Fourteen chilling tales from the pioneering women who created the domestic suspense genre

Murderous wives, deranged husbands, deceitful children, and vengeful friends. Few know these characters—and their creators—better than Sarah Weinman. One of today’s preeminent authorities on crime fiction, Weinman asks: Where would bestselling authors like Gillian Flynn, Sue Grafton, or Tana French be without the women writers who came before them?

In Troubled Daughters, Twisted Wives, Weinman brings together fourteen hair-raising tales by women who—from the 1940s through the mid-1970s—took a scalpel to contemporary society and sliced away to reveal its dark essence. Lovers of crime fiction from any era will welcome this deliciously dark tribute to a largely forgotten generation of women writers.

Review
“One of the most significant anthologies of crime fiction, ever . . . editor Sarah Weinman reclaims an important yet neglected arena of noir fiction. From first page to last . . . a uniformly excellent anthology with no weak links.”— Los Angeles Review of Books

“Crime connoisseur Sarah Weinman has thoughtfully selected a Whitman’s Sampler of wickedness.” – PW

“If you (like most people) are unfamiliar with the subgenre, you might be lured in by Patricia Highsmith’s and Shirley Jackson’s marquee names — but my favorite stories so far come from more obscure contributors.” — Judy Berman, Editor-in-Chief of Flavorwire

"Sarah Weinman knows everything about crime fiction, and in her amazing anthology, she introduces an array of brilliant female writers who know more than they should about the dark side of the human psyche. Each story features a woman who's "good and mad" in her own shocking way, and Troubled Daughters, Twisted Wives is an important and riveting read."—Lisa Scottoline, New York Times bestselling author of Don’t Go

“Troubled, twisted, and terrific. Where have these women been? Sarah Weinman's Troubled Daughters, Twisted Wives serves up stellar short stories, forgotten gems by some of the finest authors of their era.”—Hallie Ephron, author of the bestselling There Was an Old Woman

"A short unabashed fan letter for a first rate job. My compliments to Ms. Weinman. It was like opening gifts, one story to the next, from a very young Patricia Highsmith to Shirley Jackson in her prime. A rare and worthy collection of suspense pioneers.”—New York Times bestselling author Carol O'Connell

“At last, the anthology we have been waiting for: a veritable goldmine of spellbinding, psychologically rich tales. Masterfully curated by crime fiction expert Sarah Weinman, Troubled Daughters, Twisted Wives not only brings much-deserved attention to fourteen unjustly neglected, pioneering writers—it also changes the way we think about the history, and the future, of the suspense genre.”—Edgar Award-winning author Megan Abbott

"These thoughtfully selected and very readable crime stories give us an unusually revealing and subtle portrait of the curtailed real lives of women in the mid twentieth century and the fantasies that would free them."—Sheila Kohler, author of Becoming Jane Eyre

"In this book, Weinman has expertly curated near-forgotten works by some of the most gifted women crime writers of all time. These chilling, provocative stories prove just how harrowing domestic suspense can be and together provide an eye-opening perspective on the evolution of the psychological thriller. Troubled Daughters, Twisted Wives delivers page after page of pure, dark pleasure."—Koethi Zan, author of The Never List

Women Writers of Detective Fiction

Bought this for a university class. I think I'm going to read all the stories, not just the ones assigned!

Great Anthology (But read the introductions after the stories)
By David Afsharirad
Great collection by some of the finest mystery writers (and some of the most criminally over-looked) of the twentieth century. Or perhaps I shouldn't say "mystery." In these stories, tone is more important than plot.

Sarah Weinman has collected some real gems here. There wasn't a dud in the book; every story kept me turning pages with a rising sense of unease--just what I look for in a crime story!

One warning: I'd advise readers to skip the story introductions until after they have read the stories themselves. Each intro supplies a brief author bio and mentions other stories and novels readers might find enjoyable, which is great. However, when discussing the stories in the anthology, Weinman often gives away crucial details--sometimes even the twist at the end of a story. Further, some of the introductions are just plain wrong, as is the case with Vera Caspary's "Sugar and Spice."

Some spoiler-ish intros aside, this collection is a must-have for any fan of suspense fiction. Let's hope that these fine authors will once again be recognized for their genius.

An interesting time-capsule of U.S. mystery fiction
By J Thomas
As others have said, this collection of 14 stories is meant to shed light on a largely forgotten literary genre, so-called "domestic mysteries" - stories that draw their suspense from the uniquely strained and fraught interactions that occur within families. No gumshoes (a la Hammett), no feisty elderly detectives (a la Christie) - instead, Weinman's female authors gives us mentally disturbed nannies (Patricia Highsmith's "The Heroine"), desperate widows (Nedra Tyre's "A Nice Place to Stay"), and spoiled daughters (Shirley Jackson's "Louisa, Please Come Home"); women tormented by greed (Miriam Allen Deford's "Mortmain"), by jealousy (Vera Caspary's "Sugar and Spice"), and by Terrible Secrets (Barbara Callahan's "Lavender Lady"); competent women gone wrong (Helen Nielsen's "Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree"; Joyce Harrington's "The Purple Shroud"), competent women sacrificing themselves for their families (Elisabeth Sanxay Holding's "The Stranger in the Car"), and competent women forced to sacrifice their families (Charlotte Armstrong's "The Splintered Monday"); lucky women (Dorothy Hughes's "Everybody Needs a Mink"), devious spinsters (Celia Fremlin's "A Case of Maximum Need"), and creepy children (Dorothy Davis's "Lost Generation"; Margaret Millar's "The People Across the Canyon").

