About the Author
Simon Doonan is the creative ambassador for Barneys New York and the author of several books, including Gay Men Don’t Get Fat, Wacky Chicks, and Beautiful People (published in the U.S. as Nasty), which became a BBC TV series. Originally from England, he worked on Savile Row, at Maxfield in Los Angeles, and with Diana Vreeland at The Costume Institute of The Metropolitan Museum of Art before becoming the creative director of Barneys New York, where he designed legendary window displays for more than twenty years. In 2009, he designed the holiday decorations for the Obama’s first White House Christmas. Formerly a columnist for The New York Observer, he is now a contributor to Slate.com, and has appeared on Gossip Girl, Iron Chef America, America’s Next Top Model, and elsewhere. Doonan lives in New York with his husband, Jonathan Adler.

The Laughing Gnome

Simon Doonan is a funny fashion insider who first made his mark with his wildly creative windows for Barney's haberdashery. In this breezily entertaining and often hilarious fashion memoir, a wide array of portraits are included. Of course, names are dropped all over the place: Karl Lagerfeld, Tom Ford, Diana Vreeland, John Galliano, Suzy Menkes, Alexander McQueen, Kate Moss and Anna Wintour. What makes this so fun is Simon Doonan's edgy and on point observations. I especially enjoyed his riffs on Karl Lagerfeld who has long been known for his cutting assessments.
The unusual title comes from the comparison of mental patients with those in the fashion set. It seems Simon Doonan has an ongoing competition with his friend in the psyche field. Who is nuttier: the inmates of the asylum or the flakes in the fashion industry? It's a tough call!
But not all is one happy party. At the heart of this is Simon's wistful remembrances of the many, many people in the fashion industry who died in their prime of their careers from the scourge of AIDS. It's fitting and quite touching that Mr. Doonan doesn't gloss over this very tragic chapter.
So for all you fashionistas or arty types looking for prose with a sharp and satirical edge, I heartily recommend "Asylum." It's a laugh out loud frolic with a gnomish gay man at your side.

As Run By The Inmates

I needn't have worried. My lack of knowledge, not to say interest, in the fashion world didn't matter one bit in this fast paced, clever, self effacing/aggrandizing collection of stories from the trenches. The very wackiness of fashion makes for a self defining bizarre cast of characters, and Doonan has met, admired, tangled with and/or insulted them all. It's a riotous trip through a world that sets its own rules. A world where not only do cranks, misfits and manic depressives fit in, but which caters to them as no other.
It begins with a delightful comparison: Doonan's world of fashion, versus his friend's world of the institutionalized insane. Which one is crazier? Doonan describes some new fashion, and his friend counters that she has patients who say, wear or espouse the same thing. They get locked away for it. Doonan's people redefine fashion with it. It ends in a clear decision - a tie.
It's onward and upward from there, as Simon Doonan proves to be a great storyteller. The very gayness of his style helps him get away with sarcasm, shots, stabs and otherwise unforgivable strings of adjectives and metaphors - that really move the narrative. You never know what's on the next page, let alone the next story. Fortunately, there are 25 of them, so you can take the medicine in doses as large or as small as your capacity to enjoy will handle.
The characters are all real, which adds to the fright factor. Only in fashion could these outliers, these certifiables, succeed and flourish. Doonan acknowledges it, (hell, he dotes on it) and gives his gratitude for it, in numerous places throughout. It makes for a rich environment that Damon Runyon would approve.
The namedropping is carpetbombing; it's everything you would expect of fashionista memoirs. There is a story for every larger than life character. And as acid as the stories might seem, they are also hugely affectionate. This is a lifetime love affair with a halfcrazed paramour.
At a few points, Doonan takes himself seriously, scoring points about various people, and what the industry is and is not accomplishing for society. And then he'll turn around and dismiss himself with "You have to admit, my sweeping generalizations are always so much more exciting than facts." So you have to just sit back, relax, and enjoy the flight.

Hilariously Wonderful

I loved this book (and all of Simon Doonan's books).
First, they are laugh-out-loud funny.
Second, I actually learn things -- not just about fashion, but Simon's creative references are so vast, I find myself making notes of movies to see, books to read, and countless other things to explore that he often mentions merely in passing. (See GAY MEN DON'T GET FAT for an extraordinary such list -- "The Gay Canon" in the chapter "The Bitter Tears of Jackie O"). Throughout each and every chapter of his works, I feel inspired to dive further into some off-hand reference he mentions.
Third, Simon is writing about fashion (mostly) and other parallel, ephemeral topics and yet his keen intelligence and his sweet, soulful disposition allows us a deeper journey into some very human topics, for example the over-arching ambition of the young. IE, there's more depth here than the cornucopia of wit and fashion-emphasis might immediately suggest.
Finally, the essay format is perfect -- one can dip in and out of essays at will or swallow the book in a whole sitting (as I did on a flight from JFK to Rome) -- but I realized that it works so well because each one is jam-packed with humor and charm and insight. [What I'm trying to say, is that you'll definitely have fun re-reading these essays for pleasure and picking up tidbits you might have missed the first time around.]
In short, a thoroughly delightful book for anyone who cares about fashion, culture, or even just takes pleasure in the observations of a truly witty yet good-natured person observing the follies of our times.
