Dateline Jerusalem: An Eyewitness Account of Prophecies Unfolding in the Middle East, by Chris Mitchell

History’s final chapter will be written in Jerusalem.

When an Iranian president thunders a murderous threat or an obscure Turkish drunkard has a dream in Mecca or a Jewish couple from Brooklyn lands at Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion airport, these events might seem disconnected. But they’re not. In Dateline Jerusalem, CBN News correspondent Chris Mitchell connects the dots and unveils Jerusalem as the epicenter and crossroads of the spiritual, political, and, yes, supernatural worlds.

For thousands of years, Jerusalem’s powerful draw has always transcended simple economics, military strategy, and religious affiliation.

In our own time, as the Arab Spring threatens to become an Islamic Winter, one commentator warns: “The Arab Spring doesn’t lead to democracy, it leads to Jerusalem.” Indeed, the fragile peace of Israel is in new peril as violent Islamic factions vie for control of surrounding nations. Yet Muslims are converting to Christianity in record numbers. Dateline Jerusalem untangles and chronicles all this through the riveting narrative of a Christian reporter in the upheaval of the modern Fertile Crescent.

We live in a world where we cannot afford to be ill informed. What happens in the strategic Middle East, Israel, and Jerusalem is critical. It matters to you. Today’s news might focus on Washington, New York, London, or Moscow, but history’s final chapter will be written in Jerusalem.

Chris Mitchell’s firsthand experiences and reporting uniquely qualify him to expound on and explain the major trends and developments sweeping the Middle East and affecting the world. Mitchell has served as the bureau chief for CBN News since August 2000.

A Chilling Firsthand Account of the History and Politics of the Mideast
By Nancy Famolari
Chris Mitchell lives in Israel and has been reporting on the conflicts between Israel and the Muslim Middle East for years. This makes him uniquely qualified to give a picture of the major political trends in the area. Although I had read about the desire by the Muslim extremists to eliminate Israel, gain control of the Middle East and ultimately the world, his accounts of the battles he's witnessed, and the interviews with leaders in Israel and scholars who have studied the Middle Eastern conflict made it very real and rather frightening.

Mitchel intertwines the historical and political analysis with a discussion of the Biblical prophecies and the relevant passages from the Muslim literature. The facts of the Jews return to Israel and the subsequent conflicts with the Muslim countries make it seem that the prophecies of Isiah, Ezekiel, and Jeremiah are coming true in out times. It's fascinating reading.

Reading this book, Christians may wonder what they can do to help. Mitchell answers this question by discussing the World Prayer Conference. We can all pray for the survival of Israel. It is commanded by the Bible and Mitchell makes a good case that with so many people praying, God must be listening.

I highly recommend this book. It is well written and gives an account of the Middle East problems that you will find hard to ignore.

I reviewed this book for the Thomas Nelson Booksneeze Program.

Read in Context
By Jacob Prahlow
In Dateline Jerusalem: An Eyewitness Account of Prophecies Unfolding in the Middle East, CBN New Jerusalem Bureau Chief Chris Mitchell recounts his interactions with Middle Eastern developments over the last decade, arguing that these historic events point toward the hastening prophetic fulfillment of the return of Jesus Christ. From the vantage point of a news correspondent able to travel into the region's "hot spots" during the Arab Spring, Yasser Arafat's funeral, and the 2006 Lebanon War, Mitchell recounts in vivid detail his exciting experiences throughout the Middle East. Examining people, places, and happens in locations ranging from Turkey and Iran to Egypt and Israel, Mitchell paints a picture of the prophetic centrality of Israel in the world's future, claiming that all of the recent events in the Middle East point to the immediacy of Christ's return.

As a personal account of some of the more interesting recent events from the perspective of an on-the-ground news correspondent, much of this book proved to be an interesting read. Hearing someone talk about where they were during the Arab Spring in Egypt and their harrowing escape from a hotel that was later attacked tends to catch one's attention. But despite the numerous events that Mitchell records, the book lacks a unified and clear argument. His thesis, that everything going on in the Middle East points towards Jerusalem, sounds plausible at first. But then the book does little more than provide scatted (and un-chronological) snapshots concerning events. We're told that these events point to eschatological prophetic fulfillment, but there is strikingly little Biblical, historical, or even metanarrative evidence given to back these claims.

Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives
I am always hesitate to read books concerning prophetic fulfillment in our modern world, generally for a few reasons. First of all, many of these books seem to presuppose that the prophetic books of the Christian Old Testament (and often the Apocalypse and Olivet Discourse in the New Testament) were written solely for the benefit of people living today. Second, many books dealing with prophetic fulfillment in today's world approach the Bible as a source book for piecing together a hidden message about when Jesus will return (Harold Camping or the Millerites, anyone?). Third, those writing these books on end-times prophecy tend to take a "Jesus-is-coming-soon-so-world-be-damned" approach to everything but talking about prophecy (or the book of Revelation, or Daniel, or... you get the idea). This books hints at each of these attitudes.

Now I want to be clear-- as a Christian I affirm that God has spoken through the prophets concerning future events, some of which are still to come, such as the return of Jesus. And I agree that we should try to understand the Bible, interpret prophecy when we are able, and make sense of the world around us. But I disagree with the eschatologically-driven and often-dispensational worldview that drives much of the discussion about prophecy, the end of the world, and the all-important centrality of Jerusalem in the current events of the world. Is Jerusalem important? Of course. Do we need to seek peace in the Middle East? Absolutely, provided we do so in a legitimate manner. But far too often when discussing prophecy, people like Mitchell seem to miss the forest for the trees. For example, Mitchell is perfectly comfortable saying that Iran is unstable in its thinking and acting because the Ayatollah thinks starting a war will bring back the Twelfth Imam. But just a few pages later, Mitchell advocates a plan of action concerning Israel that provokes Armageddon, after which Jesus will return!

Overall, I would suggest reading this book only within a larger context of considerations concerning prophecy and the contemporary Middle East. As a conversation partner with other perspectives, this book can be used to draw out important questions and assumptions when dialoguing about important issues. But as a 'stand-alone' guide to the role of Jerusalem in our contemporary culture and line of history, I find this work severely lacking, however interesting it may be.

World Events Center On Jerusalem
By Dane R. Swanson
This is a most book for those who want to know what is happening behind current events concerning the elections in Egypt and the Muslim threat. It is all centered on what God has prophesied long ago.
Mitchell, a reporter for CBN stationed in Jerusalem does a great job of pulling facts together in such a way that the reader is pulled in and educated.
There is a history behind what we see and read in our paper. Mitchell lives in Jerusalem and sees daily the working out of
events as pictured in the pages of Scripture. He does a great job of interpreting them for us.
