Designing Social Inquiry: Scientific Inference in Qualitative Research, by Gary King, Robert O. Keohane, Sidney Verba

While heated arguments between practitioners of qualitative and quantitative research have begun to test the very integrity of the social sciences, Gary King, Robert Keohane, and Sidney Verba have produced a farsighted and timely book that promises to sharpen and strengthen a wide range of research performed in this field. These leading scholars, each representing diverse academic traditions, have developed a unified approach to valid descriptive and causal inference in qualitative research, where numerical measurement is either impossible or undesirable. Their book demonstrates that the same logic of inference underlies both good quantitative and good qualitative research designs, and their approach applies equally to each.

Providing precepts intended to stimulate and discipline thought, the authors explore issues related to framing research questions, measuring the accuracy of data and uncertainty of empirical inferences, discovering causal effects, and generally improving qualitative research. Among the specific topics they address are interpretation and inference, comparative case studies, constructing causal theories, dependent and explanatory variables, the limits of random selection, selection bias, and errors in measurement. Mathematical notation is occasionally used to clarify concepts, but no prior knowledge of mathematics or statistics is assumed. The unified logic of inference that this book explicates will be enormously useful to qualitative researchers of all traditions and substantive fields.

KKV
By Kevin MacG Adams
KKV is the book behind the excellent paper by Gerardo L. Munck entitled Canons of Research Design in Qualitative Analysis [Studies in Comparative Literature, Vol. 33, No. 3 (Fall 1998), p. 18-45].

The book has the details although it is harder to read than Munck's excellent paper. This is a must read for all doing Qualitative Research.

This not a stats book
By Amazon Customer
This is a response to reviewers who think this is a stat book. This book is not meant to serve as a stats textbook (if you want one there are plenty of good ones written by statisticians and econometricians). This book is designed to serve as a guide to research design in social science in terms of developing a question, following systematic research procedures and measurement while using qualitative research methods. In that regard it does not do a great job as they are stuck up with applying simplistic statistical techniques (predominantly regression analysis)to qualitative methodology. As a result the work ends up appearing weak to both the statistically inclined (including myself) and those who use predominantly qualitative methods. Arguably the biggest problems with this work is in their treatment of constant dependent variable designs. This arises from their notion of a "causal effect" that is quite different from what qualitative researchers might see as causality. In statistical terms their notion is correct but when we move towards a qualitative interpretation of the same the concept becomes problematic primarily because it is difficult to discern the appropriate differentation between values of the dependent variable in qualitative work.

Nonetheless, this book should be treated on its own terms for attempting to synthesize quantiative and qualitative research methods. This book started a controversy that continues till this day and did a great job in forcing people to actually think more deeply about their research design and methods.

If you want to study statistics or econometrics forget this book (choose what you want to know about....regression analysis, time-series models, bayesian models....your choice). If you want to study qualitative research well read this book but then read Brady and Collier 2002 and George and Bennett 2004. George and Bennett's work is arguably the best book on research design I have ever read.

All the advantages and disadvantages of statistical reasoning applied to qualitative political science
By Arthur Digbee
This book takes the basic logic of statistical inference and applies it to qualitative research design in political science. As several reviewers note, it is not a book on statistics, nor indeed does it pretend to be. However, it extends the logic of statistical research design into nonquantitative research.

That much it does very well. By thinking about how to test hypotheses and how to increase variation in a qualitative research design, it has been very influential. Most important, it has sparked extensive criticism, modifying and delineating its claims.

The book has some amusing flaws. Most of the examples come from the authors' colleagues and graduate students at Harvard, which suggests either that good research is not done by people without that connection or that the authors don't read anything written by people who don't have an office down the hall. The two non-quantitative coauthors have both done extensive qualitative research that demonstrably violates the advice given here--both before and after this book. This is evidence that the advice is hard to follow, that they have not read the book, or that good scholars take other factors into consideration when designing research.

The last hypothesis is in fact the right one. There are many factors that go into good research design, and positivistic hypothesis testing provides only a few. Even many of the examples they give are less appropriate than appears at first glance, addressing evidence that goes well beyond what this book's advice would be.