As others have noted in their reviews, Weinman's introductions to each story do achieve the dubious distinction of simultaneously adding little useful info about the authors while incorporating spoilers that manage to rob many of the stories of their surprise. I'm inclined to forgive her the former, because - unlike their male colleagues - many of these women lived their lives in domestic rather than public arenas, making it hard to ferret out revealing biographical detail. However, there's really no excuse for the spoilers. If it's not too late, you may wish to give these introductions a miss.

Some of the stories are more imaginative then others, some more suspenseful than others, but all are competently written and diverting in their "domestic" way. While they may not exude melodramatic pulpiness, they are nevertheless chilling, perhaps precisely because the crimes they describe are domestic, and therefore feel a little more "close to home" than most of us would prefer our crime fiction to be.

Excellent love story with a twist!
By Deena Peterson
"The Convenient Groom" is the second Nantucket novel by Denise Hunter, and it is her absolute best writing to date! I only wish I could have read this one straight through, but due to health stuff, I was forced to slow down.

As a result, I was able to savor every morsel. Sometimes, booky friends, we need to do this...slow down and savor. Trust me, it was SO worth it!

Kate Lawrence has made a national name for herself as Dr. Kate, relationship guru and debut author. Her book releases on the day of her much anticipated wedding to fiance Bryan, who's been kept under wraps to help build suspense.

Turns out, that wasn't such a bad idea when he calls a few hours before the big day begins to say, instead of "I do", that "I don't". The media will descend in mere hours! Where can Dr. Kate find a groom at this late hour, and should she even try? How can she save her career now?

Enter Lucas Wright, extraordinary carpenter and craftsman of all things wood, and her office space mate. He's willing to step in and be Kate's groom, to help save her career, to help her save face...

...and maybe to convince her to love him. Seems Luc has a secret...and it's a gorgeous one.

Now, none of this seems plausible on the surface. What were those two thinking? But how many spur of the moment decisions felt brilliant to you until you saw the end results, huh? I'm telling you, Denise makes this plot line sing, and it is a beautiful song.

I turned the last page and cried, "NOOOOOOOOO!! I want more!!!!!!!" And that is a VERY good thing! I adored this story, these characters, and Denise's talent shines in this follow up to "Surrender Bay" (not a sequel).

I'm giving "The Convenient Groom" six out of five bookmarks, with a spiral bound notebook as a charm (read the book and you'll get it!). Do NOT miss this inspiring, funny, heartwarming and engaging novel! You'll be so sorry if you do!!

Happy Reading!

Deena

A great read!
By Pam S.
I'm the type of reader that reads five chapters of a novel, reads the end, and then decides if it's worth reading the rest. I read THE CONVENIENT GROOM in one big gulp, staying up until 3 a.m. to finish it--and I didn't read the ending after five chapters, either!

What I appreciated were (1) the good character development; (2) a strong theme of unconditional love and acceptance--without being preachy or heavy-handed about it; (3) beautifully-crafted sentences (Denise Hunter is a GREAT WRITER); and (4) unexpected irony, which amused me. At the beginning of each chapter, Denise Hunter put quotes from FINDING MR. RIGHT-FOR-YOU, the self-help book authored by the main character, Kate Lawrence. Often these quotes were in direct conflict with the choices Kate was making (against her better judgment). This extra "touch" added to my understanding of how "out-of-control" the situation was for Dr. Kate. A great read: 5 stars.

A book with nothing really going for it...
By Amazon Customer
Ah, who doesn't love a good marriage of convenience romance book? I love this genre...marriage of convenience, arranged marriages, mail order brides. Something about two people who are thrown together having to make the best of their situation. It just makes me happy when it all ends so sweetly and happily. So I was very excited when I got this book! I couldn't wait to crack it open and check it out.

Kate Lawrence is a control freak of a marriage counselor on the verge of making it big. She's got a column, she's got a new book, and she's getting married to the man she loves...no, wait, she's not. Just a few hours before her wedding, her groom leaves her for another woman, and doesn't even have the guts to tell her in person. Kate's whole professional career is hanging on her wedding, and Kate needs to find a way to avoid the mess her cold-footed fiance caused. Overhearing the heart breaking conversation, carpenter Lucas Wright (get it, Mr. Wright? Way too trite and cheesy for me, and they play it up to the max in the book, so be prepared) steps in and offers to be her "Convenient Groom". So they strike up a bargain where they will be married for a year, Kate will work on his parents' marriage, and Lucas will try to win her heart...because he's been in love with her for years!!

