Very good book

First let me say I will not include spoilers, and secondly, I don't drink. I'm not going to comment on the bartending presented. Those were unimportant parts of the novel except bartending lends to flight, and the main character Justin did not like to stay in one place too long.
I thought this was an excellent novel, thriller. You could read this novel just as a thriller and have a good story. The characters are well developed and make sense to their situations. I wasn't confused and love the ending of the first chapter. What would I do? I don't have a clue so I had to keep reading. That is what made me download (Kindle First) addition. The storyline was also not predictable even to those of us who have done a lot of reading as I imagine reviewers do. There are twists and turns.
You can also read this novel on a deeper leave and that's what I liked most about this book. With Justin referencing "The Tibetan Book of the Dead" you can equate Justin's life journey to The Book of the Dead. The Book of the Dead isn't just a book giving guidance to the newly deceased but also advice for the newly dead who will be reborn. When things are viewed outside of the physical, everything takes on a new dimension and reality. You don't have to have read "The Tibetan Book" to appreciate "The Barkeep." This novel is about looking at things from many different angles but Justin was using or miss-using a system of thought to not look at things the way they really were.
I believe there are two premises: "Some stains are just too deep to clean (34%-sorry no real page numbers)" and "Ask not for whom the bells toll. They toll for thee and me." When something tragic happens some people isolate and feel they are the only ones affected, but this isn't true. I very much liked that almost everyone in this novel or at least the developed characters are all affected by something that happened six year previous. Perhaps community is how we truly not get over things but get through them and live to carry on the best we can regardless of what system of beliefs we adapt.
I also like some of the archaic words used. There are only a few of them and each you can ascertain the meaning from the context. I like when authors assume an intelligent readership.
As I stated, you can read this as a straight thriller and have a good read or you can look a little deeper and have a great read. I was surprised the author had published many other books. I'm not familiar with William Lashner's other works; however, I would definitely read other works by this author.

What happened? Didn't get it

The premise is that protagonist is a barkeep who left law school to live a minimalist life a la Tiben Book of the Dead after his mother was killed by his father and our hero testified against dad. What was the backstory? What was the evidence? No idea. Never revealed. But the entire story is about the bar keep reinvestigating the murder because a very sleazy guy comes into the bar to tell the barkeep that he in fact killed mom. Meanwhile dad has filed a motion for a new trial using a patent attorney and no credible evidence. Hey I didn't make this up. I'm just summarizing. Sounds ridiculous? It's even worse than that. So, dad's in prison and a sleazy guy comes around to confess. What would be your first hypothesis about where this guy came from? Oddly no one considered this incredibly obvious hypothesis so the stunning twist is . . . Duh! But meanwhile our hero's life is transformed. Characters come and go though they have nothing to do with the story. Killers are on the loose, including a mentally challenged murderer savant. People are killed for no reason. A tired and worn out prosecutor and an aging cop are thrown into the mix. And all kinds of relationships come and go, with uncomfortable Freudian overtones. What really happened? Why did dad kill mom and how? What about the Tibetan Book of the Dead? What did it all add up to? Nothing.

Okay, but would never recommend.

I wouldn't say this book was particularly well-written. I have a reasonable vocabulary, but it was almost as though the author wrote this with a thesaurus by his side and wanted it to be more than it was. As an easy read it may have been 3 stars for entertainment value and some witty banter, but as written it seemed to grasp at being something better, which it just wasn't. It felt as though the author was trying for something deep, perhaps insightful, but to me it didn't feel organized enough, developed enough and just generally not a fulfilling read. The ending was particularly bad, as though the author had bored with his own story and just wrapped it up.

This counting book opens with 10 orange pumpkins on a farm. As the rhyming, rhythmic verses roll along, one pumpkin after another disappears, but observant children will be able to figure out what happens to each. In one double-page spread, a pickup truck carrying 6 pumpkins crosses a bridge in the evening. The verse reads, “Six orange pumpkins / out for a drive. / Watch out! There’s a bump ahead. / Splash! There are five.” A page turn after “bump ahead” depicts the same scene with water splashing up as a pumpkin lands in the water, awakening several alligators. The rhyming text works well enough, but the real drama comes in the simple, striking artwork. Savage uses line, color, form, and contrast beautifully. Throughout the book, the color of the sky changes, providing beautiful backdrops for the characters and objects silhouetted against it. Spooky but not truly scary, this reverse counting book makes a fun read-aloud choice for younger children looking forward to Halloween. Preschool-Grade 1. --Carolyn Phelan

Great for story time or learning to count.

