Great Resource for Coaches
By Mike
An excellent book for youth, high school and college coaches who want to teach their athletes how to accelerate quickly. Just being a fraction of a second quicker gives an athlete a big advantage, this book will help them get to a new level. Athletes can use this book on their own; though it would be helpful to have someone make sure they are doing the drills correctly. Developing Speed will help readers understand the principles behind creating sport specific programs. Tables are included to assess speed for high school through college age athletes.
Sport specific chapters include; baseball, basketball, football, ice hockey, rugby, soccer, tennis and track. Drills are suggested with photographs and diagrams providing helpful hints on correct technique.
An authoritative source by the National Strength and Conditioning Association.

Exceeded expectations
By Mark
I was a little skeptical about this book because none of the contributors is an established sprint coach. I know that track sprinting is different than sprinting in field and court sports but I thought that an established track coach's input would still have been included.
I was pleasantly surprised by the book. I learned a considerable amount especially about speed program design, although I was hoping for a little more regarding developing good sprint technique. This minor disappointment aside, I feel confident that the information in the book would be beneficial to all but the most experienced S&C coach or sports performance trainer. It was a fast read and I found myself disappointed when it was over. I will certainly apply some of the info to the teams and athletes I train and suspect that this book will spend more time in my hand than on my book shelf.

Two word summary: great book!
By Thomas
I feel lucky to get this book in in exchange for my review, however, I had to wait a few weeks before writing my review because we were in between soccer seasons. I have been coaching soccer for fifteen plus years, and this is a great resource to have for general speed as well as soccer specific speed drills. Human Kinetics does a very good job in general, this was outstanding with the background information and pictures. It can get a bit dry, but that background can be very helpful in getting buy in and true participation. Overall it is a great addition to have in the collection, and to try and counter the age old story that you can't teach speed.