I wanted to like this book SO MUCH. And it was okay, but lacking any realness to it. The characters never seem to really bond in the book. Kate is too caught up in the fact that the marriage is a sham to really give the relationship a try. And Lucas is too worried about scaring her away to make a move. I know there has to be something to keep these kids apart, or else what would be the point of the book? But by the time the climax of the book hits, and these two are torn apart, they hadn't really gotten together! They hadn't had a big connection (aside from a few kisses) and they hadn't really bonded together. They were like two people who had gone out on a date or two. Didn't leave me really rooting to get them back together other than the fact that I wanted the book to end.

This is a Christian Romance Novel, but the Christian aspects are very minimal. There's a little one liner prayer here and there, but other than that, nada. So if the Christian Romance genre is a little off putting to you, this would be a nice book to start with. BUT it doesn't help the fact that the book is boring! So I can't really recommend this book, other than to say to each his own, and maybe someone else will find something they like in it.

I received this book free from the publisher through the BookSneeze.com book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission's 16 CFR, Part 255.

A thrill ride
By Carson J. Flanders
CARVED IN DARKNESS starts with a bang and doesn't let up. Beaumont's thriller pulls no punches. Sabrina has problems, and her problems become the reader's problems from page one. The kind of character you root for, Sabrina is tough--maybe too tough for her own good. Her will to survive was honed fifteen years earlier when she was abducted and spent eighty-three days fighting to stay alive. Her life is screwed up, but she fought too hard at the hands of the assailant who'd left her for dead not to value what she has now--and to fight again.

You'll love the action and feel satisfied when it finally lets you breath.

Carved In Darkness - A thriller!
By Shirley
I read this book on my vacation...I was told it was a "thriller" which turned out to be an absolutely true statement. From the moment I started reading until the very last page, it was so exciting and spell binding I didn't want to put the book down. It featured a variety of characters artfully woven in and out of Sabrina's life, not knowing until the very end who the culprit was that kidnapped her as a teenager, tortured, raped and turned her into the bad-ass, yet loving character, friend, foe, determined person with one goal in mind. This book should be on the Top 10 list of books to read....one of those books that you don't want it to end, never a dull moment, ending all too quickly, I am looking forward to Beaumont's next novel. A talented writer who I believe will become a well-known artist in the very near future.

From the Back Cover
Pastors generally feel equipped to deal with biblical studies, theological questions, preaching responsibilities, and pastoral care. But when it comes to budgets, insurance, fire safety, and church management many find themselves at a loss. Often lay leaders within the congregation flounder with these tasks as well. Here, finally, is the ultimate reference guide for the practical management of the parish.

Originally created as a sourcebook for the authors' week-long course on church management and administration at the Claremont School of Theology, the manual in draft version has been field-tested by hundreds of pastors and lay leaders. Not simply a theoretical resource, the Manual provides suggestions for almost every aspect of parish administration: position descriptions, various financial forms, materials for stewardship and Christian education, building use and safety issues, employee record keeping, and much more. Whether pastors are just out of seminary or well-seasoned in parish life, the Manual is full of excellent guidelines, tools, and forms for improving the management of the parish.

Otto F. Crumroy, Jr., serves as an independent financial management consultant to churches and teaches church administration and finance. He served as director of a 65-member audit group for the Army and Air Force Exchange service, a $10 billion retailed.

Stan Kukawka is president of a management consulting company and has 25 years of management experience with two world-renowned electronics companies.

Dr. Frank M. Witman is a United Methodist pastor. In his last two pastorates, he was involved in the building of new sanctuaries and the raising of more than $2.5 million for debt elimination.

A great resource, with helpful sample forms and good advice.
By A Customer
A huge timesaver for anyone involved in church administration, either as an ordained leader, member of a church's board/vestry, or church secretary/administrator. This book is accessable and clear, full of practical advice and very useful forms and policy "boilerplate." These forms save a lot of time and trouble, because you don't have to re-invent the wheel whenever you need a hiring policy or a church facility use agreement form. In addition, this work has a visible spiritual and scriptural core.
While this book was largely written by Methodists, as an Episcopalian I've found it very easy to adapt to my own church polity. It is used by my vestry and my seminary! I would definitely recommend that your church own a copy.

An Essential Tool for Lay Leaders
By A Customer
An amazing resource for every congregation! As a senior minister of a growing congregation, my challenge is to use the time and talents of lay leaders effectively. When our growing staff required better personnel procedures and records, Church Administration made it possible for a brand new committee chair to quickly understand what was needed and put a system into place. Why re-invent the wheel when this book by church management experts offers exactly what you need to get the job done. We've saved weeks of committee work--and had more time for ministry. Every church board needs a copy of this book.

Great resource book for the church office
By Christy
Every church secretary/office manager should have this book. You can spend a lot of time comiling all this information yourself, but as most secretaries know...time is a very precious commodity and there never seems to be enough of it. This book is definately a time saver because it has resources, help and information for just about everything you encounter in church administration. It is well worth the investment.