Ten Orange Pumpkins is a beautiful book! If you are looking for a picture book for your young child that captures the spooky charm of Halloween, then this is an excellent choice. The author/illustrator uses bold colors and lines and deceptively simple illustrations to bring smiles and capture the attention of even the youngest story listener. The orange pumpkins always stand out vividly against the dark backdrops, and the artist's creative uses of shadows and night time colors give each two page spread a distinctive Halloween feel. We get to meet a scarecrow, mummy, ghost, witch, skeletal pirates, a spider, and finally a delightfully spooky black cat, looking at us with amused orange eyes. The simple designs ensure that nothing is too scary, but just the right amount of fun for those looking to feel a part of the Halloween season.

This book also functions very well as a counting book for those just learning to count to ten. We count down from 10 to 1, with each number prominently displayed. The pumpkins are always easy to identify and count since they are so bright! There is a nice story here as well, as our ten pumpkins disappear one by one. They are "poofed" by witches, dropped in the river, stolen by a mummy, and struck by lightning, just to name a few. The smooth read aloud flow, rhymes that are spot on, and bold illustrations all mark this as a perfect choice for story time when youngsters will enjoy these Halloween images even if they already know how to count! I can't wait to share this one with my story time audiences who will no doubt delight in seeing just how many ways a pumpkin can disappear.

Excellent toddler Halloween book

Excellent Halloween book especially with the 3 to 5 year olds; not too scary! The minimal text and bold simple orange and black illustrations give extra opportunity to expand the story on each page. The pumpkins left to count are well defined for little hands to count.

Where did they go?

Kids everywhere love to read and to count. This fabulous book will get them counting to ten as well as get them into the Hallowe'en spirit. Simplicity is the key to this book's success. The bold, colourful, clean-line illustrations, done with silhouettes, and sporting traditional Hallowe'en colours, are simply spooktacular. Familiar characters who emerge to celebrate this special day are featured: ghosts, bats, witches, mummy's, scarecrows and more. Kids can follow the inquisitive black cat as he roams from page to page observing the disappearance of those big orange balls.

Pumpkins are going missing. The question is how? The fun is turning to the next page to see who the culprit is who is making them vanish (sometimes even into thin air.) A stack of pumpkins are visually (and intentionally) positioned so your little one can count them as they dwindle down from 10 to one. Poof! Gone!

Counting has never been so much fun and your child will enjoy the theme as it is not portrayed in a scary way but in such a way to make smiles and anticipation of that big night happen. Highly recommended to add to your Hallowe'en book collection.

the decision whether or not to use donor sperm can be a very tender and painful process. When reading this book

I had a REALLY hard time with this book. I may be wrong, but I got the feeling that the author who had a donor child, was a single mom by choice. It seemed to me that the book was written very much through that lens. Based on the reading I have done, the most common folks to seek donor sperm are single moms by choice, lesbian couples, and heterosexual couples. I have read that the children born in these different scenarios, will often have different tendencies regarding how interested they are in their donor. Typically, children born to single moms will have the most interest in their donor and children born to heterosexual couples (especially when they are close with their dad), will have the least interest in their donor. I have read accounts of teenagers and adults who are born into this last scenario, and their interest in their donor ranged from mild curiosity to indifference. However, in this book, nearly every donor child quoted, seem to have a passionate interest in meeting their sperm donor and was "thrilled" upon making contact with him. Perhaps, the donor children that contributed to this book were all from the Donor Sibling Registry. While I think the sibling registry is a valuable resource, I do not think that the feelings of the kids on the donor registry are representative of donor kids on the whole. By default, kids on the registry are going to have more interest in their donor connections.

I was also uncomfortable when the authors would start a sentence with "you need to". There are so many different types of families and situations and using a donor often has a lot of complexities. I do not find the "one-size-fits-all" approach to be helpful and I think it can even be hurtful.