In short, don't rely on this as a bible. Don't believe its claims that all good research must meet these standards. Still, it's a good handbook for what it seeks to accomplish.

Why Not Socialism?, by G. A. Cohen

Is socialism desirable? Is it even possible? In this concise book, one of the world's leading political philosophers presents with clarity and wit a compelling moral case for socialism and argues that the obstacles in its way are exaggerated.

There are times, G. A. Cohen notes, when we all behave like socialists. On a camping trip, for example, campers wouldn't dream of charging each other to use a soccer ball or for fish that they happened to catch. Campers do not give merely to get, but relate to each other in a spirit of equality and community. Would such socialist norms be desirable across society as a whole? Why not? Whole societies may differ from camping trips, but it is still attractive when people treat each other with the equal regard that such trips exhibit.

But, however desirable it may be, many claim that socialism is impossible. Cohen writes that the biggest obstacle to socialism isn't, as often argued, intractable human selfishness--it's rather the lack of obvious means to harness the human generosity that is there. Lacking those means, we rely on the market. But there are many ways of confining the sway of the market: there are desirable changes that can move us toward a socialist society in which, to quote Albert Einstein, humanity has "overcome and advanced beyond the predatory stage of human development."

Review
"Characteristically lucid, engaging and gently humorous. . . . Cohen says things that need to be said, often better than anyone else; and his last book is especially effective as an argument against the obstacles to socialism typically ascribed to human selfishness. His style of argument is very accessible, and it is certainly a more attractive mode of persuasion than dreary analyses of how capitalism actually works."--Ellen Meiksins Wood, London Review of Books

"Is socialism really such an alien way of organizing human society? In this stimulating essay titled Why Not Socialism? (just 92 pages long), the late Oxford philosopher G. A. Cohen invites us to think seriously about what socialism has to offer in comparison with capitalism."--Sanford G. Thatcher, Centre Daily Times

"Beautifully written. . . . In sublimely lucid fashion, Cohen draws up taxonomies of equality, offers ethical objection to capitalism . . . and distinguishes between two questions: is socialism desirable?; and, if desirable, is it feasible? . . . Tiny books are all the rage in publishing nowadays; this is one of the few that punches well above its weight."--Steven Poole, The Guardian

"[A] stimulating and thoughtfully argued advocacy of the better world that we need to fight for."--Andrew Stone, Socialist Review

"A quietly urgent book."--Owen Hatherley, Philosophers' Magazine

"Cohen brings his characteristic clarity to his final defence of socialism."--Tim Soutphommasane, The Australian

"No doubt the best forms of socialist organization will emerge, like everything else, after much trial and error. But a vast quantity of preliminary spadework is necessary to excavate the assumptions that keep us from even trying. With Why Not Socialism?, Cohen has turned over a few shovelfuls, bringing us a little nearer the end of the immemorial--but surely not everlasting--epoch of greed and fear."--George Scialabba, Commonweal

"[Here] we have a renowned scholar producing an accessible, concise work addressing a vital topic from a committed, progressive standpoint: would that more of today's academic star scholars would follow this example."--Frank Cunningham, Socialist Studies

"Why Not Socialism? is a lucid and accessible statement of some of Cohen's deepest preoccupations."--Alex Callinicos, Radical Philosophy

"However small the package . . . the problems that Cohen addresses in this slim volume are of enormous importance, and can be taken seriously by readers ranging from those with only a tangential interest in the field, to serious scholars of egalitarian and socialist thought."--Robert C. Robinson, Political Studies Review

From the Back Cover

"Why Not Socialism? very elegantly advances philosophical arguments that Cohen has famously developed over the past twenty years, and it does so in a manner that is completely accessible to nonphilosophers. The book brilliantly captures the essence of the socialist ethical complaint against market society. Why Not Socialism? is a very timely book."--Hillel Steiner, University of Manchester

"Cohen makes out the case for the moral attractiveness of socialism based on the rather homely example of a camping trip. The positive argument of his book is impressive, and there is a rather disarming combination of simplicity of presentation and example with a deep intellectual engagement with the issues. It is very clear that there is an analytically powerful mind at work here."--Jonathan Wolff, author of Why Read Marx Today?

