Fifty upland highlights
By Steve Benner
I am not a great lover of the prescribed-walk type of mountain guidebook, much preferring instead to be provided with details of available routes, viewpoints, features, obstacles, etc, from which to assemble my own walk, depending upon weather, time of year, company, mood and inclination. In a book such as Terry Marsh's latest offering, "Great Mountain Days in The Pennines", which aims to present a selection of mountain walks based within an extensive swathe of northern English uplands stretching from Thack Moor above Penrith in the north, to Stanage Edge, overlooking the suburbs of Sheffield in the south, the author is presented with little choice but to follow the tried and trusted "50 best walks" approach.

The result is the inevitable "edited highlights" summary of the main walkers' honey pots within an area encompassing something upwards of 4,000 square miles and representing what is almost universally regarded as the best mountain walking in England outside the Lake District. That said, Terry Marsh does a good job within the confines of his brief. The walks are varied in length and grading whilst staying firmly within the category of "mountain" walks of the title. Between them, they give a good flavour of all of the variety that these uplands have to offer. The writing is both eminently readable and clear, making it both an excellent fire-side read for those darks winter evenings trapped indoors, as well as a good practical guide to routes on the ground. Terry Marsh is economical with his text, too, providing a good level of information without going on at length. It is copiously illustrated with the author's own (excellent) photographs and with OS 1:40,000 map reproductions, providing full route details. The book itself is a bit too bulky, heavy and glossy for most walkers to want to take it with them in the hills, so it will be necessary to do some additional planning work with your own maps, notebooks etc, before embarking on any of these walks, but that is no bad thing; each walk is graded, and accompanied by a handy summary of all of the information you need in addition to the route details, such as parking information, details of which maps to take with you, and the location of the nearest post-walk watering hole! It is a pity that all of the walks are heavily prescribed in their route -- I would have liked to see at least some routine suggestions for extending, shortening or varying the walks -- but I guess size considerations precluded this and one can't have everything.

For those wanting just an introduction to what mountain-top walking is on offer in each of the areas covered in the book - North Pennines, Eden Valley and Howgills, Yorkshire Dales, South Pennines, and Dark Peak -- the book is probably as good as you'll find. Those wanting to delve more into the real, hidden character of these northern uplands will need to progress to something a little meatier and more specialised. The book is nevertheless a worthy addition to the growing catalogue of walking books from Cumbrian publishers, Cicerone, generally, and from the pen (and camera) of Terry Marsh in particular.
