About the Author
Peggy Wolff Lewis lives with her husband Jack and their family in San Antonion, Texas. The couple has travelled extensively over the years. Many of the settings in Crossing Stars are drawn from memories of these trips. At age eighty, this is the author’s first novel.

SURPRISED BY SUCH ENTHUSIASTIC REVIEWS

I was surprised by the enthusiastic reviews. It compels me to go into more detail than I intended about why I don't recommend this book. I'll start by saying that if you seek a book with fully rounded characters and enjoy savoring the complexity of relationships, this debut novel may not be your 'cup of tea'. For example, in Crossing Stars, the two-dimensional father and son main characters are stuck in their roles of being petulant victims of circumstances and are given inordinate attention at the expense of more interesting female characters who are either killed off or given limited appearances. This is not satisfying. The book is a long uneven saga covering generations, where the epochs inhabited by characters change little with each generation. Disappointing, since I'm partial to the family saga genre (like Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café, The House of the Spirits, The Thorn Birds, to name a few evolving narratives populated with unforgettable characters).
Then there is the problem of a book having more than 500 pages. Most experienced writers would think twice about offering a volume of this size in the 21st century, unless, of course, you're a brilliant maverick like David Foster Wallace, who never gulped when he gave us Infinite Jest, with more than 900 pages. But Wallace knew he had to grab us immediately and he did. Unfortunately, Crossing Stars waits for more than 100 pages to begin the plot and the action. Yes, there are skillfully written sections and dialogue (e.g., Francisco outwitting Victor; Louisa's secret, etc.), but if plot is used as contrivance to hop from one country to another just to display a tourist's superficial viewpoint of people and cultures, it sets up distractions from the story. The book is too long and too ambitious for a first novel. If it had been written as two or three books, there might have been more focus and development of depth and dimension to the characters. We might have traveled through rich internal landscapes instead of a faded, predictable external world. We might have avoided superfluous name-brand droppings throughout, which distracts a reader and doesn't aid the story nor give it texture. Perhaps, we might have related to the characters and cared what happened to them.
I had to confess to my friend, who loaned me the book, that after enduring a large chunk of it, I had enough. (Yes, I did get to the end!) My fellow avid-reader understood and had moved to another book and suggested I pass Crossing Stars on. Clearly, the book was not our 'cup of tea'.

Peggy Wolff Lewis has written a saga of the trek of a family across three generations in the twentieth century, that, while telling a riveting story, presents a remarkable tableau of the beauty and art of western culture and life. Thank you Peggy!
