Where I red this story before?

Hey yo! Hobbits go... oh, sorry, they are not hobbits, they arewarrowans - litle guys from peaceful land, but with some strange anddark areas nearby. So, I will not re-tell whole story here and yes, Ihave red, that McKiernan planned this series to be some kind of squeelto Tolkien's LotR and Tolkien's estate denied that. Till reading thisbook I have thought, that the biggest plagiat of LotR is Terry Brooks'Shannara (first two or three volumes), but after reading INTO THEFORGE I thing this one wins. Just compare - warrowans are likehobbits, the task is to deliver coin to somewhere (to elf lord Agronliving on the far east - nearly same direction as Sauron in LotR),crossing dead forrest with enemies on trail can be easily compared tofirst encounter with nazguls in LotR, first encounter with elves -here dylvans - likewise. And dark Mage Modru in Iron Tower let meremember Sauron and his Dark Tower (and even Saruman with histower). And the stories goes on like copy of LotR in nearly every way- save they didn't cross mountains "underway" (like throughMoria in LotR), but dwarves showed them narrow and top-secret path. Atthe end of this story we have "Companion" of two warrowansnamed Tip and Beau, two elves Lorric (he) and Phais (she) and, ofcourse, one dwarf Bekki. And together they will keep going andgoing... ...till they deliver this ordinery coin (no magic in it? No,it's just symbol). Considering characters - warrowans are... (explicitly said) and they behave like ... (or 5- years childrens)even in situations when they are supposed to keep mouth closed(interrupting even elf-lord or so). Of course I have to admit, thatthe story is well made, profi-written, but still it's only LotR's copyand it will never be more (for me) than that. Sorry, bu I will not buy2nd volume, may be I'll borrow it from some of my friends but may benot.

The Fantasy Equivalent of Comfort Food

Reading a Dennis L. McKiernan novel is like sitting down to a meal of your favorite comfort food (fried chicken and mashed potatoes for me!). You always know what to expect and although you've consumed it countless times before, you still savor every bite. Sure, McKiernan doesn't break any new ground here, but he tells his stories well, filling them with the heroic good guys, evil bad guys, and an epic quest that makes this an enjoyable escape into familiar territory.

Into the Forge is Book One of the Hel's Crucible Duology. While this two-part series is supposed to tell the story of the War of the Ban, we don't see much of the actual war until late in this book. Instead, we get the tale of two Warrows (think Hobbits or mini-Elves) and their mission to deliver a token to a king halfway across the world. What this serves to do is narrow the focus of the tale McKiernan is telling. This story is almost single-threaded, meaning that the narrative never departs from the two Warrows' point of view. And since they're together for most of the book, you end up with a single, simple plotline to follow. (If only some other authors had this kind of focus.)

I recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a light, quick fantasy read. Whether you've read any of McKiernan's Mithgar tales or not, you should be able to jump right into this one. If you're looking for something totally original or with a more complex tangle of plot lines, you probably want to give this one a pass.

Many people are speaking of a Tolkein rip-off. Well, _Into the Forge_ has a person of diminutive stature as the main character, he is on a quest, and possesses an important object that is round (for Bilbo a ring, for Tip a pewter coin). But folks, that's about as far as it goes. The main character being a Warrow (similar to a Hobbit) does *not* automatically make it a rip-off. And as every fantasy novel has a quest, that's hardly offensive. It's actually rather classic. So that's my support for the book.
I will agree with the comments about the characters being slightly immature, but that is most likely from McKiernan's efforts to make them "ordinary people", i.e. innocent. It works-- you sympathize with the characters and feel for them througth their trials.
This book was not the best ever, but it's good. And it's definitly McKiernan. It's worth reading if you've read any other McKiernan (probably not the one I'd start with, as he uses a lot of stuff from previous books--none of it's necessary, but it may help). So, four stars on my list-- a good, solid fantasy quest with touches of greatness and, yes, originality.

If you have ever wondered how unsafe drugs make their ...

If you have ever wondered how unsafe drugs make their way into the market, or if you have ever tried to get into a clinical trial, or if you wonder how risky clinical trials are, this book is for you. The author has travelled, interviewed, and read widely in order to gather her research (it's clear, for example, that if you have a heart attack, you'd do well to have it in Warsaw!). But there is a caveat here: this book is academic in nature and is not a page-turner in the usual sense. The information is pure gold, but you will on occasion have to plow through the bloated language of social anthropology. That said, once you get used to doing so, this is the stuff of both nightmare and hope. Clinical trials are subject to all the flaws of any human endeavor, and as awful as some of the flaws are, there are also efforts to correct the flaws, protect people, and ensure safe drugs. The book puts a whole new light on "informed consent"--basically, we aren't very informed and in some trials, information is withheld. As future or current patients, this book is a treasure.

