About the Author

Gincy Self Bucklin has been teaching riding for more than 60 years. Her students have included recreational riders of all ages and levels, many of whom have also shown successfully and some of whom have become professionals themselves. While many experienced instructors teach only advanced riders, Gincy has also worked extensively with beginners and intermediates, believing that in order to be successful at the advanced level, riders must know and perfect the fundamentals from the start. She now works with instructors to share the teaching methods presented in her books.

Gincy’s mother was well-known equestrian author Margaret Cabell Self. Gincy was also fortunate to grow up in an area that had many world-class instructors and clinicians, including Sally Swift, George Morris, and Nuno Oliveira. Some of her early instructors trained with European trainers during the 1920s and ’30s while the cavalry, where much of the equine knowledge was developed, was still in existence. Gincy is a retired Centered Riding instructor and is an American Riding Instructors Association level IV instructor.

Gincy has been writing about horses and riding since 1987. She is the author of What Your Horse Wants You to Know, How Your Horse Wants You to Ride, and More How Your Horse Wants You to Ride. She has been a contributor to national horse magazines, including Equus and Horse Illustrated. Currently she writes a regular column for Riding Instructor, the quarterly publication of the American Riding Instructors Association (ARIA), and maintains her own website, http://whatyourhorsewants.com. Gincy lives in East Dummerston, Vermont.

WOW!
By Barbara A. Seidel
What a beautiful book! Through her years of experience, Gincy has created innovative techniques to create riders who will have confidence in their connection with their horse on the ground and under saddle. This book walks you through her Riding 101 from what to wear(down to unmentionables) and how to get to know your horse and help him be comfortable with you to an introduction to jumping. In addition to the usual basics, you learn how to meet a horse and handle the daily grooming safely and comfortably for both of you.You also learn how to have a soft and responsive leg, good balance, and how to give a sophisticated ride to your horse among other things.

Riding directions are clear and detailed in and easy to learn, step-by-step, easy to read detail that makes having the book around the barn really useful. Aside from the wonderful clarity of the illustrations is the variety of people and styles of riding covered. Want exercises to do on the ground to help you in the saddle? It's here. Want some help in safely leading a horse in and out of his stall? It's here. Having difficulty with posting or sitting the trot? Check with Gincy's book. English and Western basics are there.

If you are an instructor working with beginner to intermediate riders, here is the book to recommend to your students. It is also a rather innovative way to create confident riders from day 1.It is almost a set of lesson plans for your work based on Gincy's innovative way to help create students with relaxed legs, good balance and a real sense of what the horse needs to hear from his rider.

And, it is sooooo darn beautiful. Great photos, headings that make it easy to check on a specific issue, useful stories to help illustrate a point that are set off from the rest of the text so you can decide what you need right this instance. I think the electronic text would be very useful to carry with you to the barn. But I would hate to miss out on the paperback hard copy.I plan on carrying the book with me to my barn and recommending it to all my horsey friends there as well as to my trainer as a basic text for her students.

Next-best thing to being coached by the author herself!
By SLO
Gincy has been my long-term (cyber) friend and mentor, and her books have done a lot to help me become a better horsewoman and make my horses happier. Next-best thing to meeting her in person (not the easiest thing, as we live in opposite parts of the world) and being coached "live".

Her new book, The Gentle Art of Horseback Riding, sums up and deepens the content of her previous books, still treating all important aspects, be it how to get a novice rider prepared and guiding him through the first steps of approaching a horse, then through handling, grooming, tacking to first mounting, gaining a safe seat, and then all the way through to higher levels of riding.

What I really like is that Gincy very deeply takes into consideration that a horse has feelings and personality and deserves to be treated with consideration, so the partnership is a mutual, respectful exchange, instead of the "traditional" approach of the rider being the "boss" and the horse a "thing" or "instrument" for sport and leisure.

I have been riding for over 45 years, but still find a lot of new helpful hints in the book, and am constantly discovering treasure after treasure. All those "lightbulb" moments are invaluable. I cannot recommend enough to read it over and over, very attentively, as there are so many subtleties which are very important.

This book is a must for every rider, be he a beginner, fairly advanced or of an upper level, as everything is so well explained and makes perfect sense. A great help also for trainers who are teaching young horses the basics, then higher levels of being ridden in a relaxed, balanced, happy way. For riding instructors, this book is a big help for them in their teaching, giving very valuable insight on how to build up lessons and step-by-step teaching of their students.

Dear Gincy, my horses and I thank you from the bottom of our heart for what you have done and keep doing for riders and horses all over the world!

Great Book!!
By Teresa
Excellent book for horse riding beginners and is easy to read. The book covers both English and Western riding (hence the cover) and starts with chapter one on riding attire and finding the right instructor and ends with chapter twenty on jumping; with everything in between on grooming, how to put on a rope or nylon or leather halter, mounting, topics on riding include starting, stopping, turning, handling the reins, a whole chapter on riding in the saddle, stirrups, riding for faster gaits, bits and bridles, cantering and galloping, and riding up hill. The books includes many illustrations and pictures. This book is also very detail on exercises the rider should do. The "about the author" page states that she has been teaching riding for more than 60 years and does use examples of her experiences, as well as, stories other have told her in the book.