Review

"Build your orienteering skills quickly using Ferguson and Turbyfill’s system, which is sequential, logical, and thorough. Using Discovering Orienteering: Skills, Techniques, and Activities, you’ll be ready to head off trail in a matter of days with confidence and enthusiasm."

Mary Jo Childs-- Author, Coaching Orienteering, U.S. Orienteering Team Member, 1989 World Orienteering Championships

"I have taught the National Park Service's Basic Search and Rescue course with Chuck Ferguson. I highly recommend Discovering Orienteering for improving land navigation skills, whether you are in search and rescue or the military; or you are a park ranger, hiker, or bird watcher; or you just love the outdoors and want to get into the middle of it."

Dan Pontbriand-- Retired Chief Park Ranger and Former Chief of Emergency Services, National Park Service

"Using these precepts, Coach Ferguson had our team of inexperienced orienteers soaring in an international NATO military competition in Denmark, capturing a long-sought-after first-place novice win. I have long used these skills and techniques in teaching Navy SEALs, so I endorse them fully."

Grant Staats-- Commander, Navy SEALs and U.S. Navy Reserve, Team Captain, U.S. CIOR Team

"This book provides a great baseline for anyone learning how to navigate and is an excellent complement to current military instruction. Using direct language and often hilarious anecdotes, Chuck has pared down land navigation to its essence, making an outstanding supplement for both beginning students and seasoned operators."

Christopher Nelson-- Captain, U.S. Marine Corps, Land Navigation Instructor, The Basic School

About the Author

Founded in 1971, Orienteering USA is a volunteer-run organization dedicated to promoting orienteering as a viable and attractive recreation choice for outdoor enthusiasts; increasing awareness of orienteering as a tool for education, personal development, and environmental awareness; and improving the competitive performance of U.S. orienteering athletes to world-class levels.

Charles Ferguson, PhD, served as president of the United States Orienteering Federation (USOF) from 1999 to 2007. A former colonel in the Air Force Reserve, he became the initial vice president of academic affairs at Marine Corps University at Quantico Marine Base, Virginia, until retiring.

A member of the U.S. CIOR team and an expert orienteer, Colonel Ferguson represented the United States as a competitor in eight competitions. In 1977, he led his team to the first U.S. win in the over-35 (veteran) category in the CIOR military competitions in the United Kingdom. His team again won the over-35 category in 1982 in the United States.

Colonel Ferguson later served as orienteering coach for the U.S. CIOR team for 2 years and with his wife, Linda, as orienteering coach for the Canadian CIOR team for 3 years. Canadian teams finished 11th in orienteering their first year, in the top 10 the next year, and in first place their third year. He also served for 13 years on the NATO CIOR competition commission, leading the rewriting of the orienteering rules of the competition. At the summer military competitions, he was elected to the CIOR orienteering technical jury for 5 years, serving as chair for 3.

Along with Coach Turbyfill, he teaches the beginning orienteering course, Zero to Orange in Three Days, and he holds OUSA Olympic level I and level II orienteering coaching certificates. A frequent orienteering competitor in the United States, he placed second in his age group in the 2007 U.S. individual championships.

Dr. Ferguson currently serves in USOF as a director of the OUSA Endowment Fund (EF) and EF liaison to the OUSA board of directors. He is also a member of the executive board of the Adventuresports Institute.

LTC Robert Turbyfill works as an analyst for the Department of Homeland Security in Washington, DC. He has served as a United States Marine officer for 11 years and as an Army National Guard officer for 14 years.

He is a former all-Marine, interservice, United States, and North American orienteering champion. He has represented the United States 11 times at world-class competition (8 times as a competitor and 3 times as the coach of the U.S. orienteering team).

A graduate and faculty member of the Marine Corps Physical Fitness Academy, he coached the 1977 and 1978 CIOR navigation event. The U.S. CIOR team won that event for the first time in CIOR history.

In Army ROTC he has coached the Brigham Young University (BYU) ranger challenge team for four seasons to national titles. His record was third, first, third, and first in the nation by comparative score at the Fourth Army ROTC Region at Fort Louis, Washington.

As a team consultant, he is coaching and teaching orienteering to the USMA orienteering club cadets at West Point. He is the current coaching certifier for Orienteering USA. He teaches a college-level orienteering course and an Olympic level 1 coaching course at West Point in conjunction with the Adventuresports Institute at Garrett College in western Maryland. He has developed navigation certification standards approved by the OUSA board of directors in November of 2006.

Outstanding Book
By Sea Salt
This book has an excellent format and teaches techniques that are easily to apply. After may years of navigating slowly, using dead reckoning learned from the military, I could not grasp that navigation with a map and compass could be faster than a GPS. Now I understand and am a believer. I credit my increase in speed to a better understanding of the map and how to utilize it along with principles taught in the book to plan my route.

Very nice, but illustrations in kindle version are of substandard quality
By Anton Sharobayko
The book itself is great - lots of practical tips. I've been doing orienteering for several years, but still I've learned much from this book. The only significant drawback in my opinion is the low quality of illustrations in kindle edition. They are of extremely low resolution and nothing could be discerned on most of them =( I've reported this to Amazon, but there was no update/fix.