INSPIRING BOOK FOR THOSE WITH ANXIETY AND FEAR IN THEIR LIFE

Having experienced more than my share of, mostly baseless, anxiety and fear in my life I thought this book would be of special interest to me, and I was right. Not certain I have ever totally understood or knew the origin for my anxiety-filled life, but it was there and I had to face it and fight it in order to achieve any joy in life.

Ms. Anker's very detailed and inspiring book about her own fight to break the hold of fear and the examples and advice of others that she has interviewed offers a personal look at the problem and methods to resolve the restraints in life that one must deal with and conquer if they live a life of fear, but wish to live a more normal and fulfilled life style.

Many of my personal problems I have resolved on my own over the years to where I believed I was living a pretty fulfilling life when I consider where I started from; but reading Ms. Anker's book "Some Nerve" opened my eyes to the fact that there is still farther down the road to freedom from fear that I can travel in my journey to a full, anxiety-free life.

For those who suffer from anxiety and are dealing with fears of what other individuals consider as 'regular life' this book offers in clear, non-technical details and from a very personal standpoint so much valuable information and so many ideas to think about to help the fear-ridden break the chains and strains of anxiety and motivate them to start to move into a joyful, fun, relaxed life. For the reader who has never dealt with facing and beating anxious fear, "Some Nerve" is a very well-written book about methods for achieving success over one's self that the reader will still find inspiring and rewarding.

This Is Like Sharing Life's Fears With A Friend Who Understands

I love this book despite the fact that I am a single man who seems to have little in common with the author. I do come from a background where the world was viewed as a dangerous place and I was only to take chances when I absolutely had to do so. As a result, I needed to read this book.

The author is open an honest about the fears she faces in life. I have a number of the same fears. Acknowledging one's fears to others is not an easy thing to do but after reading this book I will be more open to doing so.

For me there are two key messages in this book which are not new but are important. The first is fears need to be challenged because once a person gets accustomed to listening to those fears the fears become even stronger and multiply. The other is the need to get help because it is easier to face fears with others by our side.

This is not so much a self-help book but rather a book about a woman with two children in her 40's realizing it is not too late to challenge lifelong fears. The self-help come in learning lessons that the author learned from others and realizing that if she can change her life, you can as well.

Patty Chang Awker comes across as a humble, nice, friendly person with whom both men and woman can identify. I wish I could go up to her and talk about my fear of swimming in the ocean or my fear of heights, knowing that she would be supportive and let me know that I could conquer those fears if I wanted to do so. Reading this book is the next best thing to doing that.

This is a really fantastic book -- an interesting story told with sensitivity and a great sense of humor. You'll be laughing at loud, and feel touched at the same time.

Some Nerve documents the author's journey -- and the journeys of other people she encountered in her travels -- to overcome lifelong fears in order to live more richly. Most people have (or have had) fears that inhibit them in one way or another, and will therefore be able to relate to this theme. But for me, the subject turned out to be secondary to the great writing. The author's depictions of people are finely wrought and touching, and her perspectives on the world are insightful and very funny. I was amazed at the distinct writer’s voice that emerged from a first-time author.

Putting it in the "self-help" section does not remotely do justice to the engaging storytelling. This is not an "overcome your fears in 10 easy steps" kind of book. Rather, the insights in Some Nerve emerge from rich storytelling and sympathetic, real-life characters.

You will really enjoy this book, and you'll want to get it for all of your friends to read, too.

Too much focus on food.

This book should be re-subtitled, "Intelligent, emotional, mysterious and beautiful so let's kill it and eat it." The author simply regurgitates the amazing facts that other researchers have been expounding on for years. Perhaps I would have enjoyed the book somewhat if this was the only flaw, but the author's constant mention of the killing and eating of these magnificent creatures gets rather disturbing. It should not be cataloged as a biology book at all. Even though the author investigated and, as mentioned before, sites some amazing research into the species, she focuses more on cuisine (not even sure if I should use that term) rather than science. Rarely does a section not contain a reference to a slaughtered octopus or a mention of using them as food...Including pictures and recipes??... If you are actually interested in the science, biology and social life of the octopus, I would recommend; Octopus: The Ocean's Intelligent Invertebrate, by Roland C. Anderson, Jennifer A. Mather and James B. Wood.

