tie into each of our stories. I love how he steps out on the ledge again and again to share his own sense of inadequacy and uncertainty in the hard moments of his life in a way we can all relate to. Prepare to be inspired, challenged, and to rise above the temptation to lay low when God has called you to change your world.
