This counting book opens with 10 orange pumpkins on a farm. As the rhyming, rhythmic verses roll along, one pumpkin after another disappears, but observant children will be able to figure out what happens to each. In one double-page spread, a pickup truck carrying 6 pumpkins crosses a bridge in the evening. The verse reads, “Six orange pumpkins / out for a drive. / Watch out! There’s a bump ahead. / Splash! There are five.” A page turn after “bump ahead” depicts the same scene with water splashing up as a pumpkin lands in the water, awakening several alligators. The rhyming text works well enough, but the real drama comes in the simple, striking artwork. Savage uses line, color, form, and contrast beautifully. Throughout the book, the color of the sky changes, providing beautiful backdrops for the characters and objects silhouetted against it. Spooky but not truly scary, this reverse counting book makes a fun read-aloud choice for younger children looking forward to Halloween. Preschool-Grade 1. --Carolyn Phelan

Great for story time or learning to count.

Ten Orange Pumpkins is a beautiful book! If you are looking for a picture book for your young child that captures the spooky charm of Halloween, then this is an excellent choice. The author/illustrator uses bold colors and lines and deceptively simple illustrations to bring smiles and capture the attention of even the youngest story listener. The orange pumpkins always stand out vividly against the dark backdrops, and the artist's creative uses of shadows and night time colors give each two page spread a distinctive Halloween feel. We get to meet a scarecrow, mummy, ghost, witch, skeletal pirates, a spider, and finally a delightfully spooky black cat, looking at us with amused orange eyes. The simple designs ensure that nothing is too scary, but just the right amount of fun for those looking to feel a part of the Halloween season.
This book also functions very well as a counting book for those just learning to count to ten. We count down from 10 to 1, with each number prominently displayed. The pumpkins are always easy to identify and count since they are so bright! There is a nice story here as well, as our ten pumpkins disappear one by one. They are "poofed" by witches, dropped in the river, stolen by a mummy, and struck by lightning, just to name a few. The smooth read aloud flow, rhymes that are spot on, and bold illustrations all mark this as a perfect choice for story time when youngsters will enjoy these Halloween images even if they already know how to count! I can't wait to share this one with my story time audiences who will no doubt delight in seeing just how many ways a pumpkin can disappear.

Excellent toddler Halloween book

Excellent Halloween book especially with the 3 to 5 year olds; not too scary! The minimal text and bold simple orange and black illustrations give extra opportunity to expand the story on each page. The pumpkins left to count are well defined for little hands to count.

Kids everywhere love to read and to count. This fabulous book will get them counting to ten as well as get them into the Hallowe'en spirit. Simplicity is the key to this book's success. The bold, colourful, clean-line illustrations, done with silhouettes, and sporting traditional Hallowe'en colours, are simply spooktacular. Familiar characters who emerge to celebrate this special day are featured: ghosts, bats, witches, mummy's, scarecrows and more. Kids can follow the inquisitive black cat as he roams from page to page observing the disappearance of those big orange balls.
Pumpkins are going missing. The question is how? The fun is turning to the next page to see who the culprit is who is making them vanish (sometimes even into thin air.) A stack of pumpkins are visually (and intentionally) positioned so your little one can count them as they dwindle down from 10 to one. Poof! Gone!
Counting has never been so much fun and your child will enjoy the theme as it is not portrayed in a scary way but in such a way to make smiles and anticipation of that big night happen. Highly recommended to add to your Hallowe'en book collection.