Why Not Socialism?
If you are considering buying this book be sure to read the "" so that you know the size of what you are getting for your money: it is not just "concise," it is tiny, no more than about 10,000 words. As an alternative, you may want to check your library for an earlier version, which appeared in Democratic Equality: What Went Wrong?, edited by Edward Broadbent (2001).

If you are not already familiar with Cohen (or even if you are) you may want to view the obituary that appeared in the Guardian (August 10, 2009), which provides an excellent overview of his life and thought: [...]

In this little essay Cohen pursues a helpful allegory, that of a group on a camping trip, to probe reciprocity and exchange motivations and principles. He illustrates how three forms of the principle of equality plus the principle of community might apply to the campers' behavior. He advocates "communal reciprocity," a principle that involves giving or sharing not because of what one can get in return, but because the recipient needs what is given. Think of it as a counter-balance to the role of selfishness in the classic allegorical work on economic motivations, Mandeville's The Fable of the Bees.

Further details of Cohen's argument are ably summarized in the Gintis review, so I will not repeat them. I will say, though, that Gintis seems too harsh on Cohen on a couple of points. First, Cohen is more accepting of markets than Gintis suggests -- Cohen allows that markets perform a valuable information function and he rejects central planning for that reason (it is perhaps unfortunate that he uses the term "predation" to characterize market motivations). Second, Cohen likely would have agreed with most of what Gintis says about the heterogeneity of human motivations. Cohen was not one-sided: "Both selfish and generous propensities reside, after all, in (almost?) everyone," he wrote.

As Gintis stresses, one of the major problems Cohen is up against is that it is not clear how the conditions of a camping trip, where the participants generally are expected to follow his equality and community principles, can realistically be brought to scale for an entire society. Cohen himself recognizes that it may not be feasible. It is worth pointing out, however, that there are obviously already many societal mechanisms that tap people's communal motivations (charities, volunteer work, underpaid service corps, and so on) and that as Cohen infers, many of us (probably the majority) do not think they are such a bad thing.

The other major problem Cohen faces is that we expect our economy to be as productive (efficient) as possible, and while many may be willing to trade-off a bit of efficiency to gain equality or community, there are limits. Cohen was a political philosopher, not an economist, so he offers little to directly address that problem here (other than to reference John Roemer).

Short as it is, maybe even largely because it is so brief (no problem to finish it), Why Not Socialism? is worth reading. But if you buy it perhaps you will want to share it with others, thus applying both the community principle (if you expect nothing in return) and the principle of economic efficiency (reducing the cost per reader).

Read this and you will know why not
By Herbert Gintis
Gerald Allan Cohen was a Marxist political philosopher at All Souls College, Oxford. He was a curious combination of rigorous analytical thinker and yet supporter of virtually unsupportable Marxian doctrines, including an economically determinist version of historical materialism, and a view of human nature according to which Marx's 1875 Critique of the Gotha Program doctrine "From each according to his ability, to each according to his need." I never met Jerry (as he was called), although he had close intellectual exchanges with several of my closest colleagues, including John Roemer, Jon Elster, and Samuel Bowles. At the cost of being uncharitable to a keen intellect, I suspect that his studied ignorance of standard social and psychological theory, common among philosophers of the mid-Twentieth century, who did not want their judgments to depend on empirical facts, accounts for his ability to spout socially bizarre theories in a perfectly logical and reasonable manner.