Comprensive and superbly written
By Para Italy
This 200-page well-written and nicely illustrated monograph on orienteering skills and techniques belongs on the library shelf of every person interested in the sport. Authors Charles "Chuck" Ferguson and Robert "Bob" Turbyfill have more than 50 years combined experience in the sport and consequently share a wealth of practical tips and ideas on orienteering. While the book's intent is to cover the basics (hence the title, "Discovering Orienteering"), Ferguson and Turbyfill also provide skills, techniques and processes for the more advanced orienteering participant. Well worth the price.

National bestselling author E. E. Knight revisits the Vampire Earth to tell a tale about David Valentine’s fellow freedom fighter Ahn-Kha....

Captured and sold to the Kurian-allied Maynes Conglomerate to work as a slave in the coal mines of Appalachia, Ahn-Kha is angered and appalled by the dangerous working conditions and the brutal treatment inflicted upon his fellow miners.

When a protest against shortages is deliberately and bloodily suppressed, Ahn-Kha sets himself against the ruling Maynes family and sets out on a trail of vengeance through the Coal Country.

The people of the Coal Country now have a leader—a powerful and battle-hardened leader determined to forge them into an army that will wage guerrilla warfare against the Maynes family and their Kurian masters—and free the Appalachians from their tyranny....

The Curtain Rises

I gave myself up for dead when the bullets ripped out the back of our fleeing four- wheel

drive. They cut through the back panel, glass, and my flesh with the ease you’d expect of steel-jacketed high-velocity rounds.

I would draw my last breath on the traditional human holiday of Halloween, having seen forty-two years. The Kentucky soil of the Ohio Basin would absorb my blood, and I would join my mate, our children, and the ancestors after a brief period of suffering.

I have been told to begin this account in medias res. Were it up to me, I would open this memoir with a brief account of my background as a Xeno, a species foreign to this earth, yet born here nevertheless, and, as I noted, the first of my family born on our new homeworld. I would name myself the son of a people lied into war and rewarded for their losses with poisoned land and broken treaties.

I’m told I came into life in the year 2031 in the normal manner for a Golden One, letting out healthy yapping cries and covered in fine, translucent hair, born in the house of my father and uncles on the banks of the Missouri River, the old state designation of Nebraska. A prophecy of the stains of my birth said I would make my mark among men in strange lands. Some account of my early years as a trader and then later as a speaker for my people would explain my ability with English, the most common tongue of the humans of my region. My rise into the Golden Ones’ councils at a young age might give you some reason to accept the facility of my senses and judgment.

My scars in the war against the Kurian Order remain for all to see, even if they are faded and camouflaged by an old Grog’s sags and wrinkles. The lies endured, the losses suffered by my people, including the murder of my beloved and our family, would explain my affiliation with our common cause, when this extraordinary world’s even more extraordinary people rose and rid us of those who treated us as livestock.

We think, though I have reason to wonder. But that takes me beyond this narrative.

I would speak briefly of my meeting David Valentine, a man I am proud to call my seshance,* who found me wounded and revived me in body and spirit. I would conclude that sketch with a mention that our endeavors are chronicled elsewhere with the usual mild omissions and exaggerations that inevitably cloud reality when a biographer is asked to weave, telling the colorful oft-told tales and disclosing the sometimes-disappointing truth.

Without those particulars of my life, how is the reader to judge the value of this reminiscence? It would be like weighing the goose by extrapolation from a single feather.

But my publisher has requested that I begin with the night of the* friend-as-important- as-family wild flight across the Ohio River and into Kentucky, on Halloween night.

There were seven of us in that big black high-riding utility vehicle that crashed through the bridge barrier, fleeing like Eliza across the Ohio with a far worse master than Simon Legree behind, though southbound rather than north. We had escaped a no-longer- secret installation of the Kurian Order called Xanadu with a pregnant woman, a patient there who had once been married to my David’s friend William Post. I was rearmost, filling the back of the truck, squatting uncomfortably on some tools, tow chains, and a spare battery.

A bag of groceries hastily thrown in as provision had spilled, so there were apples rolling back and forth on the floor as we took hard turns.

Our intention was to race into the Kentucky hills and lose ourselves among the legworm ranchers there. Kentucky was a wild land, thinly held by the Kurian Overlords even then, and the legworm ranchers enjoyed a measure of independence required by the needs of their voracious herds.

A spray of bullets from the surprised sentries ended that hope, at least for me. Three bullets and a piece of what I believe was glass struck me across the abdomen and neck. Worse, the pursuit started almost instantly, suggestive of expectation on our enemy’s part. I suspected I would not last much longer in the chase, so I volunteered to take the wheel and lead the pursuit away from the others.

With an approaching column of Ohio vehicles filled with soldiers, I did not mention my injuries or the inevitable outcome of the chase. It was the sort of moment that would take an entire night to say what needed to be said.

