Finding a happy medium in life...
By Joanna M
Eighteen-year-old Anna Byler is painfully aware of never having been on a date. And as a young Amish woman, it's important that Anna begin looking for a husband with whom she can build a life in their Paradise, Pennsylvania community.
But the fact is, Anna's grandfather - who raised her after the deaths of her parents years ago - is the district's strict bishop. Just about every young man within miles is terrified of him. No matter how sweet and pretty Anna may be, there's simply no one willing to face up to Bishop Byler.
Then Jacob Hostetler moves to town. His family, which includes his parents Cora and John, and four younger siblings, has recently experienced a tragedy they just can't seem to get past. Jacob is desperate for a fresh start in Paradise, and almost immediately, the beautiful and sympathetic Anna attracts his attention. He's determined to win her love.
Yet as might be expected, Bishop Byler isn't impressed. As far as he's concerned, no young man is good enough for his granddaughter. Add a bad first impression, and the older man's mind is made up - Jacob Hostetler is forbidden to see Anna.
The young couple - and just about everyone else in their lives - feel otherwise. Together they strive to change Bishop Byler's mind about their relationship, hoping that if he relaxes about that, he may about other things as well.
As it is, the bishop's wife Marianne is keeping a huge secret - one that she's kept for decades now. Strangely enough, it's the new unlikely friendships that Marianne forms with Jacob's grieving mother Cora and with an ostracized Englisch woman named Lucy that Marianne begins to confront the underlying issues which led to her keeping secrets from her husband in the first place. And in turn, Cora and Lucy begin finding the strength to deal with their own pain as well.
Although this book is technically part of a series, it's not really necessary to have read the others prior to this. The only main character whose history was addressed previously is Lucy, and there's enough of a recap to get the general idea of what happened. Other characters, such as Sadie, Lillian, Katie Ann and Carley, make cameos, but the role they play in this book doesn't require a reader having full knowledge of their stories (although of course, those are good books as well and you totally should!)
I'm greatly looking forward to finding out what happens next in this intriguing series!

I thought this one would be a good Amish read and it was!
By Melanie
I don't read a lot of Amish fiction, as it is not one of my favorite genres, but every once in a while it's nice to take a break from my favorite genres and read a book that isn't my normal cup of tea. :) I haven't read any of Beth Wiseman's books before Plain Peace, but I've heard good things about her books, so I thought this one would be a good Amish read and it was!
I could definitely tell that this book was part of a series, as I could tell while reading that certain characters had to have had their own book/story. I didn't feel lost, just that I would have been more connected to certain characters had I read their stories. I still really liked the characters, though, and the story of forgiveness in Plain Peace.
I really liked all the layers to Plain Peace. The story wasn't just about Jacob and Anna and their romance, there were several subplots as well. Overall, I really liked this Amish novel. I recommend it to fans of Amish fiction.

More Daughters of the Promise
By Pamela A. Burke
Plain Peace is the sixth book in Beth Wiseman's Daughters of the Promise series. According to Marianne Byler, one of the main characters in this story, a daughter of the promise is "a woman who is on a spiritual journey and discovers new meanings to the the words faith, hope, and love." Those words -- along with forgiveness -- describe most of the themes found in Plain Peace.
In this book, Beth brings together characters from the earlier stories in this series, as well as some from her Land of Canaan series. Having read those earlier books adds some extra interest and understanding to the story, but the book should also work well as a stand-alone.
The characters in Plain Peace struggle with a variety of trials and problems as they try to live under the strict rule of the bishop. Amish and non-Amish alike work through complex relationships and look for resolutions to difficult situations. One of the most fun characters is Marianne, the bishop's wife, whose long-kept secrets provide quite a surprise for her friends and family, especially her no-nonsense husband.
Fans of good Amish fiction should enjoy Beth Wiseman's latest Amish work.