This little book---and I do mean little, being about 3% to 10% as long as your usual academic offering---is Cohen's last word on the subject of socialism published before his death. Cohen shows no trace of the historical materialism he formerly, and brilliantly, espoused, and he does not believe that the modern economy is conducive to a socialist alternative. Rather, Cohen argues that markets are morally offensive institutions that most people would be happy to get rid of if they could figure out some alternative compatible with the standard of living we are accustomed to in advanced market societies. "The market" says Cohen, "is intrinsically repugnant...Every market, even a socialist market, is a system of predation." (pp. 78,82)

In place of the market, Cohen celebrates the caring and voluntary mutual aid that occurs in small groups of friends (he never mentions family), and believes this can be extended to a community of strangers as well. He calls this "communal reciprocity." (p. 39)

Cohen's distaste for markets is that market competition destroys community and undermines egalitarian principles. In place of our natural feelings for helping one another to the best of our ability, market competition fosters selfish greed and quashes human compassion. Cohen recognizes two guiding principles for socialism: an egalitarian principle and a community principle. He distinguishes three levels of egalitarianism. Bourgeois egalitarianism eliminates arbitrary social restrictions on occupying social positions (e.g., class, caste, or race). Left-liberal egalitarianism eliminates accidents of birth to institute equality of opportunity independent of social class or quality of family life. Radical, or socialist egalitarianism, which Cohen prefers, eliminates differences in natural ability. Inequality can still exist because of poor judgment or just luck. Much of such inequality would be corrected according to his principle of community solidarity, which requires a high degree of equality of outcome.

Cohen is far from optimistic about the feasibility of the sort of socialism he espouses. "There are two contrasting reasons," he argues, "why society-wide socialism might be thought infeasible...the limits of human nature and the limits of social technology." (pp. 54-55) Cohen concludes that there is no problem with human nature, since people are sufficiently generous under the appropriate conditions. He observes that "doctors, nurses, teachers and others do not...gauge what they do in their jobs according to the amount of money they're likely to get as a result." (p. 59) He argues that this is not because of some special properties of those who work in these professions, but rather because the culture of medicine and teaching are humanist rather than capitalist. There is no reason, he believes, why such culture could become a general characteristic of work in a socialist community.

Rather than lamenting the incompatibility of socialist community and human nature, Cohen faults our meager social technology; there is simply no known machinery for harnessing natural human generosity. He calls this an "insoluble organizational design problem." "In my view," he remarks, "the principal problem that faces the socialist ideal is that we do not know how to design the machinery that would make it run." (p. 55)

I think there are two problems with Cohen's argument. First, there is a reason why we lack the organizational institutions that harness human generosity, and it has to do with a side of human nature that Cohen does not recognize. There is a great deal of heterogeneity among people in the degree to which they privilege the personal, including self and family, over the social. Everyday observation, reinforced by a huge body of empirical evidence---see my book, Bounds of Reason (Princeton, 2009) for details---that unless there are safeguards against the free-rider tendencies of the selfish, the natural tendency for the majority to cooperate will be undermined, and cooperation will unravel. Moreover, the larger the group, the harder it is to identify and punish the free-riders, even though most people are willing to incur personal costs to do so. Markets work because they discipline firms, who then discipline workers, thus solving the free-rider problem. Moreover, markets discipline firms by forcing them to compete and therefore reveal to the public exactly what are the limits of the possible in satisfying consumer needs and using technology efficiently. The knowledge of production possibilities unleashed through market competition cannot be revealed in any other way that we know of.

A second problem with Cohen's argument is that his personal social values are not likely to be shared by more than a small fraction of citizens of advanced capitalist economies, and this is not because of the hegemony of "capitalist ideology," but rather because humans have goals that conflict with, and often are more salient than, egalitarianism and community values. For instance, family is virtually universally, in every successful society, more salient than community. In every known society, people favor kin over non-kin, and their commitment to strangers is far weaker than their commitment to family members. In advanced liberal democratic societies, the ties of family by no means eclipse the feeling people have for their compatriots and the members of their residential and work communities. But no analysis of the good society can avoid dealing with the relationship between our public and parochial motivations.

A second arena of moral disagreement is the importance of social equality as a goal of the good society. There is a certain fraction of the population that takes social equality extremely seriously, but a far larger fraction, I believe, places concerns with procedural justice far above those of equal outcomes. The idea that one's family should not be able to affect the social success of one's children conflicts deeply with the natural family orientation exhibited by humans in almost every social setting. The notion that people should not be allowed to benefit from their natural capacities is equally repugnant to the individualist values upon which contemporary democratic ideals and support for human rights are based.