I know from personal experience, that for men in heterosexual couples, the decision whether or not to use donor sperm can be a very tender and painful process. When reading this book, I wanted there to be way more sensitivity to how men in this position may feel, not to mention how a non-biological mom in a lesbian couple might feel. If a man was considering having a child through sperm donation, I think it could be painful for him to read this book and it may even, dissuade him from going that route. After all, a good father of a donor child gives decades of his blood sweat and tears to his child whereas the donor, in a matter of minutes, gives his sperm and gets paid for it. I could understand how a man might be discouraged at the prospect of giving their heart and soul to a child only to have them (based on the accounts in this book), grow up and be ultra focused on their donor. Fortunately, there are other books on this topic like "Helping the Stork "and "Relative Strangers " that give a much more balanced perspective. Finally a Positive, Honest and Informative book for Donor Families and those in the Donor Industry.

This book is full of the kind of information I wish I'd had while navigating the childhood of my donor conceived son. I don't think very many of us considered all of the issues and questions that would arise as our children got older. Even though my son is now 21 years old there were still many questions to be answered. After reading the book cover to cover I can honestly say that "Finding Our Families" provides answers to ALL of the questions our family has pondered over the years. It also includes helpful information about how and where to begin your search for your donor and/or a donor sibling. If for no other reason than to have access to any disease/genetic information that has come to light since the donor filled out his profile as a young and healthy college student. We registered with the DSR (Donor Sibling Registry) when it first began and my son has connected with one of his two donor sisters. Their relationship with each other has been a gift to both of them and they continue to text and/or talk daily even though they are in colleges on opposite coasts. One of the most important points that Wendy makes is that it's hypocritical for parents, who so strongly desired a biological connection to their child that they chose to use donor sperm/egg so the child would be biologically related to one of the parents, to expect that their child doesn't have the same desire and right to have that same biological connection with their donor or donor siblings. Although it has long been established that secrecy in adoptive families is emotionally devastating to the adopted child it hasn't been acknowledged or accepted (in the U.S.) that donor conceived children have the same issues. My hope is that everyone connected to the sperm/egg donor industry, including the donors, will read this book. Not only does it address the ethical issues involved in the industry but it also addresses the emotional issues that are likely to develop for the donor and the donor conceived children. It's time to acknowledge and address the fact that donor families don't always have the storybook endings that many in the fertility industry assure will be theirs once they finally have the baby they've longed for. It's also time that the rights of donor conceived children are given the same priority as those of adopted children. Their desire for a biological connection to their biological father/mother is no less than the same desire of adoptees. Not only do I have a copy of this book but my son and his donor sister (or as we refer to her...his sister) each have a copy of the book at their respective universities and both are planning to incorporate the info into a research paper next semester. I think it will be wonderful for others to be exposed not only to their open and positive attitudes towards their conception but also to the facts and info shared in "Finding Our Families." Thank you Wendy Kramer and Naomi Cahn for finally writing this helpful and honest book. Thank you for having the insight and courage to address all of the tough questions, concerns and curiosity surrounding donor families. It's been a long time coming and I know it's going to change many lives for the better.

A Comprehensive Guide with Lots of Heart

Finding Our Families is a must read for anyone in any part of a process related to donor insemination. Whether you've just opened the door to an idea about using donor sperm or your donor children are grown, this is a book for you. Comprehensive, thoughtful and full hearted, this book addresses the myriad of issues that can arise in donor families.

It is an inclusive, sensitive map to guide anyone touched by the joys and complexities of donor insemination. The authors pull from the amazing anecdotal work Kramer has done, as well as research she's spearheaded in this arena. Three cheers for this groundbreaking work and may it reach a professional audience, as well as the families they write about.

Good for first time moms

I have a four yr old son and I'm currently pregnant with twins. I felt as though some of the obstacles she listed are just as common with one baby. Your first baby turns your life upside down no matter if it's 1 or 2 she touches on this as though it's a "twin problem." Feeding, sleep training, exhaustion happen no matter what. She mostly said "this will happen" but gave no real suggestions or solutions. Example "sleep training" she suggested cry it out then said you could do it or not. To me she is only presenting one option take it or leave it. This is based more on her own experience rather than research and other mothers' experience. It may be helpful if this is your first baby experience but I really didn't find out anything new.

