By developing theories of cooperation and escalation in territorial disputes, Fravel explains China's willingness to either compromise or use force. When faced with internal threats to regime security, especially ethnic rebellion, China has been willing to offer concessions in exchange for assistance that strengthens the state's control over its territory and people. By contrast, China has used force to halt or reverse decline in its bargaining power in disputes with its militarily most powerful neighbors or in disputes where it has controlled none of the land being contested. Information was interesting but....

The contents of the book were informative on issues and known problems within China. The analysis that was used at the end of each chapter was insightful. The book was purchased for graduate level course, I found myself bored with it. The author was very good in explaining details and continually drawing back to the same theories that were already introduced to reinforce his stance for the direction of China. Being already aware of deceptive practices that were once used extensively by the management of China I found some explanations lacking. The descriptions were not really touching all issues that may or may not have been present during that era similar to cherry picking of bits. It may not have had anything to do with the author, but another perspective on the events. With that said the book is easy to read and understand, the author goes into great detail to explain motivations and some agendas of the leadership. Over all it was ok, if the subject matter is your interest than this would likely be another look into the homeland to learn of the personal problems that China was inflicted with during past years.