Cohen celebrates one side of human capacities, the side that cherishes affiliation and group solidarity, but seems completely unaware of the equally important side in which individuals strive for excellence, seek victory through competition, and spurn the mass psychology of the crowd in order to innovate and create. The idea that competition, even market competition, is just predation does not ring true at all, even when there are serious material and social consequences for both winners and losers.

Why not more Socialism?
By Dubarnik
"Why Not Socialism?" presents a short, utopian argument that contains many interesting nuggets of truth. I agree with Cohen that greed and predation are the two critical attributes of a market economy, but I think Cohen generalizes too much. Globalization has given the world a capitalism that is beyond juridical checks and balances; reform and regulation are desperately needed. But I am not willing to say that the operation of small-town or regional capitalism, and the markets they respond to, is necessarily antithetical to the values of community and equality. Those of us who consider ourselves leftists must recognized that Socialism, national or international, is a pipe-dream. It's never going to happen and it shouldn't. But if I might expropriate Cohen's last sentence in the book, "I do not think the right conclusion is to give up" on moving certain key industries (health care and energy production/distribution are two that immediately come to mind) out of market-place capitalism and into non-market socialism. It is here that Cohen's arguments based on community and equality ring most true. It is this socialism that can happen and should. It is this that we socialists need to work towards.

Dateline Jerusalem: An Eyewitness Account of Prophecies Unfolding in the Middle East, by Chris Mitchell

History’s final chapter will be written in Jerusalem.

When an Iranian president thunders a murderous threat or an obscure Turkish drunkard has a dream in Mecca or a Jewish couple from Brooklyn lands at Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion airport, these events might seem disconnected. But they’re not. In Dateline Jerusalem, CBN News correspondent Chris Mitchell connects the dots and unveils Jerusalem as the epicenter and crossroads of the spiritual, political, and, yes, supernatural worlds.

For thousands of years, Jerusalem’s powerful draw has always transcended simple economics, military strategy, and religious affiliation.

In our own time, as the Arab Spring threatens to become an Islamic Winter, one commentator warns: “The Arab Spring doesn’t lead to democracy, it leads to Jerusalem.” Indeed, the fragile peace of Israel is in new peril as violent Islamic factions vie for control of surrounding nations. Yet Muslims are converting to Christianity in record numbers. Dateline Jerusalem untangles and chronicles all this through the riveting narrative of a Christian reporter in the upheaval of the modern Fertile Crescent.

We live in a world where we cannot afford to be ill informed. What happens in the strategic Middle East, Israel, and Jerusalem is critical. It matters to you. Today’s news might focus on Washington, New York, London, or Moscow, but history’s final chapter will be written in Jerusalem.

Chris Mitchell’s firsthand experiences and reporting uniquely qualify him to expound on and explain the major trends and developments sweeping the Middle East and affecting the world. Mitchell has served as the bureau chief for CBN News since August 2000.

A Chilling Firsthand Account of the History and Politics of the Mideast
By Nancy Famolari
Chris Mitchell lives in Israel and has been reporting on the conflicts between Israel and the Muslim Middle East for years. This makes him uniquely qualified to give a picture of the major political trends in the area. Although I had read about the desire by the Muslim extremists to eliminate Israel, gain control of the Middle East and ultimately the world, his accounts of the battles he's witnessed, and the interviews with leaders in Israel and scholars who have studied the Middle Eastern conflict made it very real and rather frightening.

Mitchel intertwines the historical and political analysis with a discussion of the Biblical prophecies and the relevant passages from the Muslim literature. The facts of the Jews return to Israel and the subsequent conflicts with the Muslim countries make it seem that the prophecies of Isiah, Ezekiel, and Jeremiah are coming true in out times. It's fascinating reading.

Reading this book, Christians may wonder what they can do to help. Mitchell answers this question by discussing the World Prayer Conference. We can all pray for the survival of Israel. It is commanded by the Bible and Mitchell makes a good case that with so many people praying, God must be listening.