This was purchased as a gift for a friend who was a first time mom and having twins. I think the common theme is that the book is pretty informative and helpful for first time moms but once you've been there and done that you will ultimately have developed your own perspective towards motherhood and raising kids. So then the book will be a target of your criticism or some kinds of disagreements. But for someone who has no idea what to expect with two kids at the same time, this is a good outline/preview of how life will dramatically change and fun will double up. It gives you an idea in general on what to do on a daily basis for first few months/years.

About the Author

Kathleen M. Ortiz is an instructor in the physical education department at Boston University. She is also an instructor in the physical education department at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge. Ortiz was an adjunct professor for 10 years, teaching tumbling and gymnastics to future physical educators at William Paterson University in Wayne, New Jersey. She has coached athletes in gymnastics and cheerleading up to the Olympic level for more than 40 years and served as a gymnastics official in colleges for more than 30 years. Ortiz has been involved with the Special Olympics for more than 35 years. She has owned a gymnastics club and directed gymnastics programs, and she has been a head coach and written manuals for gymnastics clubs.

Ortiz received her bachelor of science degree in education from Ohio State University. She has been involved in many professional associations, such as USA Gymnastics and National Association of Women’s Gymnastics Judges. Ortiz served as the state education director in New Jersey for eight years and in Illinois for three years and is safety certified in gymnastics. She also served as the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) gymnastics rules interpreter from 2000 to 2011. Ortiz was president of the State Gymnastics Officials for five years.

About the Author
FELIX FRANCIS assisted with the research and writing of many of the Dick Francis novels and is the coauthor of Dead Heat, Silks, Even Money, and Crossfire, and the author of Gamble and Bloodline. He lives in England.

DICK FRANCIS was the author of more than forty acclaimed books. Among his numerous awards are three Edgar Awards for best mystery novel, the Crime Writers’ Association Diamond Dagger, and the Mystery Writers of America’s Grand Master Award. He died in February 2010.

I think Felix has finally hit his stride with his fathers books. This latest Sid Halley thriller was certainly up to par. I hated for the story to end.
One complaint I have had about his books is that the publisher prints an Americanized version. They change words like "flat" to "apartment" and other British terms to the American version. I find it rather annoying. For Refusal I ordered direct from Amazon.co.uk and found the telling of the story much more enjoyable and as the author intended it - in a British voice. Looks like I will begin ordering British authors from the Amazon UK site from now on.

Felix Has His Father's Touch

The only complaint I have about Refusal is that it came to an end. Working with his father all those years has given Felix Francis a level of skill and craftsmanship to be admired.
I suppose it's obvious that Francis books have a formula: A courageous hero, slow-building menace, a point where the hero decides to fight back, and a final terrifying confrontation with the villain. But formula or not, they are pure pleasure to read.
I certainly hope Felix is hard at work with the next novel.

An excellent Sid Halley story and edge-of-your-seat thriller!

Oh, it is just so good to be able to read a really excellent Sid Halley book again! This polished presentation of Sid's life and adventures six years after we left him in Under Orders journeys from a gentle re-introduction of my favorite ex-jockey to several spine-jarring plot twists and a villain so, well, villainous, it's almost impossible to comprehend. (Just TRY not getting emotionally involved in this one!) Several new characters in Sid's world are beautifully presented and I was pleased to find old favorites as well. A real bonus is that this thriller is extremely well crafted. The sentences, chapters, and plots simply wind effortlessly into one another to arrive ultimately at an ending that is both tremendously satisfying and a bit cliff-hangerish (leaving me hoping and longing for more time with Sid one day).

One of the most charming aspects of this story, as with all Francis books, is to be able to follow the main character's thoughts throughout; little random touches like an unexpected conversation with a psychiatrist or amusing observations of fellow passengers on a train are far from ordinary. And lovely slices of Sid's new life and the British racing scene are interspersed with surprises that will literally take your breath away. Frankly, I enjoyed BLOODLINE so much I wasn't sure if author Felix Francis could live up to my own anticipation for this new release, but he has indeed. If I were British I'd call this book smashing and brilliant. In fact, I think I'll call it that anyway. Why not? Felix Francis and Dick Francis fans should be delighted with REFUSAL.