We had to act while the pursuers were still far enough away not to notice a ruse, so at a thickly covered hillside I took the wheel from my David. My David has never had much confidence behind the wheel of such machines—to this day he is an atrocious driver even if one allows for his bad eye. Though one of our party was a doctor and saw to it that my injuries would not immediately bleed me out, I would only slow them on a foot pursuit. Everyone saw the necessity of the action, and we parted with regret and brevity, though David took some convincing. Our farewells are not something I can remember without much emotion, and I will not slow this narrative with sentiments recorded elsewhere.*

Before squeezing behind the wheel, I took the precaution of putting some of the chains and locks and hitches in the forward passenger seat.

Determined to lead the Ohio forces on as merry a chase as possible so that my friends might escape safely, I pulled away. I avoided looking back at the trees where my friend of many years disappeared with his party, not unmoved by emotion or unwetted by tears.

I drove perhaps two more miles and then stopped at the other side of a tangled a crossroads ruin long enough to smash the taillights of the “Lincoln” (an odd moniker for so vast a vehicle, considering the former president’s narrow frame and thin features).

The act was harder than you might think. Despite the bullet holes, the well-preserved vintage Lincoln was a beautiful piece of machinery. It offered an almost supernaturally smooth ride, yet transmitted a good feel up to the driver for what the tires were doing; it was also responsive, quick to accelerate or break. The on-board computer system automatically worked the power to the wheels and brakes in turns, making it more difficult to roll. You can literally say of such machines: they don’t make ’em like they used to. The superb machine’s performance was buying precious extra time for the escape of my friends, and I was grateful for it.

I failed to destroy one brake light, however, and I believe that proved to be my undoing. Or perhaps there was some kind of tracking device on the vehicle. Though I drove as fast as I dared, not using the vehicle’s forward floodlights, I saw my pursuers closing, a remorseless snake of vehicles following the hare-trail

I was tearing through the overgrown Kentucky highway, grasses, shrubs,

and bits of branch clinging to my vehicle’s grille and mirrors as though fighting to keep me from further destruction of the road’s plant life.

My pursuers had large, high-clearance vehicles and, it seemed, a

better knowledge of the terrain. Twice I had hopes that I’d lost them, only to see them coming at me from my quarter via a shortcut through the hills only they knew existed.

Only one gambit remained, it seemed; the one I had planned for when I placed the chains beside me. Most humans have a tendency to fill in blanks in their education with a set of less-reliable associations born of their own experiences and prejudices. Because we are larger than even the biggest men, until recently alien to their world, hairy, big-eared and sharp-toothed

in a manner similar to the Gray Grogs, most humans will assume my intelligence and understanding operate at the more rudimentary level of my distant relations, though we are as dissimilar in our mental abilities as man is to the chimpanzee. This category error has worked to my advantage before.

I drove a few more minutes until I saw my opportunity. A downed limb partially blocked the road bordered now on either side by forest. I swerved around the heavy limb and aimed the big four-wheel at a thick trunk. Though I braced myself for the impact, I can still feel the collision in my neck when I remember that night.

In my remaining moments I wound the chains around my seat and, with some fumbling, locked and hitched them behind me. Long arms and a dexterous set of feet have their advantages.

My pursuers deployed their vehicles as well as the trees and overgrown roadside allowed, using their doors as shields and rests for their weapons.

They shouted at me to show my hands out the window. Instead, I pounded on the still- functioning horn until they fanned out to one side to approach, boots crunching the fall leaves, carbines and shotguns held to their shoulders.

Of the possibilities for my immediate future, none looked particularly promising. A straightforward execution in the form of a bullet to some quarter of my head seemed the most likely, especially when they saw my wounds. I could meet death calmly, perhaps welcome it. Ever since the loss of my beloved, I have waited for death’s misted portal to open, sometimes taking chances that might hasten it, for after a soul-purging tour of the hells I’ve missed in this life, I’m sure my soul would be judged worthy of ascension. And there, she would be waiting. We would set teeth to ear as we had at our pairing and never be parted again. I’ve kept the honor of my father’s name and labored for the betterment of my people and, I suspect, even made a difference in a human life or two. I’m confident that’s worth something when my acts are calculated and will avoid the humiliation of a reincarnation. At least I hope so.

The pain of my wounds waxed. Our vet had been fairly certain that my vitals were untouched, but that didn’t stop the throbbing, warming sensation rapidly escalating into a burn. Enough pain, and you become resigned to your fate; your one hope is that it is over with quickly. I wasn’t there yet, but I feared I soon would be.

An early death would be a kindness. My beloved hates to be kept waiting. Nothing in this patch of Kentucky woods would mark my death, save for a scar the roadside tree would bear for the rest of its life. Maybe someday my David would piece it together; I could rely on him to place a small memorial.

“I told you it was riding higher,” were the first words I heard through something other than an amplifying speaker.

“That’s a Grog,” another said.

I hit the horn again and offered blubbering noises. It was no stage performance for police-vehicle limelight. The grief over the damage to the Lincoln was very real.