I highly recommend this book. It is well written and gives an account of the Middle East problems that you will find hard to ignore.

I reviewed this book for the Thomas Nelson Booksneeze Program.

Read in Context
By Jacob Prahlow
In Dateline Jerusalem: An Eyewitness Account of Prophecies Unfolding in the Middle East, CBN New Jerusalem Bureau Chief Chris Mitchell recounts his interactions with Middle Eastern developments over the last decade, arguing that these historic events point toward the hastening prophetic fulfillment of the return of Jesus Christ. From the vantage point of a news correspondent able to travel into the region's "hot spots" during the Arab Spring, Yasser Arafat's funeral, and the 2006 Lebanon War, Mitchell recounts in vivid detail his exciting experiences throughout the Middle East. Examining people, places, and happens in locations ranging from Turkey and Iran to Egypt and Israel, Mitchell paints a picture of the prophetic centrality of Israel in the world's future, claiming that all of the recent events in the Middle East point to the immediacy of Christ's return.

As a personal account of some of the more interesting recent events from the perspective of an on-the-ground news correspondent, much of this book proved to be an interesting read. Hearing someone talk about where they were during the Arab Spring in Egypt and their harrowing escape from a hotel that was later attacked tends to catch one's attention. But despite the numerous events that Mitchell records, the book lacks a unified and clear argument. His thesis, that everything going on in the Middle East points towards Jerusalem, sounds plausible at first. But then the book does little more than provide scatted (and un-chronological) snapshots concerning events. We're told that these events point to eschatological prophetic fulfillment, but there is strikingly little Biblical, historical, or even metanarrative evidence given to back these claims.

Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives
I am always hesitate to read books concerning prophetic fulfillment in our modern world, generally for a few reasons. First of all, many of these books seem to presuppose that the prophetic books of the Christian Old Testament (and often the Apocalypse and Olivet Discourse in the New Testament) were written solely for the benefit of people living today. Second, many books dealing with prophetic fulfillment in today's world approach the Bible as a source book for piecing together a hidden message about when Jesus will return (Harold Camping or the Millerites, anyone?). Third, those writing these books on end-times prophecy tend to take a "Jesus-is-coming-soon-so-world-be-damned" approach to everything but talking about prophecy (or the book of Revelation, or Daniel, or... you get the idea). This books hints at each of these attitudes.

Now I want to be clear-- as a Christian I affirm that God has spoken through the prophets concerning future events, some of which are still to come, such as the return of Jesus. And I agree that we should try to understand the Bible, interpret prophecy when we are able, and make sense of the world around us. But I disagree with the eschatologically-driven and often-dispensational worldview that drives much of the discussion about prophecy, the end of the world, and the all-important centrality of Jerusalem in the current events of the world. Is Jerusalem important? Of course. Do we need to seek peace in the Middle East? Absolutely, provided we do so in a legitimate manner. But far too often when discussing prophecy, people like Mitchell seem to miss the forest for the trees. For example, Mitchell is perfectly comfortable saying that Iran is unstable in its thinking and acting because the Ayatollah thinks starting a war will bring back the Twelfth Imam. But just a few pages later, Mitchell advocates a plan of action concerning Israel that provokes Armageddon, after which Jesus will return!

Overall, I would suggest reading this book only within a larger context of considerations concerning prophecy and the contemporary Middle East. As a conversation partner with other perspectives, this book can be used to draw out important questions and assumptions when dialoguing about important issues. But as a 'stand-alone' guide to the role of Jerusalem in our contemporary culture and line of history, I find this work severely lacking, however interesting it may be.

World Events Center On Jerusalem
By Dane R. Swanson
This is a most book for those who want to know what is happening behind current events concerning the elections in Egypt and the Muslim threat. It is all centered on what God has prophesied long ago.
Mitchell, a reporter for CBN stationed in Jerusalem does a great job of pulling facts together in such a way that the reader is pulled in and educated.
There is a history behind what we see and read in our paper. Mitchell lives in Jerusalem and sees daily the working out of
events as pictured in the pages of Scripture. He does a great job of interpreting them for us.