The Octopus as Object

Octopusses are fascinating, highly intelligent and alluring animals. Not nearly enough of that comes through in this book, which emphasizes the culinary delight of dining on calamari, the details of octopus harvesting, and the complex chemistry of the animal's various organs. Yes, there's information about their behavior and intelligence too, especially in the second half-hence three stars instead of two.

The dry, scientific tone often lacks immediacy and liveliness, and at several points I found myself counting the pages to the next chapter. There's a bit more humor and verve in the second half. And the book is well-researched.

But did we really need to know about a diving expedition during which the author saw not a single octopus? Did we really need to hear the author enthuse about her experience of dining on a fresh, still wriggling octopus tentacle-a practice and mode of preparation condemned by PETA?

In most of the book, Ms. Courage maintains a tone of aloof detachment that I found off-putting.

Truly Appalling

This book has so many problems it isn't even funny, well it kind of is, unless you paid for this or your tax dollars paid to put it in a library. Let's get started:

1. Chatty magazine-ish prose. Like a People magazine article on octopuses (yes, that is correct, there is no "i" in octopi). Words like "gazillion," "cool," and "bejesus" just don't belong in a natural science book. I cringe.

2. The first two chapters and half of the Introduction deals with, I kid you not, eating octopus. 60 pages including recipes. The first chapters! We are treated to both the details of the author's peregrinations to the various restaurants and then the gourmandizing itself. Complete with the live suckers sticking to her gums! Yeah! Good book so far.

3. Who is this book written for? Page 66: "The mouth is hidden away at the center of the eight arms. But be careful up there - it has a sharp beak and a scary toothed radula for drilling into hard shells. This chitin structure awkwardly positioned on the octopus's underside, at the center of all its appendages, almost evokes the strange myth of the vagina dentata. (But don't worry; because the female octopus accepts sperm from a male directly into her mantle, she keeps the chance for love bites to a minimum.)" Woo-who

4. Bad Science. Page 159. "A sucker's strength depends in part on how much volume it holds." Hmmm, volume of what? Presumably water. The murk becomes inkier. "Under water, that force is limited by the weakness of the water molecule itself." What? The suction force driven by a sucker is dependent on the "weakness" of the water molecules themselves.

'Once a sucker is stuck onto something, "if you reach the point where water capitates (sic) - where you're actually breaking apart the molecular structure of the water - so it is not holding itself together anymore, it will break" he says. So in theory,the octopus could generate more force of attachment if the water itself were stronger'

Where to start? Well the correct word would be cavitate not capitate. Cavitation creates suction by forcing a fluid to cavitate, form a lower pressure vapor by mechanical means instead of thermal means. Like when a propeller in a liquid turns fast enough to start cavitation, small unstable vapor bubbles are formed mechanically.

You are not at any point creating enough mechanical cavitation force to be "breaking apart the molecular structure of the water." There are forces between water molecules that are affected by cavitation, but the structures of the water molecules themselves never break apart. This would require truly tremendous mechanical forces no organic creature could manage.

Journalists should all be required to take at least one science course as an elective.

5. Plain absurdity: Page 97 Caption under a black & white photo that reads thus: "Woods Hole Octopus flashing its blue ring at me." I suppose we're to guess just exactly where this blue ring is on the b&w photo.

6. Dumbed down. The prior quote about vagina dentata excluded, this is written for a ten year olds reading level. It is just cringingly full of childish simile.

I'm not going to savage the author since this will get me flagged and it will serve no good purpose otherwise let it simply do to say Ms. Courage had great courage to attempt to write a science book that is clearly above her depth. (he, he, he)

Although Thomas’ metamorphosis into a man of action isn’t well explained, Lee’s novel offers a brilliant portrayal of the utter chaos of the final weeks of the Third Reich, the horrors of Nazism, the German people’s well-warranted fear of the brutality of the Russian onslaught, and the privations suffered by all Germans. Debut of a new author...very good book on the last days of Nazi Berlin