The next thing I knew, the barrel of a pistol was pointed at my head from over the rearview mirror. I could follow the foresight back to a steady eye, glinting in the darkness. What looked like lieutenant bars were stitched onto his collar, gray against black. He’d crept up as silently as my David, though my blasts on the horn had helped.

More men came around the front, and powerful flashlight beams lanced into my eyes. I gave a very real whimper and a pained yip.

“Yo!” the lieutenant said. “They got him chained in the driver’s seat. That’s why he didn’t run. Get a bomb-dog up here, now!”

“Keep those hands up,” a voice ordered. I’d been trying to shield my eyes from the flashlights with my forearm.

“Yeah, Corp, it’d be just like those bastards to blow up some poor dumb Grog to try to get us,” another, younger voice said.

Not just one dog came forward, but three. After the first, a good-natured yellow pot roast of a birder sniffed around beneath the car and behind my seat, pausing with interest over my wounds; other yelping hounds smelled the upholstery and started running in and out of the surrounding woods, trying to locate a trail.

They removed my chains with bolt cutters and kept their guns

on me.

The lieutenant had an aged, battered face, but kindly eyes. He looked like the sort of man you’d send into the brush after an escapee from a sensitive institution. I wondered what sin lay in his past, that the Kurian Order did not let him rise above his original commissioned rank.

“That’s those guerillas for you,” an Ohio backing up his lieutenant said. “Take some poor dumb hurt animal and chain him behind a wheel. Fuckers. I bet they told him home and bed were just down the road. Poor dumb Grog.”

Since they seemed in no hurry to effect my ticket for the hells I’ve missed in this life, I fell out of the door and decided to vocalize. Maybe it would draw the hounds’ attention. Every minute counted. Eventually

they’d backtrack, but if I could delay things here . . .

I lay on my face, hiking my butt up as though expecting a deserved kick, arms extended toward the lieutenant with the pistol.

“Me drive. Me drive good,” I gabbled. “No go wrong way. No carelessnessish!

Not see tree beside road. Only see tree on road.”

“Wow, this one’s a regular J. Edger Proofcock,” a soldier to my right said, with the youthful voice I’d heard earlier. I looked at the front of the car and let out a wailing cry of horror.

“You fix? Please you fix? Scrap, no, not scrap! Oh, oh, oh! Drive

good no!” I finished, summoning the rest of this season’s allotment of tears. I crawled for the wreck, patted the hood of the Lincoln,

threw myself against a tire under the hostile guns, weeping like bereft Niobe herself. Human culture is so rich in emotional exhibitions.

Not the Golden One way—we only howl to frighten enemies—but over a lifetime among men I’ve now learned to appreciate the benefit of a good teary purge.

“He’s worried we’ll shitcan him for wrecking that Xanadu ride,” the man with the bolt cutters said. “He doesn’t know guerillas from churchmen.”

“Whaddya say, Lieutenant? End the laments?” the man with the shotgun said, bringing it to his shoulder again.

Coming your way, beloved. Tell the children.

“Top, hold up,” the youthful-sounding one who’d expressed sympathy for the poor dumb animal said. “Let me take him. I can find a buyer in Lex. Ought to be worth a couple thou. Big healthy Grog like that.”

“Healthy? You see he’s bleeding, Frisky?” bolt cutters said.

“C’mon. Grog’s clean their teeth with grenades,” my new guardian said. “If he’s still yappin’, he’ll live, probably longer than any of us. Thirty percent for you, Lieutenant, twenty for the Top. I’ll take him to Lexington with a pass and see what I can get for him.”

“Forty percent for me,” the lieutenant said.

“And thirty for me,” the shotgun-wielding Top added.

“You’ll take ten,” the lieutenant said. “Eager to please, muscles like that. And can drive, too. Ought to be worth four or five thou if he speaks and savvies and is intact below the belt. Schmuck.” He took a breath, looking at the anxious dogs, still running back and forth sniffing for scent fifteen miles behind. “This night’s going to suck hard, and six gets you a Kewpie doll that the damn legworm ranchers will be peeing in the wells before we use them. Might as well take a bonus.”

“That’s being on the righteous side, sir,” Frisky said.

“I’ll want a receipt, Frisky. I don’t want any of my forty rolled up some whore’s ass so her pimp don’t find it. Buy him a decent labor-belt to hide those bandages.”

“Sir yes sir,” Frisky said.

Frisky went to work securing the detail’s investment in me. They didn’t have handcuffs big enough for my wrists, so they settled for leg irons.

If I’d known what was to be endured over the next few months,

I might have been tempted to rush the top sergeant. A shotgun blast, a brief caress of hot air and lead before the end of this trying world; that would be nothing compared to the evil awaiting me in the Coal Country.

Disappointing Editing and Pace
By Susan Hicks
Too many books, magazines and newspapers seem to be attempting their efforts with as few editors as possible. It's a shame that the latest Vampire Earth novel has fallen to this latest fad. This book features a sympathetic character in a world made recognizable by the author's other books, and it could have been a better book than it is - with judicious (or any) editing.