97 percent of the fuel IS NOT used during launch!
By P. Srinivasan
Duh! Other than the most basic and unscientific claim that is made at the very start to help create a (needless) analogy, this book is just alright as a motivational book.

But to anyone who knows anything about solid rocket fuel, the rocket launch process, or even basic physics and chemistry, you would know that solid boosters, once ignited continue to burn at a constant rate for 60-90 seconds until they are burnt out and jettisoned. Then the liquid fuel kicks in, and continues to provide thrust.

This book is good for motivation, but a rocket-launch is not some "fast-track" process. In fact, it sometimes requires YEARS of planning, testing, data validation, and some good luck as well to get it right.

The same can be true for launching your business - surely you will want to spend some good quality time researching, developing your business ideas and contacts, and execute your plan with care and precision. Fail to double-check things in a rush to get things out in "90-days" and you're bound to make the same mistake the author did.

even artists can think big
By Lou M. Nelson
Even though Mr Duffy's book is aimed at entrepreneurs with big-money dreams, his concepts help individuals in the arts like myself, a writer, get our heads on straight about business--in his words, turning our passion into a thriving venture. Artists entrepreneuring? What a concept! Yet there's something very appealing about the idea that an artist can make it big. Mr Duffy gives you the tools; the rest is within you.

“Edward Viljoen is to meditation what water is to thirst. This marvelous book guides both the novice and the experienced through a series of steps that aids in quelling the cacophony of everyday life and allowing the inherent peacefulness of being to emerge in one's experience and expression of the beauty of life. Compassionate Exploration of Meditation
By clozzi
I used this book as a key component for a 10 week class I taught incorporating meditation and prayer. I have meditated for over 35 years myself and found Viljoen's approach encouraging, beautiful, wise and helpful. He encourages an open compassionate attitude toward oneself when undertaking the often daunting practice of meditation. I highly recommend this book to anyone seriously considering beginning or improving a meditation practice.

A Wonderful Teacher
By Daniel Celidore
Edward Viljoen's book, The Power of meditation is actually a primer on living a spiritual life. The book beautifully describes the author's quest to integrate meditation as a spiritual practice using the Bhagavad Gita as his primary guide. It is a personal narrative, one man's adventure story about his inner work. At the same time, it is also an easy to follow instruction guide to the practice of meditation. In it pages, the author describes very precisely how he found meditation techniques and meditative practices that fit his needs while at the same time acknowledging the evolutionary nature of a personal meditation practice. For him, it was and is, a process requiring an open mind.

The Power of Meditation recommends various things to try; ways to sit, how to prepare a meditation area even in shared spaces, how to keep a journal of meditative writing. It asks questions about attitude. What do you expect to gain from developing a meditation practice? Do you seek to tame the mind, or to make friends with it? There are even considerations of what to do if you get stuck.

In order to live a spiritual life, Dr Viljoen found it necessary to integrate other spiritual practices into his life and being, practices that compliment meditation. These other practices include service, study, contribution, acknowledgement, and prayer. They are described in the book.

The latter part of the book includes meditations on the author's expanded awareness of some of his most basic assumptions and how these have conditioned his life in the past. He notes that these assumptions and meanings can lose their power through the expanded awareness of the present offered by meditation. It is this kind of thinking and writing that makes The Power of Meditation a fine teaching. By focusing on his own process, and revealing what he has tried, the author offers himself up as a fellow traveler in the effort to live a spiritual life.

Wonderful!
By Charlotte L. Kells
I have meditated for thirty years, but Edward's book as brought new energy to my practice. He writes in a warm, conversational tone. I felt like I was having a personal conversation with him. He emphasizes there are no "shoulds" - the importance of being compassionate to ourselves and of "trying" and experimenting with new techniques. There are many wonderful, simple suggestions for deepening and enriching. . . It is a lovely book!