I’ve read a number of books about World War II, and more than a few of them have been suspense novels set in the Third Reich. This current entry is by an author who is new to me, anyway. His name is Gregory Lee; that’s a pen name used by the guy who edits Wired magazine. For some reason he can’t be himself when he writes suspense novels.
So the book starts interestingly, in 1934. Two half-brothers are always in conflict, one a Nazi and the other completely opposed to the Party. He’s the younger one, and both of them live with his father. As the book opens, the older Nazi brother has the father sent to a concentration camp, but his younger step-brother slips away with the key to his father’s safety deposit box, and vanishes.
Fast forward more than a decade, to the last days of World War II. The older brother is now an SS officer, and he’s been wounded on the Eastern Front. When he’s brought into a field hospital, 75 miles or so from Berlin, the doctor who is assigned to treat him is his long-lost half-brother, with a new name and identity. Things spin out of control from there, with the younger brother trying to escape the older, and the older pursuing stubbornly, from the hospital right on to Berlin.
The author does a very good job with the historical aspects of this story, at least as far as I could tell. He knows what a Panzerfaust is, what a Kubelwagen is, and so forth. He gets the SS ranks right, and can describe what a bombing raid feels, sounds, and looks like, as if he were there. His portrait of Berlin at the end of the war, with the bank manager trying to keep up standards as the world crumbles around him, and the civil servants trudge off to their jobs almost as the Soviet T-34s rumble down the city streets, is quite authentic in feel, and very well-done. The whole of the book felt like early Ken Follett, and frankly it was even a bit better at times. Highly recommended.

The Fate Of WWII Rests In The Hands Of Two Warring Brothers: Entertaining, If Far Fetched

Gregory Lee's "The Nero Decree" is an old fashioned entertainment that pits two brothers against one another in war torn Germany. One brother is portrayed as evil incarnate and one is a noble hero. I think Lee's intent was to showcase how the events leading to WWII could affect and divide families. The introduction presents how the two boys are on different paths. In just a few pages, though, one has committed an atrocity so heinous, it sets the other off on a brand new life to escape the horrors of his current predicament. Of course, this new world is certainly filled with unpleasantness as well as he serves at the pleasure of the Reich when the odds against Germany seem insurmountable. As escapism, "The Nero Decree" is a perfectly entertaining story that is easy enough to like. However, it doesn't play as particularly real and that sometimes detracted from my enjoyment of the scenario.

As the power of the Reich is ascending, brother Johann and his pacifist father are appalled by the changes they see coming. Half-brother Dieter, however, is embracing the regime. As the two boys diverge onto very different paths, Dieter rises to impressive rank. Johann, meanwhile, just wants to survive the war and be reunited with his family. Dieter has been haunted by a legacy his father left, and Johann is committed to the idea that he'll never see his brother again. As fate would have it, though, the two are reunited in a battlefield hospital. Not only does Johann have to face the sibling he loathes, he becomes embroiled in a plot whose repercussions are pretty astonishing. What's an ordinary guy to do? We'll never know because Johann transforms into something else entirely. Before long, Johann is perpetrating a series of incredibly noble acts with superhuman finesse. And this is where I started to disconnect with the story. It gets increasingly far fetched.

At its most successful, "The Nero Decree" does paint a harrowing portrait of a country devastated by destruction. The Decree itself is just a natural extension of what the attacks have already begun, but its senselessness is a final indignity to a once great city. I don't want to give too much away, but the novel presents itself as a race against time. As the Soviets and the Americans are pushing German lines back, the future of Berlin is in jeopardy. But this is secondary to the personal story being told. Dieter and Johann seemingly have the fate of the war in their hands! Even though a personal story propels them, their unquestionable significance to the truth of what has transpired is oftentimes overly convenient. A major revelation won't take very many by surprise in the final chapters and neither character veers off the predestined path they were set on. The book definitely would have benefited by giving Dieter a bit more moral shading! As an adventure, though, "The Nero Decree" is entertaining. I just saw the potential for it to be truly devastating and it never really digs deep enough. About 3 1/2 stars. KGHarris, 11/13.

Good book but Implausible

The author did a great job of setting the scene of a crumbling Berlin during WWII, and the threat of the Russian Army poised for invasion. I felt I was there, and could feel the interplay between the gestapo and the desperate citizens. The characters were well drawn and kept me engaged. The reason I only gave the book 3 stars was that if felt that the motivation of the protagonist was implausible for his actions...I just couldn't quite buy into his undertaking the risks that he did. I can't say more without revealing too much of the book. However, if you are looking for a good WWII story that puts you into the environment of those last few months of the Third Reich, I would definitely recommend this book.