The book normally flows reasonably well early on, given the sedate pace of its first person narrative, but too often continuity problems emerge later. There are scenes that begin but do not end, and others that end without having begun. If you set the scene for an ambush, you should probably describe the ambush, for instance. If you find a compelling weapon and begin to consider its use, you should probably not jump into the middle of a conversation with a Kurian you do not meet until the final pages. The discontinuity in this scene is quite bleak. Finally, an author owes his readers descriptions of important events, not merely some version of The Perils of Pauline, in which "Pauline, having fainted while tied to the train tracks awakens alone and unharmed, and never thinks about it again."

Maybe it's time to crowd source editing, or at least ask for volunteers. I'd volunteer to help a favored author like Knight.

Regretfully, this will be the first book I return to Amazon for being "faulty," and I will await the second edition in which such editing issues may be addressed. It won't be this edition that sits on my bookshelf next to all of the other Vampire Earth books.

If you love the series stay away from this book.
By Thilix
So where to start? This was actually the first of the series I've per-ordered since I discovered it a year or two ago and I have to say it was a HUGE let down. I picked it up and started reading. Immediately it was not what I was expecting, It's basically a retelling of the events from our favorite Golden One's view, written by him. Ok. I'm on board for that, it's a new outing into a different type of story telling for the series, maybe it'll be good right? Nope. Not really. IT had the potential, it was right there but sadly it fell flat.

****This is basically a giant spoiler****

The first 4th of the book is fairly slow(including almost an entire chapter with a note saying "hey if you don't want back story on the golden ones go ahead and skip this chapter"), but that can sometimes be part of leading up to a story. It starts where we last saw Ahn-Kha, leading away the pursuers so that everyone could escape. He's captured and decided to play dumb in the hopes that they would think he was a simple grog that was taken hostage and forced to drive. The quislings chasing him see him and apparently fall for it, so they take him off to be sold for money. After that he's taken off and sold to the Maynes family as a possible bodyguard/strong arm/general grog labor. They run him through some tests and he eventually is assigned to the black sheep of the Maynes family as a bodyguard. We then get several chapters about how this man is horrible and still a semi decent quisling at times. Things go well and Ahn-Kha seems to be formulating a plan to escape and is just biding his time until he can get everything right. During this time we really don't learn anything new about Ahn-Kha other than he's really really good at playing the stupid grog that can be ordered around.

We finally start to see some progression in the story when they start talking about the how the rebellion actually came to start. . .And would you believe it, it wasn't even about the fact the reapers are killing people for food, it wasn't about someone being raped and killed. . . it was bout kitchen ware. Yes. You read that right. It wasn't Ahn-Kha, it wasn't the fact they were being kept as human cattle, it was over kitchen ware. Remind me not to be around these people on Black Friday. Blood shed ensues and eventually the reapers demand that the Maynes's be culled for their lack of stopping the rabel and their destruction caused during the riot. During the first cull Maynes's sister is taken and never heard of again. This sets him off and he stops caring. The sabotage keeps happening and starts to escalate and eventually a 2nd bloodier cull happens. During which Maynes finally flies off the deep end and rams the truck into a barricade putting him into a vegetative state.

This takes us up to where Ahn-Kha is put to work in the mines. He's still playing the dumb grog and eventually seems to be accepted by all the mining crew and even becomes one of the "elite" miners who gets food for free and is even a popular xeno. Now this is when the story really starts to jump around like others have said. One moment you'll be reading about characters thinking about a revolt and then suddenly a person is back from talking to the foreman about the revolt that's already taken place. Up until this point it was a decent book, albeit a very slow paced book, but things just start jumping. I lost count the number of times that I had to go back and re-read things so that I could try and understand how we got from point A to point D while skipping B and C. The revolt happens(and you miss quite a bit due to poor editing, I can't see this being a E.E. Knights writing mistake as everything I've read from him always flows)

After the revolt at the mine things really start to speed up. The revolution seems to kick off and other Kurian's start to get involved. It does gloss over some of the parts as they're covered in other books(see the notes in the book to see which books) and eventually leads up to where the Kurian's just have had enough and re-release the Ravies onto the area effectively wiping it out. Ahn-Kha ends up surviving his final run in with a reaper and the Kurian who used to be the great great grandfather Maynes who was blessed with the secrets of stealing life force by the Kurians. He kills the reaper but ends up getting hurt pretty bad and apparently the injury stays with him until after the fight for Earth is finished.

So all in all. . . I'd avoid this book until the 2nd revision comes out. This one has far too many Editing errors and should never have been released. I don't blame Amazon for this, it's not their fault, but the fault of the publishers and editors who seemed to have reviewed half the book, then skipped the 2nd half in a rush to get it out on time.

Take a pass
By Robert E. Malone
I wish i had read the reviews. it is an astonishingly bad effort by Knight. I can only assume he has suffered a traumatic brain injury or this was ghost written. The whole book is like a bad diary with no character development, little humor and no Valentine. i paid ten bucks for something sny self respecting publisher should have rejected as poorly written and unfinished.