A Letter to Harvey Milk: Short Stories (Library of American Fiction), by Lesléa Newman

This poignant and humorous collection of stories offers a fresh perspective on current issues such as homosexuality and anti-Semitism and lends a unique voice to those experiencing growing pains and self-discovery. Newman’s readers accompany her quirky Jewish characters through all types of experiences from an initial lesbian sexual encounter to being sequestered in a college apartment after paranoid Holocaust flashbacks. In these stories characters anxiously discover their lesbian identities while beginning to understand, and finally to embrace, their Jewish heritage. The title story, "A Letter to Harvey Milk," was the second place finalist in the Raymond Carver Short Story Competition.

From Publishers Weekly
These nine stories focus on an array of Jewish and lesbian concerns with a refreshing candor and lack of self-consciousness. The opening piece, "The Gift," introduces a theme that runs throughout the collectionthe conflicts between religious and sexual identity. Here, a simple, straightforward narrative escorts Rachel from the age of five through her 29th year. She alternately questions and embraces the Jewish heritage thrust upon her; endures the sexual advances and Jewish American Princess jokes of a college boyfriend; discovers both her lesbianism and that "being a lesbian is lonely. . . . Being a Jew is lonely. Being alive is lonely." Although pain plays a part in this volume, many of the tales celebrate with warmth and good humor the courageous maintenance of Jewish tradition in radical relationships. The title story takes a different twist as an old man finds both healing and grief in a writing course, while his Jewish lesbian teacher sees in her student an acceptance that her parents have denied her. "Flashback," another startling variation, tells of a young woman's obsession with the Holocaust. The work's immediate and genuine poignancy is sometimes marred by Newman's insistence on sprinkling Yiddish terms and speech patterns throughout the dialogue. The otherwise contemporary characters confront both timely issues, like AIDS, and eternal ones, such as a lovers' quarrel or a mother-daughter misunderstanding. Newman wrote Good Enough to Eat.

Thanks to College Professor
By A Customer
I read this book as part of my women's studies class and want to thank my professor, Marlene Howell, for leading me and my classmates to this book several years ago. This book really opened my eyes to two worlds that I, as a boring, straight, Presbyterian girl, had always been fascinated by: Judaism and Lesbianism. Newman structures her book so that each of the stories represents one candle on the Hannakah menorah, revealing each woman's fears and issues as they come to terms with their sexuality, religious, and personal issues such as sexual abuse. There are reflections on the Holocaust and discrimination against Jews and homosexuals. While Newman helped me to reflect on my own sexuality, and to discover my own love for other women-without erotic details-you don't need to be bi, lesbian, or Jewish to take something away from this book.

A moving collection of stories
By Michael J. Mazza
"A Letter to Harvey Milk," by Leslea Newman, is a collection of 9 stories that explores what it means to be Jewish and lesbian in America. The book includes a glossary of the many Yiddish terms used in the stories.
Newman deals with a number of issues throughout the book: the AIDS crisis, President Reagan's controversial visit to Bitburg, the legacy of the Holocaust, religious chauvinism, "coming out" to parents, preservation of the Yiddish language, and more. Some of her issues seem a bit obvious and even forced, but overall she handles the material effectively.
I found the best story in the collection to be the title story; it's about the relationship between an elderly Jewish man and his writing teacher, a young Jewish lesbian. Also impressive is "The Gift," which consists of snapshots of a woman's life from age 5 to adulthood. "Something Shiny" tells the story of a woman's participation in a lesbian & gay march on Washington. Although much of the book has a dated feel, overall the collection is very moving, and Newman effectively uses touches of humor to offset the seriousness of much of her subject matter. For interesting companion texts, try "Rubyfruit Jungle," by Rita Mae Brown, and "Zami," by Audre Lorde.

Funny, Moving, Enjoyable
By John Matlock
This is a collection of stories that offer a fresh perspective on current issues of homosexuality and anti-Semitism. It lends a unique voice to those experiencing growing pains and self-discovery. In these stories characters anxiously discover their lesbian identities while beginning to understand, and finally to embrace, their Jewish heritage.

These nine stories add a dose of humor while confronting the issues of our time like AIDS, and issues that have been around for centuries like mother-daughter misunderstandings. Ms. Newman's characters are just a bit crazy but this helps to transfer the story from the pages to memory.
